《西游记》取材于唐代高僧玄奘赴西天取经的真实经历，以丰富瑰奇的想象描写了唐僧师徒四人赴西天取经，历经九九八十一难的故事。全书以丰富的艺术想象力建构了一个绚丽多彩的神魔世界，塑造了孙悟空、猪八戒等性格鲜明、栩栩如生的人物形象，并使这些人物最终成为经典的文学形象，数百年来一直为人们所喜闻乐见。
《西游记》作者吴承恩（1500—1582），字汝忠，号射阳，明朝嘉靖年间淮安府山阳县（今江苏淮安）人。他自幼喜欢读野言稗史，熟悉古代神话和民间传说，潦倒大半生，长期靠卖文补贴家用，晚年出任长兴县丞，但因痛恨官场黑暗，愤而辞官，贫老以终。

作为中国四大古典文学名著之一，《西游记》一直是世界神话传奇书籍中的经典。它缔造了浪漫主义文学的新境界，使其得以与写实小说分庭抗礼；它开拓了神魔小说的新领域，确定了神魔小说在长篇小说中的独立地位。《英国大百科全书》认为它是“中国一部较珍贵的神奇小说”。

本书以现存版本中刊本较早的《新刻出像官板大字西游记》（即世德堂本）和刊本较早、内容较为完整的《李卓吾先生批评西游记》（简称李评本）为底本，参考其他版本整理完成的，配有一百多幅明刻版画，画面清晰，古风古韵，能够让读者切实体会到古人眼中的西游世界。
