《唐宋传奇集（上）》是我们历史上传奇一体由萌生直至繁荣再尽余绪的一个完整的发展过程，在整个中国文学史上都具有重要意义。并且，传奇题材广泛，多历史、政治、官场、市井、家庭、爱情婚姻、女性等内容，体现了古人生活中的丰富色彩，是宝贵的历史人文资料。唐宋传奇丰富的想象力与“文备众体”的写作方式，既吸收了诗歌传统的诗意美，同时也对后世小说、话本的发展有很大影响。唐宋传奇本无专门的辑本流传，后经鲁迅广搜善本，多方辑录，精心点校勘异后辑得《唐宋传奇集》一书，是历来学习研究唐宋传奇的最佳文本。著名学者蔡义江，依据鲁迅的辑本，将唐宋传奇逐篇翻泽为白话，并参考资料，有所补正。

Author Description

蔡义江，1934年生。著名红学家、学者、教授，国家级有突出贡献专家。浙江宁波人。1954年毕业于杭州大学（现改为浙江大学），留校任教于中文系、新闻系。1978年借调至京，筹创《红楼梦学刊》，成立中国红学会。1986年，调任民革中央常委、宣传部部长，创办团结出版社，兼任社长、总编辑，兼教于京杭高校。为六届、七届全国人大代表，八届、九届全国政协委员，全国政协教科文卫体委员会委员。现为中国红楼梦学会副会长、中国古典文学普及研究会副会长。在唐宋诗词、红学研究方面成绩卓著。出版的主要著作有：《红楼梦涛渊曲赋评注》（现称《红楼梦涛词曲赋鉴赏》）、《（红楼梦>是怎样写成的》、《论红楼梦佚稿》、《红楼梦校注》、《追踪石头——蔡义江论红楼梦》、《红楼梦丛书全编》、《稼轩长短句编年》（香港上海书局）、《辛弃疾年谱》、《唐宋诗词探胜》、《清代文学概论》（日本每日交流社）、《宋词三百首详析》（台湾建宏书局）、《怀我好音——诗词体裁与唐宋名篇鉴赏》等。

Book Abstract

淳于棼长期镇守外郡，跟朝中的文武官员都有交情，豪门贵族没有一个不和他要好一的。自从辞去郡守回到京城后，出入无常，结交很广，威望和享用一天比一天高。国王心中有些疑忌和惧怕。这时有人上书说：“天象有责罚我们的预兆，国家会有大灾难：到时候国都要迁移，宗庙要毁坏，事端是由别姓的宗族引起的，但灾祸却发生在自己内部。”当时人。们议论认为是淳于棼权势太盛并有非分的行为的应验。于是就调走了淳于棼的卫队，禁止他交游，把他软禁在家中。淳于棼自恃做了多年的州郡太守，没有什么不好的政绩，现在反遭流言蜚语的中伤，心里闷闷不乐。国王也知道他的心境，于是对他说：“我们做了二十多年的亲戚，不幸我的小女夭折，不能和你共度晚年，实在令人悲痛。”国王夫人便把外孙儿、外孙女留在身边亲自抚养。国王又对淳于棼说：“你离家已经很久了，可以暂回故乡，去探望一下亲戚。外孙儿女留在这里，不必挂念。三年以后，一定会派人去接你的。”淳于棼说：“这就是我的家了，叫我再回到哪里去呢？”国王笑着说：“你本住在人间，家并不是在这里。”淳于棼忽然好像在昏昏沉沉的睡梦中，迷迷糊糊过了很长时间，才想起以前的事，于是流着眼泪，请求回去。国王示意左右的人去送他，淳于棼拜了两拜就出来了。
淳于棼又看见以前那两个穿紫衣的差官跟着他。到了大门外，看见给他准备乘坐的车子很简陋，身边的亲信仆人一个也没有了，心中慨叹，感到十分奇怪。他上车走了大约几里路，又出了大城，一切都像当年东来时走过的路，山川原野，也依然如旧。送他的两个差官，毫无威严声势，淳于棼心里更加不愉快，他问差官道：“广陵郡什么时候可以到？”两个差官只管自得其乐地唱着歌，过了很久才回答道：“马上就到。”一会儿走出一个洞穴，淳于棼看见本乡的里弄，和以前没有什么改变，忍不住伤感起来，不知不觉地流下了眼泪。两个差官领着他下了车，进了门，走上台阶，他看见自己的身体躺在厅堂东边的廊屋里，感到惊奇害怕，不敢靠近。两个差官就大叫他的姓名好几声，他才醒过来。看见家里的仆人拿着扫帚在扫庭院，两个客人在床边洗脚，夕阳还没从西墙上落下，东窗下的酒杯里，还有喝剩下来的酒在那里闪着清光。梦是那么短暂，却好像已过了一生一样。
淳于棼感慨叹息，就把两个客人叫过来，告诉他们梦中的一切。他们都十分惊讶。于是和淳于棼一道走到外面，寻找槐树下的那个洞。淳于棼指点说：“这就是我梦中进去的地方。”两个客人都说恐怕是狐狸精和树妖在作怪.就叫仆人拿斧子，砍掉树干，掘断树根，寻找洞穴的源头。树旁一丈来远，有一个大洞相通，树根下明朗透亮，可以放得下一张床。树根上的地面堆着土，垒成城郭台殿的样子。有好几斛蚂蚁暗中聚集在里面。中间有个小台，颜色好像丹砂，两只大蚂蚁住在上面，白色的翅膀，红色的头，大约三寸来长，周围有几十只大蚂蚁护卫着，其他的蚂蚁不敢靠近：这就是他们的大王了，也就是槐安国的京城。
接着又挖到一个洞，直通南面的枝丫上，大约四丈远。曲曲折折的蚁穴如墓道一般，也有土城小楼，也有很多蚂蚁住在里面，这就是淳于棼治理过的南柯郡了。

Introduction

唐代是我国小说发展史上极重要的时代，要说我国的小说是从唐代开始的，这也没有什么不对，因为在唐以前，小说还处于雏型阶段，如六朝志怪小说，严格地说还算不上小说。只有到了唐代，才出现真正意义上的小说，那就是传奇。因其事属奇闻，或情节离奇，或传神奇怪异之说，故名，其实就是唐宋文言短篇小说。传奇之称是稍后才有的，它起于晚唐人裴铡的文言短篇小说集《传奇》（其书已佚），与后来戏曲中特别是明清时代以唱南曲为主的戏曲形式也称传奇是两码事。
作为文学作品的小说，从情节叙述到细节描写，都应该是有意识地运用想象和虚构，也必然有文采藻饰的铺陈和渲染，唐人传奇之有别于六朝志怪，而成为名副其实的小说，主要就在于这一点。鲁迅在他校录的《唐宋传奇集·序例》的开头，就引明代胡应麟的话说：凡变异之谈，盛于六朝，然多是传录舛讹，未必尽设幻语，至唐人，乃作意好奇，假小说以寄笔端。……宋人所记，乃多有近实者，而文采无足观。
“传录舛讹”往往出于人们头脑中神鬼怪异的迷信观念，而“作意好奇”或故“设幻语”，则是自觉地在运用文学创作手段。因而在表现上也就有精粗之分。唐传奇“叙述宛转，文辞华艳，与六朝之粗陈梗概者较，演讲之迹甚明，而尤显者乃在是时则始有意为小说”（《中国小说史略》）。此外，传奇的题材也比志怪大大扩展了，增加了许多社会内容。历史的、政治的、官场的、市井的、家庭的、爱情婚姻和妇女的……形形色色，丰富多采。人物塑造、情节构思、语言文字等等艺术技巧，也取得了突出的成就。同时也形成了传奇文体自己的特色，即不少作品往往文中有诗，韵散夹杂；以记叙为主，又兼有议论，也就是通常所谓的“文备众体”，对后来的小说也有很大的影响。总之，传奇的产生，使小说成了一种独立的文学形式。
传奇的发展，大体有几个阶段：初盛唐是志怪到传奇的过渡阶段，所存作品甚少，仅王度《古镜记》、无名氏《补江总白猿传》和张文成《游仙窟》三篇，内容多荒诞怪异。中唐是传奇最繁荣的黄金时期，作品数量多、质量高，现实性与社会意义也大大加强，诸如《枕中记》、《柳毅传》、《霍小玉传》、《南柯太守传》、《李娃传》、《长恨传》、《莺莺传》等名篇佳作，都产生于这一时期。晚唐时，传奇则趋向低落，数量虽仍不少，质量却大不如前；唯此时多传奇之专集，如牛僧孺《玄怪录》、李复言《续玄怪录》、牛肃《纪闻》、裴铡《传奇》、皇甫枚《三水小牍》等皆是。至宋代，已是余绪，文多迂腐拘板，无可称道。鲁迅在《序例》中有一段话，概括得十分精切，他说：王度《古镜》，犹有六朝志怪余风，而大增华艳。千里《杨娼》、柳程《上清》，遂极庳弱，与诗运同。宋好劝惩，摭实而泥，飞动之致，眇不可期，传奇命脉，至斯以绝。惟自大历以至大中中，作者云蒸，郁术文苑，沈既济、许尧佐擢秀于前，蒋防、元稹振采于后，而李公佐、白行简、陈鸿、沈亚之辈，则其卓异也，此可谓定论。
《唐宋传奇集》自鲁迅校录完毕之日起，迄今已有三分之二世纪，但它仍然是一部在一般阅读和专业研究上都非常有价值的书。用白话翻译出来，以方便读者，让它成为普及读物，使更多的人能观瞻我国唐宋时期优秀的古典短篇小说的丰采，确是一项很有意义的工作。
