菲茨杰拉德的一生及其创作，同追求时尚的美国东海岸地区有着千丝万缕的联系。他出生于家境不佳的小商人家庭，上学读书全仰仗亲友们的资助。进入普林斯顿大学以后，他积极参加学校的戏剧团体活动，并同当时著名的诗人毕肖普以及文学评论家威尔逊过从甚密。他这时已经如醉如痴地爱上了文学，他曾对文学评论家威尔逊说过：“我要成为有史以来最伟大的作家之一，你呢？”①他幻想着自己有朝一日真的成了一名声名赫赫的大作家，偕同美貌的金发女郎，出没于灯红酒绿的场所，过着终日纸醉金迷的生活。
第一次世界大战的炮火，打破了菲茨杰拉德的美妙幻想。人生价值的丧失，前途理想的渺茫，都给了他沉重的精神打击，致使他对中产阶级的精神价值发生了怀疑，终日迷惘、踯躅在“荒原”上。但他仍未失去当一名作家的信心和决心，他有足够的生活准备和技巧准备的，其中包括生活积累和技巧训练。
