马克·吐温（Mark Twain，1835 － 1910），

原名塞缪尔· 朗赫恩· 克莱门斯 (Samuel

Langhorne Clemens)。美国著名作家，被誉为“美国文学史上的林肯”。少年失学，到工厂当小工，后来做过密西西比河的领航员、矿工及新闻记者。坎坷的生活经历使他目睹了社会各种弊病，接触了形形色色的人物，获得了丰富的写作素材。作品风格融幽默与讽刺于一体，代表作有《百万英镑》《汤姆·索亚历险记》《哈克贝利·费恩历险记》等。

张友松（1903 － 1995），

《百万英镑》：

哈，你明白从此以后会发生一些什么事情吗？我自然是顺水推舟，不由自主地到各处去买我所需要的一切东西，老是叫人家找钱。不出一个星期，我把一切需要的讲究东西和各种奢侈品都置备齐全，并且搬到汉诺威广场一家不收普通客人的豪华旅馆里去住了。我在那里吃饭，可是早餐我还是照顾哈里士小饭铺，那就是我当初靠那张一百万镑钞票吃了第一顿饭的地方。我一下给哈里士招来了财运。消息已经传遍了，大家都知道有一个背心口袋里带着一百万镑钞票的外国怪人光顾过这个地方。这就够了。原来不过是个可怜的、撑一天算一天的、勉强混口饭吃的小买卖，这一下子可出了名，顾客多得应接不暇。哈里士非常感激我，老是拼命把钱借给我花，谁也推不脱。因此我虽然是个穷光蛋，可是老有钱花，就像阔佬和大人物那么过日子。我猜想迟早总会有一天西洋镜要被拆穿，可是我既已下水，就不得不泅过水去，否则就会淹死。你看，当时我的处境本来不过是一出纯粹的滑稽剧，可是就因为有了那种紧急的大祸临头的威胁，却使事情具有严重的一面和悲剧的一面。一到晚上，天黑之后，悲剧的部分就占上风，老是警告我，威胁我；所以我就只有呻吟，在床上翻来覆去，很难睡着觉。可是一到欢乐的白天，悲剧的成分就渐渐消失得无影无踪了，于是我就扬扬得意，简直可以说是快活到昏头昏脑、如痴如狂的地步。

马克·吐温的作品富有鲜明的美国特色，内容生动，引人入胜。他不仅继承了美国幽默文学的传统，用错位的手法来揭示世事的荒唐，而且还把现实主义的精心刻画和浪漫主义的抒情描写交织在一起，形成了一种主题严肃、笔法幽默的独特艺术风格，开辟了口语体的新境界。他的这种口语化的叙述语言使文字清新生动，也使故事富有浓郁的生活气息，读来仿佛置身其中，如闻其声，如见其人，增强了故事的感染力。他的这种创作风格，使美国文学彻底摆脱英国文学的“斯文传统”，真正走向独立和成熟，因而他在美国文学史上占有举足轻重的地位。

马克·吐温之所以成为美国和世界文坛上的一位著名作家，当然离不开他的长篇小说《汤姆·索亚历险记》和《哈克贝利·芬历险记》，但更能代表他独特风格，体现他对世态人情的把握的是他的中短篇小说。在这些小说中，作者发挥了极度夸张的艺术想象，采用幽默、戏谑乃至离奇的手法，塑造了众多老实、天真的小人物，对社会生活中的种种弊端和恶行做了辛辣的嘲讽和抨击。马克·吐温堪称“黑色幽默”的先驱。

收入本集子的作品，如《卡拉维拉斯县驰名的跳蛙》、《竞选州长》、《百万英镑》、《我最近辞职的事实经过》、《三万元的遗产》、《败坏了赫德莱堡的人》等，都是马克·吐温中短篇小说中的代表作。值得一提的是《加利福尼亚人》一文。它是最早介绍到我国的马克·吐温小说，1906年发表在《绣像小说》第七十期上，题为《山家奇遇》，系从日文转译。当时马克·吐温还在世。译者吴梼选译这篇小说，若非偶然，定是慧眼独具。
