《红楼梦》全书以贾宝玉、林黛玉二人的爱情悲剧为主线，以贾、王、史、薛四大家族兴衰沉浮为背景，描写了封建贵族家庭各种错综复杂的矛盾，全面真实地展现了广阔复杂的社会现实生活，淋漓尽致地描述了多姿多彩的世俗人情，是一部百科全书式的长篇小说。它改变了以往长篇小说情节和人物单线发展的特点，创造了一个宏大而完整的艺术结构，情节左右生支，人物有隐有现，但层次井然，浑然天成。
本书作者曹霑，字梦阮，号雪芹，大约生于康熙五十四年乙未（1715年），卒于乾隆二十七年壬午除夕（1763年）。他出身官宦世家，少年时因家产被官府查抄而由贵族子弟跌入社会底层，饱经世态炎凉，遍尝辛酸痛苦，对封建社会有了清醒而深刻的认识。因此，他“披阅十载，增删五次”，最终成就了中国古典小说史上的巅峰巨著。

《红楼梦》是中国四大古典文学名著之一，自诞生以来，便成为中国乃至世界文学宝库中的明珠。在现存的诸多版本中，程伟元和高鹗于乾隆五十六年（1791年）以活字排印行世的“程甲本”被学术界认为是接近原著风格的印本。本书是以程甲本为底本，参考其他抄本和刻本整理而成的，以较大限度地使读者领略到原汁原味的《红楼梦》。本书还配有一百多幅清刻版画，画面清晰，古风古韵，让读者能够全身心体验到“红楼人”的爱恨情仇与命运沉浮，亲身领略到“红楼”的经久魅力。
