童年山丫
山丫生在山里一个贫困家庭。五六岁时山丫赤脚在街上跑，街坊都说这小闺女活像个男孩：粗腿大棒，浑浑实实的小身子，泼泼辣辣……小时候她就是男孩儿们的伙伴。
7岁那年冬天，小街中心冻了一溜冰，几个靴帽整齐的男孩轮着班地在那一溜冰上滑，刺溜刺溜好快活。山丫上身只穿个空心棉袄，下身穿条夹裤，赤着脚蹲在朝阳的房墙前晒日头看小伙伴们滑冰，心中好羡慕，好着急，心里也想滑一下。但是她脚上没穿鞋怎么滑？看时间长了，山丫心里痒得受不了，倏地站起来赤脚跑过去，抽空在冰面上滑一趟就又跑到房墙前晒日头暖和。
这时，她心里挺美。
山丫8岁的秋天，她赶着毛驴从山上往家送花生、地瓜就顶个人用。赶下的小黑驴倒听吆喝不犯刁。花生送到家，妈给卸下驮子，再把山丫抱上驴背。山丫坐在驴背上，手里扯着缰绳，嘴里不时地喳喳吆喝着，挺自在地就回到地里，一趟一趟地。
山丫这就顶个人用了。
山丫10岁就能扛个锄同妈妈一起到地里锄草。这年夏天，母女俩锄地到了半天晌，天下起蒙蒙细雨，妈妈说：天下雨了，咱回家去。回到家就快到做中午饭的时间了，妈妈把剩菜剩饭拾掇进锅里盖上锅盖，低下头用烧火棍拨弄着锅灶下的草灰，草灰里预先埋的火种灭了。她到灯窝里拿过火柴盒扒开：盒里只剩下五六根火柴，这是家中唯有的一盒火柴，多是在灶下草灰里没有火种的时候才开盒取支火柴来应急用。
妈妈一看火柴盒里没几根火柴，便拿过通常备用的一个借火的一头烧黑了的火纸卷儿递给山丫，说：
“出去到别人家借个火儿！”
“盒里有火柴，还用去人家借火？”
“不是省一根火柴吗？闲着你也是闲着！”
“上谁家借？做晌午饭还早着呢。”
“谁家烟囱冒烟就上谁家借！”妈妈声色俱厉后，“小孩子不干这个事儿，等大人去干？”
山丫手握着一个两端露在小手外头的火纸卷出了门。山丫借过火，她站在街头望空中看各家的房脊立起来的那些烟囱：她发现隔着一条街的西头有家烟囱冒着白烟。山丫去了那家点着了火纸卷儿赶紧往回走，正赶上天下蒙蒙细雨，没走多远，纸卷的火头被雨淋灭了。急忙又折回去点了火，走不远又灭火了。第三次，山丫点着火后，干脆用一双小手捂包着烧着后的红纸头往家里飞快地跑……气喘吁吁地跑到家，她妈在锅灶口塞满草等山丫借火来等得着急，即粗着嗓子说山丫：
“上外头儿借火这时候也回来啦！”
“外面下小雨，点着火两回都给淋死了……”山丫哭丧着脸噘起小嘴看着发怒的妈妈。
妈妈接过山丫递过来的火纸卷儿，一口气儿吹掉纸卷头上的纸灰，火纸卷露出红红的火头，还冒股细烟儿。她把红火头触向灶下的杂草，低下头，歪着脖子一个劲儿地吹那红纸头和草接触的地方，好一会儿，灶口里的杂草冒了烟儿，火，生着了。妈妈松口气儿抬头看山丫：山丫擎着两只手看手掌。妈妈扳过山丫的手：两小手掌被火纸头烧了两个红燎泡．一手掌一个……
“丫子——痛吗？”妈痛心地问。
“不痛……”山丫摇着头，泪珠儿从眼里掉下来。
“唉！——为了省那一根‘火柴’……”妈妈摸着丫子的小手，好一阵酸楚。
霜降的头一天，山丫赶着毛驴往家送地瓜。上午送第一趟地瓜，背阴处的霜还没化，山丫赤着小脚，手扯着驴缰绳随着驴吧嗒吧嗒踏着霜地走，走进村东的那条洋槐林子沟，这是山丫最害怕的地方，洋槐沟树密路窄，尤其还有个小陡坡。每当驴走到下坡时，山丫便拽住驴缰绳，嘴不住地吆喝“吁——吁——吁——”头天，驴在下到半坡时突然跪了下来，吓得山丫直叫妈，亏了周围收秋的大人跑过来，抬起驮子帮着把驴送下坡……
今天，这第一趟送地瓜，还没走到那个坡时，山丫的心就提了起来，一到下坡，山丫的小嘴告急似的就“吁——吁——吁”地吆喝起来——生怕驴还像昨天那样跪下来。不料想，这趟驴在下坡没跪下来，驴驮篓却挂上了树权翻滚下来，驮篓翻下来，地瓜撒了一下坡，驴被驮篓这一翻滚吓得四蹄乱刨往家奔跑。
