本书是清朝的两部话本小说合集。其中，《豆棚闲话》是传统话本小说体例的一种创新，取消了传统话本小说中的入话部分，共包括十二则故事，分别由八位叙事者讲述。艾衲居士对话本小说传统叙事模式的突破，也意味着对传统阅读方式的改变，使阅读开始变成一段积极思考的过程，一段探寻意义的过程，通常这种情况只在那些一流的古典长篇小说的阅读过程中才会出现。《西湖佳话》则由清代古吴墨浪子所著，选择了与西湖有密切关系的十六个人物，或是历史上确有七人，或是介于亦真亦幻之间的传说中的人物，讲述了十六个相对独立的故事，将西湖之美景与各种各样人物的悲欢离合巧妙地杂糅到一起，湖中有人，人中有湖，人湖不分，湖人合一，写得西湖如痴如醉、如梦如幻，读来别有趣味。

《豆棚闲话.西湖佳话》是两部清代小说集《豆棚闲话》、《西湖佳话》的合集。《豆棚闲话》共十二则，各则独立成篇，且连环相扣。每则故事都由一些人在同一豆棚之下轮流叙说，故以书名。这种短篇连环的结构方式，类似外国古典名著《天方夜谭》、《十日谈》，在中国小说史上尚属首例。作品中不少篇目都不同程度地反映了明代末年的社会现实，直接抨击和讽刺了投靠清政府的明代士大夫文人，或揭露了明末吏治腐败世风日下、人情浇薄的现象。作品谈古论今，恢谐生动，意味隽永。问世后即产生广泛影响。
《西湖佳话》共十六卷，全名《西湖佳话古今遗迹》。讲述与西湖有关的故事。小说描绘人物众多，多为人们广为流传、喜闻乐见，如卷二《白堤政迹》、卷三《六桥才迹》详细地叙述了白居易、苏东坡治理西湖的功迹。卷七《岳坟忠迹》写岳飞被害后，葬在北山栖霞岭下，“故借他增西湖之雄”。其他各篇，写葛洪、济颠、冯小青、白娘子等。小说意在“西湖得人而题，人亦因西湖以传。”作品文笔朴素流畅，叙述生动，描写葛岭、白堤、孤山、灵隐等地景色，无不尽态极妍，颇具兴味。

江南地土洼下，虽属卑湿，一交四月便值黄霉节气，五月六月就是三伏炎天，酷日当空；无论行道之人汗流浃背，头额焦枯，即在家住的也吼得气喘，无处存着。上等除了富室大家，凉亭水阁，摇扇乘凉，安闲自在。次等便是山僧野叟，散发披襟，逍遥于长松荫树之下，方可过得。那些中等小家无计布摆，只得二月中旬觅得几株羊眼豆秧，种在屋前屋后闲空地边，或拿几株木头、几根竹竿搭个棚子，搓些草索，周围结彩的相似。不半月间，那豆藤在地上长将起来，弯弯曲曲依傍竹木随着棚子牵缠满了，却比造的凉亭反透气凉快。那些人家或老或少，或男或女，或拿根凳子，或掇张椅子，或铺条凉席，随高逐低坐在下面，摇着扇子，乘着风凉。乡老们有说朝报的，有说新闻的，有说故事的。除了这些，男人便说人家内眷，某老娘贤，某大娘妒，大分说贤的少，说妒的多；那女人便说人家丈夫，某官人好，某汉子不好，大分爱丈夫的少，妒丈夫的多。可见“妒”之一字，男男女女日日在口里提起、心里转动。如今我也不说别的，就把“妒”字说个畅快，倒也不负这个搭豆棚的意思。你们且安心听着。
当日有几个少年朋友同着几个老成的人也坐在豆棚之下，右手拿着一把扇子，左手拿着不知甚么闲书，看到闹热所在，有一首五言四句的诗，忽然把扇子在凳上一拍，叫将起来，便道：“说得太过！说得太过！”那老成人便立起身子道：“却是为何？”那少年便把书递与他，一手指道：“他如何说‘青竹蛇儿臼，黄蜂尾上针。两般犹未毒，最毒妇人心’？做诗的人想是受了妇人闲气，故意说得这样利害。难道妇人的心比这二种恶物还毒些不成？”
