抗日战争爆发后，宗璞和全家随父亲冯友兰先生自北京南渡昆明，在西南联大度过了八年时光。亡国之痛、流离之苦、父辈师长的操守气节，给少年宗璞留下了不可磨灭的记忆，她从这段生活中得到了宝贵的人生财富和深刻的心灵感受，也得到了丰富的创作素材和灵感。
经过长期的酝酿、构思，宗璞于1985年开始写作《南渡记》，历时两年而成。这部小说厚积薄发，出手不凡，中国古典小说的叙述方式和西方文学的叙述方式自然融合，创造出浓郁的艺术氛围。小说从一个独特的角度反映“七七事变”抗战爆发对北平知识阶层的巨大震动，刻画出他们在亡国之际表现出的气节和品格，宁可以逃亡或一死表示对侵略者的抵抗，对其中一些人懦弱苟且的灵魂也给予无情的揭露恰切的表现。小说对人物的刻画十分生动，孟弗之的沉稳、吕碧初的贤惠、吕老人的刚直以及峨的古怪、嵋的善解人意、（王玄）子的率性等等，都给人留下深刻印象。对凌京尧变节行为的描写，细腻得体，尽在情理之中，极有说服力。寄人篱下的吕香阁，在《南渡记》中虽然不是主要人物，但其乖巧伶俐掩盖下的心机欲望，已见端倪。吕贵堂和赵莲秀两个小人物，心思举止，无不合乎其身份地位。由于作者深厚的语言功力和对人物的深刻洞察，刻画人物的技巧十分圆熟，仿佛在不经意间，一两句话便点透了人物的性格，而且为其以后的发展埋下伏笔，使小说充满了引人入胜的魅力。小说对人物众多的家族生活、对孩子们和下层人物的描写，脉络清晰，有条不紊，颇有《红楼梦》之风。
《东藏记》1993年开笔，写作历时七年。它继续《南渡记》的故事，描写明仑大学南迁昆明之后师生们艰苦的物质生活和乐观昂扬的精神面貌。小说的背景从北平吕家宅院扩展到大后方的昆明城郊，故事情节更加丰富，对人物的刻画更加深入，小说也更加有趣好看。教授间亦雅亦俗的人情世态，青年人朦胧纯真的思想、情感，均被作者施以委婉细致的笔墨。对知识分子的思想倾向、独立人格以及在追求理想的过程中的果决与无奈，都有深刻而令人信服的描写。面对日益逼近的战争、腐朽的时政和艰苦的生活，孟弗之不畏当局的压力、流言的干扰、安逸的诱惑，以爱国学者的良知，发正义之言，尽育人之责。他稳重宽和，谨严自守，是一个既有传统道德修养，又有民主意识的理想的知识分子形象。庄卣辰、萧子蔚、江、李涟等人物，或超脱、或优雅、或豪放、或拘谨，都具有一种知识分子求真求实的精神气质。作者对钱明经和尤甲仁夫妇的刻画可谓神来之笔，一勾一划，便将他们共同的聪明傲气和骨子里不同的本性挖掘出来，自私尚能容忍，虚伪不可宽恕。另一个角色白礼文，也是个令人叫绝的人物，虽是另类，不可或缺。青年知识分子卫葑，在《南渡记》中颇有神秘色彩。他一直处于理想和现实的矛盾之中，北平、延安和昆明的生活仿佛都不属于他，“他信他所不爱的，而爱他所不信的”，为了做到爱自己所信的，他也许得用一生的功夫改造自己的主观世界。作者给予这个人物的笔墨虽不很多，却贯注了深刻的理解和同情。他离开昆明之前向（王玄）子托孤，是极有深意的一笔。（王玄）子是小说中一个引人注目的人物，从北平到昆明，从他人与我无干到我与他人处处纠缠不清，她的心性逐渐成熟，高傲的公主成了勇于承当的女侠。在她未来的生活道路上，会有太多的未知因素。
作者描写少男少女间纯真的情感，简洁细腻，委婉自然，充满诗情画意。对抗日军人严亮祖及其超乎常情的家庭关系的描写，也使小说的色彩更加丰富。
《南渡记》和《东藏记》是充满艺术魅力的长篇小说，它的人物鲜明生动，语言优雅精致，含义深刻隽永，复读复品，回味无穷。小说的叙述从容洗练，弛而不张，平淡之中伏有大气磅礴的布局。关于小说的语言，囿于篇幅，无法详述，读者在阅读中自可体会其妙趣。

宗璞，哲学家冯友兰之女，毕业于清华大学外文系，退休于中国社会科学院外国文学研究所。既承中国传统文化的深厚渊源，又得外国文化长期耳濡目染，她的作品蕴含着东方传统哲学文化和西方人文主义思想相结合的精神内涵，具有独特的艺术气质和高雅格调。主要作品有散文《西湖漫笔》、《奔落的雪原》、《花朝节的纪念》、《三松堂断忆》、《哭小弟》、小说《红豆》、《鲁鲁》、《三生石》、《四季流光》、童话《寻月记》、《花的话》、《总鳍鱼的故事》、《小沙弥陶陶》、长篇小说《南渡记》《东藏记》、《西征记》、《北归记》（总名《野葫芦引》，其中《东藏记》获第六届茅盾文学奖，《北归记》待出）等，出版了多种小说童话散文选集。
