川端康成（1899-1972），日本作家。生于大阪。1968年以 “敏锐的感受，高超的叙事技巧，表现日本人的精神实质”获诺贝尔文学奖。代表作有《伊豆的舞女》《雪国》《古都》《千只鹤》《山音》《睡美人》等。

Book Abstract

只剩下江口老人独自一人的时候，他环视了一圈这间悄然无声的八叠房间，随后将视线落在通往邻室的门上。那是一扇用三尺长的杉木板做成的门。看样子这门是后来才安装上去，而不是当初盖房子的时候就有的。察觉到这点，他又发现这扇墙原先可能就是隔扇拉门，但为了做“睡美人”的密室，后来才改装成墙壁的吧。这扇墙壁的颜色，虽说与四周的墙很协调，但还是显得新些。
江口拿起女人留下的钥匙看了看。这是一把极简单的钥匙。拿钥匙自然是准备去邻室的，可是江口没有站起身来。
刚才女人说过，浪涛汹涌。听起来像是海浪撞击着悬崖的声音。这幢小房子坐落在悬崖边上。风传来了冬天将至的信息。风声使江口老人感觉到冬之将至，也许是由于这家的缘故，也说不定是江口老人的心理作用。
这里属温暖地带，只要有个火盆就不觉寒冷。四周没有风扫落叶的动静。江口深夜才到这里来，不太清楚这附近的地形，却闻到海的气味。一走进大门，就看到庭院远比房子宽阔得多，种植了许多参天的松树和枫树。黑松的树叶在昏暗的空中摇曳，显得强劲有力。
这家先前可能是幢别墅。
江口用还攥着钥匙的手，点燃了一支香烟，只抽了一两口，就将它掐灭在烟灰缸里，接着又点燃第二支，慢条斯理地抽。这时他的心境，与其说是在自嘲心中的忐忑不安，莫如说是涌上一种讨厌的空虚感更加贴切。往常江口临睡前总要喝点洋酒，不过睡眠很浅，又常做噩梦。江口读过一个年纪轻轻就因癌症死去的歌女的和歌，其中写到在难眠的夜里吟了这样一首歌：“黑夜给我准备的，是螗蜍、黑犬和溺死者。”江口还牢记不忘。现在他又想起这首和歌来。在邻室睡着的姑娘，不，应该说是让人弄睡的姑娘，是不是就像那“溺死者”呢？想到这儿，江口对去邻室就踌躇不前了。虽然没有听说用什么办法让姑娘熟睡，但总而言之，她似乎是陷入不自然的、人事不省的昏睡状态。比如说她也许吸了毒，是一副肌肤呈混浊的铅色、眼圈发黑、肋骨凸现、瘦骨嶙峋的模样，或是一副胖乎乎的全身冰凉的浮肿模样，也许还是一副露出令人生厌的污秽的紫色牙龈、呼出轻轻的鼾声的样子呢。江口老人在六十七年生涯中，当然经历过与女人相处的丑陋之夜。而且这种丑陋反而难以忘怀。那不是容貌丑陋的问题，而是女人不幸人生的扭曲所带来的丑陋。江口觉得自己都这把年纪丁，并不想再增添一次与女人的那种丑陋的邂逅。他到这家来，真到要行动的时候，就是这样想的。然而，还有什么比一个老人躺在让人弄得昏睡不醒的姑娘身边，睡上一夜更丑陋的事昵？江口到这家里来，难道不正是为了寻觅老丑的极致吗？客栈女人说过“可以放心的客人”。确实，到这家来的，似乎都是些“可以放心的客人”。告诉江口这家情况的，也属于这样的老人。
此人已经完全成为一个非男性的老人了。这个老人似乎认定江口也同样进入了耄耋之年的行列。这家女人大概净同这样一些老人打交道，因此她对江口既没有投以怜悯的目光，也没有露出试探的神色。不过，精于寻花问柳路数的江口，虽然还不属于女人所说的“可以放心的客人”，但是只要他想那样做，自己是可以做得到的。
那就要看届时自己的心情如何、地点怎样，还要根据对象来决定。在这一点上，他觉得自己已是进入老丑之境，距这家的老龄客人那种凄怆境地已为期不远。到这儿来看看，正是这种征兆的显露。因此，江口绝不想揭示在这里的老人们的丑态，或打破那可怜的禁忌。如果想不打破，也是可以不打破的。这里似乎也可以叫作秘密俱乐部，不过很少有老人会员。
江口来这里不是为了揭露俱乐部的罪恶，也不是为了搅乱俱乐部的规矩。自己的好奇心不那么强烈，正显示自己已经老得可怜。
“有的客人说，入睡后做了美梦。还有的客人说，想起了年轻时代的往事呢。”江口老人想起刚才那女人说的话，脸上没有一丝苦笑，他一只手扶着桌子站起身来，把通往邻室的杉木门打开了。P5-7
