《三岛由纪夫作品系列：沉潜的瀑布》是三岛由纪夫于1955年创作的长篇小说。小说主人公城所升是名水库设计师，他年轻英俊且事业有成，但却是个无感情的人。有一天遇到有夫之妇显子，她从不对男人动情。升兴奋地发现这是一个和自己相同的女人，他试图与显子构建起完全脱离情感的“人工的爱”。可是显子却真的对升动了情，城所升发现后大失所望，明白过来后的显子彻底绝望，投身瀑布自尽了。
小说以水库建设为背景，以一对男女的恋爱心理的变化为轴，探讨了艺术和爱情的关联。同时又通过对比冷静透彻的物质世界和感情丰富的人类世界，描写了重视社会效用的技术者的纯粹热情，探讨了自然、技术、效用三者的相互关系。

Author Description

三岛由纪夫（1925-1970），是日本著名作家，怪异鬼才，“日本传统文学的骄子”，两次被诺贝尔文学奖提名为该奖候选人。日本著名比较文学研究家千叶宣一认为三岛与普鲁斯特、乔伊斯、托马斯·曼齐名，是二十世纪四大代表作家之一。美国的日本文学研究权威唐纳德·金认为三岛是“世界上无与伦比的天才作家”。三岛在文学上探索着多种的艺术道路，集浪漫、唯美与古典主义于一身，特别是采取日本古典主义与希腊古典主义结合的创作方法，描写男性的生与死的美所取得的艺术成就，是各方公认的。在美学的追求上，三岛着力于对深层心理的挖掘，从隐微的颓唐中探求人性的真实。以生活为题材向艺术挑战，以肉体为本向精神挑战，这便是三岛作品的真正意义。三岛主要代表作品有《金阁寺》、《潮骚》、《假面的告白》、《春雪》、《奔马》、《禁色》、《镜子之家》等。

城所升是个不适合作小说主人公的人物，像他这么难以博得人们共鸣和同情的男人实属罕见。用人们的话说，他“太幸运”了。由于父母早逝，他受到了祖父的宠爱。祖父虽然已于三年前去世了，但其庇荫仍厚厚地罩护着他的爱孙。
祖父城所九造的名字在电力界无人不知。他豪爽，复仇心强，喜好游乐，精力过人，盛夏时也穿着西装革履，是个彻头彻尾的“民众之敌”。
在优裕的环境中成长起来的孙子，直到大学毕业时，才第一次听到了有关祖父的坏话。此前升的身边围绕的都是崇拜祖父的人。这个城所家的第三代早早失去了父母亲，因而没有机会听到家人对祖父霸道的统治的任何不满。其实，在他上小学的时候，一伙制造恐怖事件未遂者被检举时，在他们的暗杀名单上就发现了城所九造的名字，人们暗地里都拍手称快。
九造是鹿儿岛的产物。明治十二年，九造的父亲当上了旧藩主在东京宅第的执事，举家迁往京城。后来，九造就成了明治时代实业家共同的师傅福泽谕吉的弟子。
明治三十一年，福泽谕吉开始倡导实业，把注意力投向了水力电气的开发。九造对此颇有共鸣。十几年后，九造便投身于电力事业，把东北地方的公益事业掌握于手中。
九造的一生总是为预感所支配，无论是好是坏，事情的发展总是不出九造的预料，“所以我不是说过了吗”就成了他的口头禅。凡是做错的事，肯定是他的意志消沉所致。用九造的话来说，官吏愚钝，民众盲目。他相信企业的自由将有利于国家，物质文明的进步终将造福于民众。明治时代所有实业家的这一使命感也的确不可一概地否认。
升生活在晚年的祖父身边，亲眼目睹了被世间看作恶人的人的日常生活。祖父是个无私欲的人，纵使是纯粹的私欲，程度增强，轮廓加大的话，出于人的奇妙的本能，也不可能不含有无私的因素。而无私的热情若有稍稍的懈怠，就近似于私欲了。升从祖父的身上，看到了一个放弃自我的伟人。
虽然他对酷爱自己的祖父的人品并不完全喜欢，但是和这个怪物一日三餐地生活在一起，使他对世上各种各样的怪物的概念产生了深深的疑问。
祖母精神失常后一直住在医院里，直到去世。九造有两三个妾，却从不让她们到这个家里来。所以，自从母亲得产褥热死去后，除了男性化的奶妈外，升成长在一个没有女性气息的环境中。升长这么大，完全不知道母性的温柔为何物，因而也没有受到过男孩子要有远大抱负及复仇心等种种偏激的教育。
祖父给孙子的玩具都是些竣工仪式纪念品的发电机模型，或铁制组装玩具以及去水库勘查时带回来的河底的石头等等。
就是说，所有的玩具都是石头和铁的。他是个缺乏想象力的很有主见的孩子。小学老师为升的数学成绩之优秀而惊讶，同时也为他情操之欠缺而吃惊。让他画张画，他会把马和兔子都涂成同样的灰色。
父亲在升十岁的时候死去了。他是个身体虚弱、懒惰的人，对九造的教育方式虽有不满，也没加反对。他不太关心儿子。
九造阻止了他想上美术学校的愿望，让他进了银行。
这位每到周末都要去写生旅行的男人，看了儿子的画，受了不小的刺激。
升长成了一个棒小伙儿。和一般的少年不同，在女人给予他莫名其妙的感动之前，他就懂得了自己只要往那儿一站，就会使女人感动。对升来说，对某种感觉世界的发现，完伞不具备观念上的意义。
