加·泽文 (Gabrielle Zevin ，1977— )
美国作家、电影剧本编剧，《岛上书店》作者。年轻并极富魅力，深爱阅读与创作，为《纽约时报书评》撰稿，现居洛杉矶。

初识玛格丽特时，我住在一间地下公寓房里。租金公道，地段在我所能支付的房子当中也是最好的。从地下往上瞧，视野不算理想，但很有趣：大多是人们的鞋子，有时还能瞅着小腿的一部分，还有那些只有一两岁孩子三分之一高的小狗。我学会了如何根据鞋履来识别自己的访客。那时，定期来访的只有我的姐姐贝丝，她会穿着那双劣质不堪的仿麂皮绒凉鞋；还有就是玛格丽特，她穿的鞋子总是随着心情的变化而不同。
我过着一种奇异的地下室生活。黑夜与白昼的区别变得不再那么重要。那些在地上体面之处绝迹的各类虫子是我的常伴之客。雪融化后，房间里便是一片汪洋。每逢收垃圾的日子，我都得紧闭窗户。屋里的暖气不再运作，室温终年维持在46华氏度。住在楼上的房客们与我接触时也都难掩狐疑之色。因为住在地下室，我很自然地变成了“住在地下室的那个人”。

她扬起头，笑容慢慢漾开。“是的，”她说，“我会的。”

玛吉在另一张床垫上打着呼噜，而我回想起了对她表白那天的她。
“我爱你。”我说。就在说出口的一刹那，一辆车子鸣响了喇叭，好似考验我一般。我不确定她是否听到了，只好再说一遍：“我爱你。”
她看上去说不出是困惑还是欢喜（玛吉脸上的表情总有点模棱两可，这两种情绪可能看起来一模一样），不过她一言未发。片刻之后，她沿着街道跑掉了。
大约六个小时后，电话响了。“我爱你。”她说完就挂了。
中间那段空缺，究竟意味着她爱得更多还是更少？要是没有空缺的话，我会觉得她是本能地说出这话的，这可能是好事也可能是坏事。毕竟，要是你朝谁开了一枪，他肯定也会回射你一枪。但有了那段空缺，我知道玛吉说出这话并非出于本能。我知道她在那六小时里，一定大部分时间都在思忖我的表白，考虑该如何回应。的确是经过了长时间的深思熟虑，是的，但终归还是可以相信，她说的是真心话。
在说爱她的那一刻，我其实并未太深刻地感受到我所表达的那种爱意。我只是无比渴望听到她的回答。又或者，我只是想把话说出口。有时候，我们会言过其实。有时候，我们会说一些不是那么真实的话，暗自希望说出来后即会成真。这一次，效果达到了；因为那段空缺，我爱上了她。
