Content Description

小说的主角是个有健康神经和良好血液的雇工，来自韦姆兰省，40岁上下的卡尔松。他到比他年长的寡妇福洛德太太拥有的海姆素岛打点农庄。主人的独子古斯藤只爱打猎和捕鱼。卡尔松懂农活，有生意头脑，他在休耕的地里种苜蓿，将空着的房子租给夏天的度假客，等等，成功进行了改革，改善了农庄经济。福洛德太太出于农庄经营的需要，更出于性的欲望，用农庄主的身份诱惑卡尔松，卡尔松在一段与城市姑娘的无望恋爱后积极响应了福洛德太太，两人成婚。婚后的卡尔松怠惰起来，妻子小产，他逼她立遗嘱，让自己承继农庄。妻子在冬夜跟踪私通的卡尔松和女佣，冻出了病。垂危时，她让儿子烧毁遗嘱。在将卡尔松太太的棺材运往教堂的长途跋涉中，棺材掉进海里的冰窟窿。突起的东风让冰冻的海面崩裂成大海。在海水的追赶下，卡尔松淹没；幸存的古斯藤成为海姆素岛新主人。

Author Description

奥古斯特·斯特林堡（August Strindberg，1849-1912），剧作家、小说家、诗人。生于斯德哥尔摩。早年丧母，内心敏感。曾入乌普萨拉大学，后辍学，当过报社记者、图书馆管理员等。1879年以小说《红房间》成名。斯特林堡虽成名很早，且在瑞典文坛独领风骚40年，但长期生活窘迫，社会问题上的激进态度使他被放逐，妇女问题上的保守、三度婚姻的波折让他频受打压，一度陷入精神错乱。著作丰富，代表作有《红房间》《朱丽小姐》《结婚》《疯人辩词》《海姆素岛居民》等。

《海姆素岛居民》：
他像旋风一般，在一个四月的晚间来了，脖子上用皮带挂了一只赫格奈斯陶罐①。克拉拉和洛藤摇了鲱鱼船去达拉岛码头接他。然而，等他们再回到船上，真像是被耽搁了永久。他们得上零售商那儿弄上一桶焦油，进药房去拿给猪杀害虫用的汞软膏，再跑邮局买张邮票，去“大拐弯”处的费娅·勒弗斯特罗姆那儿，用半磅②左右的编网细线跟她借一只公鸡，最后，他们到了客栈，在那儿，卡尔松请姑娘们喝了咖啡，还外带小点心。这么着，他们终于回到船上。卡尔松要掌舵，他其实不会，先前压根没见过横帆船，可他喊道，得升高前桅的大帆——那其实根本就不存在。
海关码头上站着领航员和搬运工，他们对着小船上的指挥咧嘴大笑；这时，船帆让风吹偏了方向，朝向了萨尔特塞肯。
“喂，你船上有洞①，”一名见习领航员的喊声透过风传来，“堵住！堵住！”卡尔松忙着找船上的洞时，克拉拉挤开他，抓过舵去；洛藤操起桨，把小船又弄成了侧迎风，现在能以蛮不错的速度朝着阿斯普海峡开了。
卡尔松是个小个头、四方脸的韦姆兰人，蓝眼睛，鼻子弯得活脱就是姊妹钩。他精力充沛、顽皮、好奇，可海上的事他一点不懂，他是被唤到海姆素岛②照管田地和牲畜的——自打福洛德老头走了，寡妇孤单单呆在农庄，可就没别的人愿意管这些了。
不过这会儿，卡尔松打算着手从姑娘们那儿挤点岛上生活的情形和人际关系出来，他得到了典型的岛民式答复：

小船在多岩石、少植被的小岛和不毛的石头小岛间飞溅着水花向前，长尾鸭在岩石后嘎嘎叫唤，黑色的雄松鸡在云杉林里低鸣，小船穿过海湾和激流，直到暮色沉降，星星一个个列队跑出来。这会儿，小船进入一片宽阔水域，那里赫乌德斯雪尔的灯塔眨了眨眼。有时，他们漂过一只扫把航标①，有时漂过一只看起来跟鬼一样的白航标。忽而是残留的飘雪，像是在漂白的亚麻布；忽而是漂浮的渔网浮标跳出黑色水面，船从那上头驶过时，浮标刮擦了龙骨；忽而一只假寐的鸥受惊地从它的孤岩上立起，燕鸥和海鸥们吹打出一片噪音，活像拉警报，比魔鬼还糟。而最远处，星星走进大海的地方，能看见一艘大蒸汽船的一只红眼睛、一只绿眼睛，蒸汽船拖了一长排圆形的、从沙龙的舷窗透射出来的光亮。

小船在这当口固定在了木桥码头的尾端，卸货开始了。船帆卷在桁端，桅杆放下了，拉索拿木滑钩卷了起来。焦油桶被推上了岸，桶、罐、篮子和包袱转眼间都立在了木桥码头上。
在半明半暗中，卡尔松打量四周，只瞧见新奇和不熟悉的东西。木桥码头外有绞车，上头荡着鱼篓，沿木桥长边的一侧有扶手，上头挂满浮标、系船绳、钩锚、砝码、线、延绳、钩子，而鲱鱼桶、水槽、鱼虾篮、大桶、大缸和延绳盒子堆在支架板上。桥头有个船屋，里面挂满了做猎鸟诱饵用的，塞得鼓鼓的欧绒鸭、红胸秋沙鸭、斑脸海番鸭、鹊鸭；而在檐下的架子上，有帆、桅杆、橹、船钩、桨架、水舀子、碎冰锥、淡水鳕棒。岸上立着树桩子，挂着的鲱鱼网那么大，跟最大的教堂窗户似的。比目鱼网的网眼简直伸得进手臂，新结的鲈鱼网自得仿佛是最好的雪橇网①，从木桥码头往上，延伸着一条路，像是绅士宅第的通道，道旁是两行叉状柱子，柱子上挂着拖拉大围网。路的最上方，提灯晃了过来，把光柱打在沙石道上，道上有贝壳和干鱼鳃的闪光，而拖拉大围网里残留的鲱鱼鳞闪烁，就像是白霜落在蜘蛛网上。灯也照射着一张看来被风吹得干巴巴的老女人的脸，一双小小的、和善的眼睛，因为常年盯着炉火而缩皱着。杂种狗跑在她前头，那是个毛茸茸的家伙，它在海边看来和在陆地上一样自在。
“喂，亲爱的，是你们到家了吗？”老女人招呼着，“把小伙子也带来了？”
“是呀，我们回来啦，卡尔松也在，大婶你瞧！”克拉拉说。
