岳晓平，1956年出生于北京，成长在东城安定门附近的胡同里。熟悉北京胡同里普通老百姓的生活，热爱那里的老街坊。作者曾是一个工程师，建造楼房的，现已退休。退休了就想着建造人们心灵的楼房。

第一章可爱的家园
郭礼周，世代生活在北京的普通人，北京古？圈里人称郭四哥，郭四爷（老北京平辈亦尊称爷），金石学专家。坐在西安城头上望着呼啦啦？风招展的旌旗，和可容数匹战马并行的马道，还有城门洞来往穿梭的人流车辆感到特亲切，即将落山的晚霞映在城墙上金灿灿的，美极了。他不知多少次坐在这儿但是坐不够，一坐在这儿他就会想起儿时的家和那些可亲可爱的老街坊，还有和小伙伴们趴在北京安定门城楼上幻想着远方的情景？？
1956年7月郭礼周出生在北京安定门“城根儿”的一个小杂院里，这里说的城根儿不是皇城根儿，按旧时的说法是北城的边缘了，？过城墙过了护城河就不是北京城了。低矮的碎砖小平房与正？四合院的房子没法比，除了把角有几块整砖剩下全是巴掌大和？头大小的碎砖、石子和泥垒成，还能垒得那么直，那么牢，现而今的泥瓦匠恐怕没人能干这种活儿了。这里住的都是些旗兵、破落户、小商小贩、苦力、撂地儿的艺人、摇煤球的、焊洋铁壶的、说媒？纤的等，总之是一些靠勤劳奔食的可爱的人，与皇城根儿的那些深宅大院也不可同日而语。
这个小院坐落在安定门城楼东面，院门冲北，出门不足三米就是城墙。这里准确地说不能叫胡同，因为北面是一溜城墙，要不怎么叫“城根儿”呢。院里就北、东、西各两间房，南面就是五道营院子的北房山墙。城根儿是什么时候形成的现在没人能说得清楚，但是五道营却是一条老胡同，自明永乐年间建北京城就有。当时叫“武德卫营”，就是明朝有一支既有武功又有德行的卫戍部队驻扎的地方。清初的时候成了“镶黄旗”的驻地，改叫“五道营”。这里的房子比城根儿的就好多了。现在提城根儿已？没什么人知道了，也早没有了，“五道营”却还在延续着六百年以后的故事。
小院的院门对着东屋的北墙，墙下是一个夏天做饭的灶台，屋里住着大妞子一家，北房住的就是他的恩师邢大爷，西屋住的就是郭礼周家，院子有三十多平方米是长方块，还有一棵树，是枣树。郭礼周记事的时候家里是土炕，一个炕柜搁衣服和细软，其实也没什么细软，就是换季的破衣服。被子全卧在炕柜上。一个条柜搁粮食，还有一个很重的大炕桌，天冷了在炕上吃，天热了在院里吃，这就是他们家的全部家当，对门大妞子他们家也差不多，整个城根儿这一溜也都差不了多少，不穷的人家没有在这儿住的。
郭礼周对爷爷没有太多印象，在他五岁那年爷爷去世了，过了不到半年奶奶也去世了，算是结伴而去吧。对门大妞子的爷爷、奶奶也是那一年结伴走的，都是无疾而终，而且很清瘦，挺凄婉的。郭礼周只记得他爷爷是一个个头很高非常谦和、体面的老头儿，对？都称“您”。上穿白布或黑布对襟布衫，下着一条黑布腼裆裤，扎着裤脚，脚上是黑布鞋。绝不趿？着鞋，也绝不在院里光膀子。不像大妞子她爷爷和她爸，到夏景天动不动就把上身扒光了，爷儿俩挺着鸡胸脯在当院晃悠来晃悠去还挺美。爷爷永远是清早空腹一壶高末（细碎的花茶），下午睡起来还是一壶高末。其他都是听他爸说的。
据郭礼周他爸说，他家祖上也是“从龙入关”的猛将，最高的做到正二品总兵，说是相当于军区司令。后到京为官封为左翼前锋副统领，世袭罔替，隶镶黄旗满洲。后来就一代不如一代，副将，参将，游击的一路下来，到郭礼周的爷爷这儿，十六岁袭了个从六品“骁骑校”。若按官职月俸饷银应该是十两银子，这样家里就宽裕多了，可是袭的都是爵位不是实缺，所以没有骁骑校的那份饷银，拿的还是男丁那二两半的钱粮，刨去杂质和缺两，也就是二两多一点，合成大洋就是三块大洋。所谓饷银是指军饷，就是军人的工资，旗人的男丁平日关一份饷银，战时都是军人，所以他们管拿钱叫“关饷”。到现在上岁数的人还把发工资叫“关饷”呢。清朝的武将一般品位定得高，职位偏低，骁骑校据说相当于连长或副连长，连长的心思还没从鸽子身上转到战马身上，转过年大清国就亡了，到了也没补上实缺。但是那一年也没白过，他娶了媳妇，媳妇比他大两岁，也“在旗”。大清国亡不亡的不要紧，要紧的是铁杆庄稼没了，骁骑校除了养鸽子、？眉、蝈蝈、蛐蛐这些雕虫小技别无所长。为了不挨饿只能继续变卖家产度日，这变卖家产的习惯也是祖传的，家产是身外之物，该抛就抛，肚子不饶人，财产就是为人服务的，绝不当守财奴。也就一路搬家到了安定门城根儿，搬到这儿就没法再搬了，再搬就出了北京城了，也是因为入关后祖宗们世代驻守在这一带。改成姓郭是按祖宗建州女真部落姓氏“郭尔佳氏”来的，算是对祖宗的念想和感恩。爷爷说过：“铁杆庄稼也不是什么好事，身无长技心里总是发虚，家有万贯不如一技在身。”
