赫索格是一位博学多识的大学教授，他品格高尚，为人敏感善良，但是现实生活却处处跟他过不去，特别是妻子玛德琳和挚友瓦伦丁的私情让他的精神处于崩溃的边缘。从此他变得行为怪诞，不停地给人写信，但一封也未寄出。他无论走到哪里，都提着这只装满信件的旅行包。和妻子离婚后，赫索格在纽约和花店女主人雷梦娜保持着若即若离的关系。雷蒙娜非常渴望和赫索格建立一个宁静的家庭，可是赫索格对婚姻已经害怕了。一天，他忽然心血来潮，回到芝加哥，一是看望女儿，二是想杀死前妻和瓦伦丁。但在目睹了瓦伦丁细心照顾他女儿洗澡后，打消了杀人的念头，积郁许久的恨刹那间都消失了。
他回到乡间旧屋，开始认真地回顾几年来的经历。不久，雷蒙娜闻讯也赶到这里。他为雷蒙娜打扫房间，安排饭菜，甚至为她准备了一大束鲜花……《赫索格》出版于1964年，1965年获美国国家图书奖，被英国读者选为二战后12部用英语创作的小说之一。

Author Description

索尔·贝娄（SAUL BELLOW，1915—2005），美国作家。生于加拿大魁北克省的拉辛，在蒙特利尔度过童年。一九二四年，举家迁至美国芝加哥。一九三三年，贝娄考入芝加哥大学。两年后，转入西北大学，一九三七年毕业，获得社会学和人类学学士学位。同年，赴威斯康星大学攻读硕士学位。之后长期在大学执教。一九五三年出版的《奥吉·马奇历险记》使他一举成名，奠定了他的文学地位。其后，陆续出版了《雨王亨德森》（1959）、《赫索格》（1964）、《赛姆勒先生的行星》（1970）、《洪堡的礼物）（1975）等。这些作品袒露了中产阶级知识分子的精神苦闷，从侧面反映了美国当代“丰裕社会”的精神危机。此外，贝娄还出版过中短篇小说集、剧本，以及游记。贝娄的一生可以说是集学者与作家于一身，他在创作上继承了欧洲现实主义文学的某些传统，并采用了现代主义的一些观念和手法，强调表现充满矛盾和欲望的反英雄。他曾三次获美国国家图书奖，一次普利策奖；一九六八年，法国政府授予他“文学艺术骑士勋章”；一九七六年，由于其作品“融合了对人的理解和对当代文化的精妙分析”，贝娄获得诺贝尔文学奖。

有些人确实认为他疯了，他自己也有一阵子怀疑过他的精神是否还正常。而现在，他的举止虽然仍有点怪诞，可是他感到信心百倍，轻松愉快，身强力壮，而且自以为慧眼超群。他整天给天底下的每个人写信，已经入了迷。这种信他越写越来劲，因此自六月底以来，他无论跑到哪里，随身必定带着一只装满信件的手提旅行箱。他带着这只箱子，从纽约到玛莎葡萄园，但立刻又转了回来；两天后，他飞往芝加哥，接着又从芝加哥前往马萨诸塞州西部的一个乡村，然后就躲在那里发狂似的没完没了地写起信来。写给报章杂志，写给知名人士，写给亲戚朋友，最后居然给已经去世的人写起来，先是写给和自己有关的无名之辈，末了就写给那些作了古的大名鼎鼎的人物。
伯克夏一带正是盛夏季节。赫索格独自呆在一幢老大的旧房子里。往常他十分讲究饮食，现在则靠啃光面包、罐头豆和干乳酪充饥。有时，他会跑到杂草丛生的花园里去采摘悬钩子，心不在焉地小心翼翼地把它们那长满刺的藤蔓牵起来。他睡的是一张没铺被单的床垫一一这是他久已弃而不用的结婚时的床——有时他就裹着大衣睡在吊床上。花园里，四周围着他的是长得高高的杂草、刺槐，还有小枫树。晚上醒来睁开眼，只见点点星光近似鬼火。当然，那不过是些发光体，是些气体：无机物、热量、原子，但在一个清晨五点和衣躺在吊床上的人看来，却是别有一番滋味在心头。
若遇心血来潮，突然想到什么新主意时，他就赶快跑到厨房——他的总部——去记下来。砖墙上的白漆已开始剥落，有时候，赫索格就用袖子抹去桌上老鼠咬下的碎屑，他不动声色地感到奇怪，野鼠怎么会对蜂蜡和石蜡这么感兴趣。凡是用石蜡封口的果酱瓶、蜜饯罐之类，都被它们咬得百孔千疮，生日用的蜡烛啃得只剩下烛芯。老鼠还光顾了一条面包，咬进一个洞，在里面留下自己的形状。赫索格涂上果酱，吃下了没有咬过的另外半条。他和老鼠也能分享食物了。
不管什么时候，他脑子里总有一角对外界敞开着。清晨，他听到乌鸦叫，觉得它们的聒噪十分悦耳。
黄昏时，他听到的是画眉的啭啼。晚上则有猫头鹰的悲鸣。当他被脑子里的信弄得激动起来，走进庭园时，他会看到玫瑰花绕在水笕上，或者是看到桑树以及在它枝头使劲啄食的小鸟。白天，天气炎热，黄昏时红霞似火，四周灰蒙蒙的一片。他睁大眼睛放眼望去，什么也看不清，几疑自己已经半瞎了。
他的朋友——他过去的挚友，和他的妻子——他的前妻，曾对人散布谣言说，他的神经已经失常。这是真的么？他绕着这座空房子走了一圈，在一扇布满蜘蛛网的灰蒙蒙的窗子上，看到了自己的脸影。他看上去显得出奇地安祥。一道光线从他的天庭，经过笔直的鼻子，照到他深沉宽厚的嘴唇上。
到春深时分，赫索格觉得再也受不了啦，他要进行解释，说出事情始末，要阐明自己的观点，为自己辩护，澄清事实真相，以正视听。
当时，他正在纽约一所夜校里给成年人上课。四月间，他的课讲得头头是道，条理分明，可是到了五月底，就开始有点东拉西扯，语无伦次了。他的学生这时也明白，他们从赫索格教授那里大概再也学不到多少“浪漫主义的由来”了，他们只等待着怪事的发生。果然，赫索格教授课堂内的礼节日见减少。他整天若有所思，说话时常有毫不自觉的坦率。到了学期末，他讲课时经常会久久地呆着说不下去，有时甚至干脆停了下来，喃喃地说声“对不起”，伸手从怀中掏出钢笔，使劲地在一些碎纸片上写起来，弄得讲台也吱吱嘎嘎作响。他全神贯注，眼圈发黑，苍白的脸上七情尽露。他在说理，在争辩，在经受着痛苦。他仿佛想出了一个了不起的变通办法。他似乎在神游四方，又像在钻牛角尖。他的渴望、固执、愤怒——他的眼睛和嘴巴的表情，把这一切都默默地暴露无遗。
