Author Description

丹尼尔·笛福（Daniel Defoe，1660—1731），英国作家、新闻记者，英国启蒙时期现实主义小说的奠基人，被誉为英国和欧洲的“小说之父”。笛福早年经商，也从事写作，以写政论文和讽刺诗*称。他反对封建专制，主张发展资本主义工商业。在59岁时，他开始写作小说。其代表作《鲁滨逊漂流记》中，乐观又勇敢的鲁滨逊通过努力，凭借智慧和勇气战胜了困难，表现了当时追求冒险，倡导个人奋斗的社会风气。同时，鲁滨逊也成为与困难抗争的典型。

《鲁宾逊漂流记（全译本）》：
我是家中的小儿子，学无专长，脑子里很早就装满了远游的梦想。年迈的父亲把我安排在公费学校读书，让我接受了相当不错的教育，除了必要的家庭教育外，还让我去乡村免费学校接受义务教育，一心一意筹划着将来让我研习法律。但除了航海，任何事情对我都了无生趣，提不起兴致。我对父亲的意愿，或者不如说是命令拗着干，也使我对母亲及一帮朋友的忠告和劝说充耳不闻。我这种固执乖戾，一意孤行的脾气秉性，注定了我未来悲惨的命运。
由于我那睿智而严肃的父亲充分预见到我那梦想将会给我带来的不幸，故而给了我许多严厉精辟、苦口婆心的忠告。一天早晨，父亲把我叫到他的房间（父亲倍受风湿病痛的折磨而行动不便），和蔼地对我说，他想知道，除了满足我想在海外瞎闯的念头、天性喜欢游荡的癖好外，我为什么要离弃家庭、背井离乡呢。在家里，我依靠家人的帮助，经人引荐，再加上自己的实干和勤奋，定有光明的前途，过上安逸而舒适的生活。他告诉我，只有那些穷困潦倒之徒或上流阶层不安分之辈或是财大气粗之人，才会去海外游历，靠铤而走险发迹，指望另辟蹊径成名。以我的社会地位而言，这两种情况，对我来说是高不成低不就，我居于二者之间，即所谓的中间阶层。以父亲长期的社会经验判断，这恰是世界上最完美的阶层，最符合人类幸福的标准。它既不同于体力劳动者那样纵然吃苦受累仍是衣食无着，也不像上层阔人那样因骄奢淫逸、野心猜忌和相互算计而弄得心力交瘁。父亲告诉我，只需注意一下，我就可以判断出中间地位的生活幸福不幸福。帝王们常常感叹其高贵出身伴随而来的不幸与束缚，恨不得自己处于两级之间，既不渺小又不伟大。众多明智之人把既不贫穷也不富有①作为追求真正幸福的标准。
父亲要我注意一下，就不难发现，上层社会和下层社会之人都多灾多难、命运起伏、祸福难料，而中间阶层灾祸最少，也不会像前两种人那样沉浮不定。
中层人身心平静，前两类人，一类因生活挥霍无度、骄奢淫逸而心力交瘁、身心俱疲，另一类为了温饱而终日操劳、憔悴不堪，这两种生活方式必然导致身心动荡不安。中产阶级生活方式囊括了所有的美德和快乐。平和与富裕是中产阶层的随身之宝。他又说，遇事冷静，中庸克己，温和谦逊，安宁健康，娱乐交友，以及种种称心如意的志趣，所有这些福分都属于中间阶层的人们。在这种状态的人们可以怡然自得地过日子，既不必劳心费力，为每日生计劳作或为窘境所迫，过着奴隶般的生活，使得身心俱疲，劳心伤神，得不到片刻安宁；也不必为成名发财的欲望所困扰。
相反，这类人在悠然的环境中从容不迫地生活，尽情地品尝生活的甜美，这种幸福感随着每天的过去，会有愈来愈深的体会。
