一那是个充满瑞兆的时辰。东方还未发白，霞光却洒满林间。林边是他父母的简陋茅屋。屋顶上落了一对金冠鸟。按季节，尚不是它们应该出现的时候。天已久旱，草木枯干，草食动物饥渴难耐。竟在太阳当空的当儿，突降甘霖，大地得以滋润。一只雄壮的豹从窗外窥视着。它庄严而驯顺，毫无怕人的样子。窗内，婴儿就要呱呱坠地了。临产的母亲听到不知是谁弹奏的歌曲，围绕在她的耳际。
父亲是一位村长，名彭错，现在得到的是第三个儿子。他看见这些征兆．喜不自胜，更陶醉在对前途的希望之中。
他忖度着：这样落地的孩子一定不是平常的孩子，准是哪位得道喇嘛的转世；因为悲悯世人无知，才重新降生在人间，以便继续化度，使人脱离苦海。
然而为什么选择他们夫妇做父母呢？他一时想不出答案。可是，天长日久他便发现在自己身上有些品德是原来被忽略了的。不到一月的工夫，他终于想通了他被喇嘛选作父亲是大有道理的。
他的太太章珀尔听他说及儿子的神异，并无夸张的心理，她自己做梦也是不会反驳丈夫的。实际上，颇有声望的转世喇嘛（化身或呼图克图）（译注：呼图克图为蒙古语“圣者”之意，不过帝制时代有时用作封号）连达赖、班禅在内，不是也有降生在贫寒之家的吗？那么，这个拼命地吮她的乳的小孩是个呼图克图当然没有疑义了。这对于她没有什么稀奇，只不过充满了快乐，充满了希望罢了。那就是将来家计富裕，惠及亲属，受人崇敬，被人羡慕的一种希望。
这对充满喜乐的父母的一些朋友、邻居，不久竞公开宣布：小孩实在是个呼图克图，而且指出他的前身的名字。当然，老实说，形成这种看法，胜利中的父亲是起了微妙的作用的。
他们指出来的名字，是一位大人物，即故去不久的弥伴大师第十七世。弥伴第一世，数百年前在埃弗尔士峰（即珠穆朗玛峰——编者）角牟罔卡雪山苦修，以神通著称。以后继续转世，受人崇敬，至第十七世而大享世福。他是法轮寺以及四个小寺的寺主，掌有百姓众多的庙产，生活极为豪华。这位十八世待位小喇嘛，凭借上一辈的余荫，将会更有财富、更有势力无疑。
到了给孩子命名的时候，父亲毫不迟疑地选择了“弥伴”，意即“不败”、“不可摧毁”，以溯本源，且兆将来。
问卦于两位卜者，卜者亦异口同声，说是名字全与卦象相合。
辍莫村的一对村夫村妇，就这样悬想他们的儿子将来的命运。
二尽管作出这样的判断，弥伴仍和旁的小孩一样成长起来。先爬行，后学步，蹀躞于箱子垫子之间。（藏俗，箱子垫子即是座位，不用椅凳）。
无人教他说话。因为西藏没有教小孩说话的风俗。他们以为，人的说话，有如牛鸣犬吠，各以其类，自然而能。试看一切藏民小孩，不都是不经人教而会说藏话吗？不过藏孩比别的孩子说话较晚，也是事实。弥伴两岁的时候，还只是会哭。他哭叫起来，声音嘹亮，证明体质特别强壮，足使父母放心：只是喊些什么，则不管怎样解释，也无半点流利藏语的痕迹。
三法轮寺的当局寻觅寺主弥伴第十八辈转世活佛的时候，即在小孩弥伴i岁的那年。消息传播开来，有如燎原之火，远近皆知。彭错为了预备觅佛使者的来临，把可以证明他的孩子就是那位呼图克图的转世的一切征兆，搜集得无一遗漏，解释得天衣无缝。
此外，他还请了他所崇奉的教派中的两位喇嘛念经，还祈求他的族中保护神、章珀尔族中的保护神，以及当地的山神土地，多加保佑。为了万无一失，又请了一位巫术师，作法念咒，以便得到一切神仙鬼怪的灵庇，至少也要他们不致故意为难。每一次法事，除了主事者外，都另有数名学徒参加。
杀一牛一豕，用各种方法，以饷喇嘛和巫术师。
另以豕一头、鸡数只，作为巫术师作法时的牺牲。
母亲打发两个孩子至邻右农家找来一些鸡蛋，亲手制一盆“汉人羹”（即汤面条——编者），并做酒醴，以备大量醮奠之用。
到了预定的那天，本波教的巫术师（佛教输入以前之教）在天不亮的时候就来在门前树下作法。过了不久，两个喇嘛跟着徒弟也从山上寺庙降临，出现于村旁山坡。在他们前面，三个徒弟吹着人腿骨的号（可以真是人腿骨，也可以是模仿其形的铜器），使人知道他们到了。
