《反基督：彼得和阿列克塞》的情节移到俄国，发生在18世纪初期彼得大帝改革的时代。小说有两条平行发展的情节线索：一条是彼得大帝与其长子阿列克塞之间的矛盾斗争；另一条是彼得的政权及其所建立的“新教会”与人民群众当中广泛流行的各种旧教派（特别是分裂教派）之间的激烈斗争。彼得与阿列克塞的矛盾斗争不是普通的父子冲突，而是体现着尖锐社会矛盾的皇室政治斗争。小说截取了1715年6月至1718年6月这段时间，这是阿列克塞一生中最后的三年，是他与父亲的矛盾达到白热化的三年。小说不仅深刻表现了彼得与阿列克塞之间的斗争，而且通过回忆等手法，全面展示了沙皇父子之间的关系，同时也涉及了彼得大帝的政治、军事、文化等各方面的活动，刻画了异常复杂的彼得形象。

德·梅列日科夫斯基（1865—1941）是20世纪最杰出的大师级作家之一，在西方享有盛誉。长篇三部曲《基督与反基督》是他文学创作的顶峰。这套蕴含了深刻宗教哲学思想的巨著，可与20世纪欧美任何一部文学经典相媲美，而其对基督教本质的深入挖掘，对人类历史命运的宗教观察，则是其他经典难望其项背的。他独创了一种新的小说体裁——“思想小说”。

“反基督要降临了。他是最后一个魔鬼，还没有到过人世，可是他的徒子徒孙却生了不少——遍布天下。子孙给老子铺路，他们全都干着反基督的勾当。等到一切安排就绪，处处都畅通无阻。反基督便会亲自出马。眼下已经到了大门口——不久就会到达！”
这是一个五十来岁的老者对一个年轻人说的。这位老者穿着破旧的书吏长袍，而年轻人则穿着中国棉布长衫，赤脚穿着布鞋，坐在桌子后面。
“您是从哪儿知道这一切的？”年轻人说，“圣经上写得明明白白：没有人知道，连天上的使者都不知道，神子也不知道。可是您却知道……”
他沉默片刻，打个哈欠。又问道：
“你莫非是分裂派教徒不成？”
“我是东正教教徒。”
“到彼得堡来干什么？”
“从莫斯科家里来。带来了收支账，监察官告密说我受贿。”
“你受贿过吗？”
“受过。不是出于强迫或者诈骗，而是由于爱和良心。有人为了奖励我们在衙门里的工作而自愿行贿，多少不拘。”
他说得很随便。看来他实际上真的不认为受贿是罪恶。
“监察官揭发我的罪过，可是并没有拿出任何证据，只是根据包工头们的笔记。包工头们每次行贿数目不多，但已有多年，推算到我的头上为二百一十五卢布，我无力偿还。贫穷，年纪老了，多灾多难，一无所有，成了废物，毫无用处，衙门里的事不能做了——呈请退休。大慈大悲的殿下，发发慈悲吧，可怜可怜我吧，救救我这个孤苦伶仃的老头子吧，让他们免除这笔不合理的债务吧。请您开开恩吧，阿列克塞·彼得罗维奇太子！”
阿列克塞皇太子是几个月以前在彼得堡遇见这个老人的，那是在接神者谢苗和女先知安娜教堂里。在封丹河畔铸铁街的谢列麦捷夫市场附近。皇太子见他很久没有刮脸，胡子花白，觉得这对于在衙门里做事的官员来说非同一般，又注意到他在唱诗班里规规矩矩地念诵圣诗，便问他是什么人，从哪儿来，担任什么官职。老人说他是莫斯科炮兵衙门的书吏，名叫拉里翁·多库金，从莫斯科来，落脚在这座谢苗教堂烤圣饼的女人家中：他提到自己的贫困和被告密的事，而且几乎是一开口就讲到反基督。皇太子觉得这个老头很可怜。他让他到家里来见他，可以给他出出主意，帮衬他些钱。
现在多库金站在他面前，穿着那件破烂不堪的长袍，像个叫花子。这是最常见的书吏中的一个，这种人往往被称作“墨水瓶”、“衙门誊写员”。他脸上的皱纹坚硬，仿佛是石头刻的，一双暗淡无光的小眼睛露出呆滞而冷漠的神情，灰色的脸庞像他整天抄写的公文那样枯燥乏味：他在衙门里辛辛苦苦地埋头于公文堆里可能已有三十年，出自于爱和良心而接受包工头的贿赂，而且也许还搬弄是非，现在竟然异想天开，说什么反基督要下界了。
“莫非是个骗子？”皇太子产生了怀疑，更加仔细地察看他。可是一点儿骗子的迹象也没有。甚至看不到一点狡猾的样子，而这张脸上更多的倒是老实憨厚和孤立无助、阴郁和倔强，就像有些人被某种固执的思想所占据一样。
“我从莫斯科来还要办另外一件事。”老人补充道，好像是笑了。那种固执的思想慢慢地显露到他那副呆滞的面部表情上来。他垂下眼睛，把手伸进怀里摸索起来，从衣袋里子的破洞里面掏出一叠纸来，交给了皇太子。
这是两本很薄的沾满油污的小笔记本，只有通常笔记本四分之一大小，里面用书吏的笔体写满工整的大字。
阿列克塞漫不经心地读起来，可是后来却越来越聚精会神。
一开头是抄录圣父、先知和启示录关于反基督、关于世界末日的言论。然后——向“伟大俄国和整个宇宙的大法师们”呼吁，祈求宽恕他多库金的“狂妄和愚蠢，他没有得到国家的恩准，竟敢出于悲痛和怜悯以及对教会的笃信而写成本文”，还祈求在皇上面前为他求情，恳请皇上赦免他并且听听他的陈述。
接下去看来就是多库金的主要思想：
“上帝吩咐人要独立自主。”
最后——是对皇上彼得·阿列克塞耶维奇的指责：
“如今我们皆与上帝的恩赐——独立自主和自由自在的生活所隔绝，也丢掉了房舍和商贸、农耕和手艺以及自己从前的一切行业和古代定下的法律，更有甚者，竟然丢掉了基督教的一切虔诚。从此地被赶到他处，从这座城市被赶到另一座城市。悲苦难言，心中愤愤不平。改变了自己的生活习惯和语言以及服饰，剃掉了头发和胡须，把自己的人骂得狗血喷头，使他们名声扫地。我们已经没有善，没有自己的面貌。与别的信仰的人没有区别；完全跟他们同流合污了，习惯了他们的事情，而背弃了自己的基督教约言，荒废了神圣的教堂。对于东方则闭上眼睛，撒腿向西方跑去，走上一条奇怪的未知的道路，毁灭在朦胧之乡。安置外国人，给他们提供一切福祉，使其富贵起来。而让土生土长的自己人忍饥挨饿，受尽折磨，拷打追债，用无法承担的赋税使他们倾家荡产。再说别的就不合适了，比较得体的是把嘴封上。可是看到新耶路撒冷的荒芜和苦难中的人们受着无法忍受的灾祸熬煎，心无比地疼痛！”
“这一切，”结尾说，“都是以我们耶稣基督的名义给我们造成的。噢。隐秘的受难者们，不要害怕，不要绝望，你们要更加善良，以十字架为武器武装起来，去对付反基督的力量！为了上帝而忍耐，尚须稍加忍耐！基督绝不会忘记我们，现在以及永久。任何时候，光荣都属于他。阿门。”
“你为什么写了这个？”皇太子读完笔记本，问道。
“一封同样的信几天前扔在谢苗教堂前的台阶上，”多库金回答道，“可是那封信被人拾去给烧了，没有呈递给皇上，也没有搜查。而这篇请愿书我想要张贴到皇宫附近的三位一体教堂，凡是读到其中写的东西的人都能了解这一点，并且能就此呈报给皇帝陛下。我写这个是为了改邪归正，为了让皇帝陛下有朝一日明白之后能翻然改悔。”
