夕暮笼罩着院子里的一棵浅葱樱。紧闭的格子纸门外的廊子一尘不染，静谧无声。房内的小型长火盆搁着一只铁壶正在烧水，火盆前有个绞缬纺绸坐垫。甲野的母亲端正地坐在坐垫上。她那炯炯有神的上吊眼梢表皮内侧似乎隐藏着一条歇斯底里的青筋，绕过后头部再穿出额头，只是脸部皮肤浅黑细致，外貌看上去极为温和——让对方紧握内藏细针的海绵后，必须马上为对方的柔手贴膏药，和蔼地安慰对方说，伤口很快就会痊愈。最好用嘴唇吸吮流血的局部，表示自己没有恶意——生于二十世纪的人必须记住此道理。露骨者亡。——甲野曾在日记如此写着。
静谧的廊子响起脚步声。一双细长的脚穿着看似刚拆封的紧绷白布袜，踢着什锦厚反褶长裙下摆，无声地拉开纸门。
母亲维持坐姿，半扬起浓眉瞄着门口说：“原来是你，进来吧。”
藤尾无言地背手关上门。当她隔着火盆坐在母亲对面时，铁壶频频发出响声。母亲望着藤尾。藤尾垂着眼皮望着火盆旁折成两半的报纸——铁壶依旧在作响。
话多时无真言。默不作声相对而坐的母女不理铁壶的响声，廊子很安静。浅葱樱正在引诱夕暮降下。
春天正在逐步消逝。
藤尾终于抬起脸：“他回来了吧？”
母女双眼对视。真实隐藏在一瞥中。不堪沸热时才会露出骨头。
“哼。”
长旱烟管“当”一声地敲掉燃尽的烟灰团。
“不知他打算怎样？”
“谁知道他打算怎样？那个人心中到底在想什么，连我也猜不出。”
肉薄高骨的鼻孔不客气地吹出云井烟。
“回来了还是一样吧？”
“当然一样。他终生都那个样子。”母亲的暴躁青筋从表皮内浮出。
“他真那么讨厌继承这个家吗？”
“他是口是心非，才更难应付。他故意那样说是想让我们难堪……如果他真不想要财产也不要任何东西，不是该找个工作养活自己吗？毕业后都两年了，每天游手好闲。就算是学哲学的，也应该有能力养活自己啊。真是婆婆妈妈，我每次看到他都会忍不住发火……”
“看来他完全听不懂我们的暗示。”
“听得懂也会装蒜。”
“真令人讨厌。”
“就是啊。他要是继续这样下去，我就没办法安排你的事……”
藤尾不作答。爱情隐藏着一切罪恶，藤尾决定在开口之前供出所有一切牺牲。
母亲继续说：“你今年不是已经二十四了吗？哪有二十四岁还没嫁人的……我和他商量你的婚事，他竟然不让你嫁出去，说以后要你负责照顾我，既然这样，我想他大概会找个工作独立生活，没想到他每天只会关在房里躺着……而且还向别人说要把财产全让给你，他要出去流浪什么的。别人还以为是我们要把他赶出去呢，这成什么体统啊？”
“他向谁说了这种话？”
“听说他到宗近家时对宗近父亲这样说的。”
“一点儿都不像个男子汉。他怎么不快点把糸子小姐娶进来呢？”
“他想娶糸子小姐吗？”
“我不知道哥哥怎么想，不过糸子小姐好像想嫁给哥哥。”
母亲卸下铁壶，取起火钳。渗满茶锈的萨摩烧茶壶表面描画着两三条蓝波，零星点缀着雪白的樱花，细碎的绿色宇治茶叶在午汤中泡得发涨，早已凉得黏糊一团。
“要不要重新泡茶？”
“不用了。”
藤尾在白茶碗中倒入已经失味却犹存余香的茶水。刚倒入碗底的黄水，颜色很淡，即将倒满时才逐渐加深颜色，深黄的水面半边冒着寸步不移的水疱。
母亲掏着每天掏习惯的火盆灰烬，再敲碎佐仓炭2的白色残骸，把红炭夹到一旁，接着挑选黑圆木炭放进温暖的已经坍塌的灰烬中，让其活蹦乱跳——房内的春光永远温和地笼罩着这对母女。
本书作者厌恶缺乏雅趣的对话。在猜疑不和的阴暗世界中，刻薄对话是一抹精彩，无奈此举并非挥美笔让熙春奔流于纸上的诗人作风。不继续描述闲花素琴春色天下，必得罗列毫无韵味的鄙俗词句时，犹如毫端蘸泥，实难以运笔。描写宇治茶、萨摩茶壶和佐仓木炭，无非偷闲片刻，让读者暂时远离阴暗世界，享受弹指间的欣慰而已。只是地球回转得比往昔快速。明暗不舍昼夜。简短描述这对母女的丑陋侧面，是此作者的迫切义务。写完品茶、火炭后，笔锋必须再度返回两人的对话。而且两人的对话必须比前一段更有趣。
“说到宗近，一那个人真是可笑。没学问也没其他成就，却老爱说大话……他自己还以为很了不起呢。”
马厩和鸡舍在同一处。听说母鸡对马的评语是：既不会报晓也不会生蛋。母鸡说得很有道理。
“他明明没考上外交官，却一点儿都不觉得丢脸。换成普通人，至少会再努力点吧。”
“他是颗子弹。”
这句话不明所以，却是句很干脆的评语。藤尾抿嘴笑着，光滑的脸颊现出波浪。藤尾是个懂诗的女人。糖果店的子弹是用黑糖揉成圆形，炮兵工厂的子弹是熔化铅而铸成，总之子弹就是子弹。但母亲竟认起真来，母亲不明白女儿为何而笑。
“你对他有什么印象？”
没想到女儿的笑容竟引起母亲的疑问。常言道，知子莫若父。这句话是错误的。倘若彼此的世界不交叉，即便是母子，也如同唐国人与天竺人。
“对他的印象……没什么印象。”
母亲目光敏锐地瞪着女儿，藤尾当然明白母亲的意思。知彼者不慌也。藤尾故意不慌不忙地等母亲先开口。母女间也会耍策略。
“你愿意嫁过去吗？”
“宗近家吗？”女儿反问，看来她打算张弓至满始发矢，才故意反问。
“嗯。”母亲随口答。
“我才不要呢。”
“你不愿意？”
“谁愿意啊……那种没品位的人。”藤尾决然地断句，正如切竹笋圆片那般。她那双浓眉正在起风，不想再提此话题般地紧闭双唇，但似乎又隐藏着某种一闪即逝的感情。
母亲打对槌地答：“我也不喜欢那种没前途的人。”
没品位和没前途是两回事——打铁师傅“叮”一声小锤落下，徒弟再“当”一声击落大锤。但两人打的是同一把剑。
“我们干脆现在就拒绝好了。”
“拒绝？我们有定亲吗？”
“定亲？没有。不过，你父亲说过要把那个金表送给他。”
“那又怎么了？”
“你以前把那金表当玩具，很爱玩那个红珠子……”
“然后呢？”
“然后……这个怀表和藤尾的关系虽然很深，但还是送给你。不过现在不给你，等你毕业后再给。只是藤尾可能会追着这个怀表一起跟去，你愿意吗？你父亲以前在大家面前半开玩笑地对一这样说过。”
“您现在仍把这句话当成是定亲约定吗？”
“听宗近父亲的口气，好像是这个意思。”
“无聊。”藤尾向火盆角掷出尖锐的一句，回音立即响起。
“当然无聊。”
“那金表是我的。”
“还放在你的房间吗？”
“收藏在我的文卷匣里。”
“哦。你真那么想要？你又不能挂那个表。”
“反正我要定了。”
装饰着芦雁图莳绘的文卷匣被搁在高处，表链尖端燃烧的那颗石榴石在文卷匣底发出妖媚亮光，正在向藤尾招手。藤尾“嗖”地起身。即将消逝的白昼仍苟存于走廊上，映出朦胧不清的高大浅葱樱影子，另一个鹅蛋侧脸影子在纸门内歪着头说：“那个怀表可以送给小野先生吧？”
纸门内没有传出应声——春天的暮色降在母女身上。
