后一段是说，人人都能达到温饱却是件不容易的事。站在夕阳里的向喜举着一棵瘦弱的谷穗，他想，面对这块不毛之地还谈什么桑蚕丝绸和温饱呢？我也不会去从我爹碗里抢肉吃，我爹碗里缺的就是肉。在以后的日子里，向喜常常想起孟子这番说教。那时向喜已不再挑担走路，时局纷杂，乱世出英雄，一时间能称雄称王者是大有人在的。向喜不具王者之位，但桑丝温饱已不在话下——这又是后话。
夕阳中的向喜扔掉瘦弱的谷穗继续走路，笨花越来越近了。转眼间日落西山，近处的茅草和猪耳朵棵，远处的屋宇已逐渐模糊。向喜来到一块杂草丛生的空地上，这里原是邻村一户官宦人家的风水坟茔，茔道上还矗立着石象生，笨花人管这里叫“石人石马”。如今石人石马早就人无头马无尾，但当地人仍然借这里的风水，胡乱埋些亡灵，这“石人石马”便成了一处乱坟岗。村人多忌讳在此停留，向喜却不然，每过此处，总要放下担子歇息片刻。向喜在石人石马前放下担子，坐在一匹石鞍马上看西山的太阳是如何隐没于山那边，看天上的余晖是如何渐渐失却颜色。向喜的家乡没有山，只有平地和平地。山在西边五十里以外。向喜看山是看西边的远山，远山像一脉平原上突起的长城，那长城自北向南蜿蜒开去。城墙上有一带平坦的突起，像盘磨，人们就叫它磨山。还有一带突起像个大桃子，人们就叫它桃山。眺望远山的向喜常常盼望自己能走到山前看个究竟，看桃山是不是还像桃子，磨山是不是还像一盘磨。他听上过山的人说，在远处看山有桃子有磨，挨到跟前反而再也找不到桃子和磨了，在山里你还会连你自己也找不到。在后来的日子里，向喜见过了山，那时他却忘记寻找桃子和磨，他饱尝的是翻山越岭之苦。
向喜坐在石马上看山时，一位老者忽然自乱坟岗里朝他走来。老者鹤发童颜，两眼有神，他突兀地站在向喜跟前拱手施礼道：“少掌柜的，罐里可还有吃食？”这里人卖豆腐脑儿不挑锅，担子一头挑只大沙罐，灰黑的沙罐像只小水缸，罐口盖个草蒲墩，为的保温。另一头是只带条盘的木箱，条盘上有碗、勺和各种作料。向喜对突现在眼前的老者有几分奇怪：他是从何而来呢？再看老者的衣着也不似常人，显得整洁飘逸。不过他懂得来的都是客，便顾不得多想，迅速起身拱手还礼道：“大伯哟，准是走饿了吧？我这沙罐里倒真还有个底儿，大伯坐。”向喜边说边从扁担上解下一只条凳请老者坐下，盛上一碗豆腐脑儿，放些作料端给老者。老者接过碗，不吃，只拿勺子搅着碗说：“怎么也不见个油星儿？”向喜这才想起他忘了在碗里滴香油，便连忙拿起油罐，从罐中提出一个用秫秸秆穿着的铜钱。笨花人吃香油，吃的都是这种“钱儿油”，铜钱带出的油少，油便吃得省。可是当向喜给老者滴“钱儿油”时，却见油罐里已经无油。他只得把油罐倒过来亮给老者说：“不瞒您说，罐里该添油了。”老者看看向喜手里的空油罐，知道向喜没诓他，才安心吃起少了香油的豆腐脑儿。向喜想，这位老者，吃得还真细致。
