Author Description

路易十一（1423—1483），法兰西国土统一的奠基人，又称“万能蜘蛛”。1456—1461年，当时还在做王太子的路易十一因为屡犯父王查理七世，到勃艮第公爵的领地“避难”。在此期间，受薄伽丘的《十日谈》启发。他组织一批文人，模仿《十日谈》创作了《新十日谈》这部奇闻异事故事集，作为礼物献给勃艮第公爵。1461年查理七世去世后，路易十一继承了法国王位。

Book Abstract

不久前，在瓦伦西城里，有一位海瑙人，是个税务官，属于高贵的中产阶层。他的言行谨慎是人所共知的，他的慷慨大方更是值得人们赞美的品德，而且这使他能讨好王公贵族等社会各阶层的人。这种好运一直陪他到离开人世。这位好公民一生都不曾受婚姻的束缚。他在这个城中的住宅，即便是高贵的绅士也乐意将其据为己有。
他的住宅的位置特别好，邻近几个街道发生什么事，在那儿都能看得一清二楚。事实上，他的一面院墙上有扇门，对面住着一位正派人，他的老婆温文尔雅，美丽动人。时常有这样的事发生，她的眼睛——心灵的射手，向我们故事中的主人公发了那么多箭，以致他必须马上得到治疗，否则就要死掉。这位自由民很机智地找到了一种避免死亡的方法。他想了许多可行的计谋使他和那女人的丈夫交了朋友，而且两人的关系日益密切。后来这正派人就成了税务官家中的常客。不论是午餐、晚餐还是宴会，甚至包括在税务官家中（这种情况在哪儿都是一样）洗澡，很少有那邻居不在的情况。这位正派人对这种荣誉感到骄傲和快活。

这位丈夫走了几乎还不到一里格，税务官就知道他长久以来一直盼望的机会到来了。他马上准备沐浴。他吩咐仆人把浴缸烧热，并要求他们尽快备好上帝恩赐的丰盛食物（比如肉、馅饼、蛋糕和美酒）。家中一时忙活起来。
夜晚临近时，那扇把两家分开的门打开了。那女人一直等着黑夜的来临。天知道她受到了怎样盛情的款待，这些细节我就不提了。但我相信他们不会浪费时间，他们正彼此渴望着。
进了卧室之后，他们马上爬进浴缸里。他们面前摆放着匆匆备好的美酒佳肴。天知道他们是如何尽情畅饮的。我们没必要细述他们享用的菜肴，为了使我们的故事更简洁，我只需指出一点，对他们来说，这些酒宴实在是过剩了。
这一对儿就这样快快活活、欢欢乐乐地度过了这一夜的第一部分。他们不断地亲吻，之后要做的事自然是上床了。
就在税务官和邻居的老婆尽情享乐的时候，那位正派人敲起他们卧室的门来了。他已经旅行归来。当然他丝毫没意识到会碰上这等奇事。里面的两位起初不同意放他进去，直到他以圣父的名义证明是他本人才算罢了。那位正派人用响亮的声音回答里面的问话。
当他们辨出是他的声音时，那女人可是吓坏了，她那颗忠诚的心几乎要停止跳动了。如果不是那税务官和他的仆人劝她，她简直要无地自容了。这位好心的自由民非常平静和自信，他马上指挥她重新躺下，自己尽可能紧地跟她靠在一起，并且把她的脸全部遮起来。那位丈夫一下就闯了进去。他认为房间里一定有什么神秘的事，否则是不会让他在门外等候的。
当他看到满桌的酒菜，看到精美华贵的浴缸，看到税务官和一个女人躺在精致的床帏里时，天知道他是怎样用所有能从书中找到的话来诅咒他的。他先喊他流浪汉，又喊他蠢货，然后是道德败坏的、堕落的酒鬼。这位丈夫给税务官加了一大堆称号，在场的人无不哈哈大笑。当然除了他老婆。她不敢跟别人一起笑，她正用力咬着下巴。
“你，你这饭桶，为什么你要背着我举办这么丰盛的宴会！但即使我没有受到邀请参加你的婚礼，你也必须把新娘子给我瞧瞧。”
说完此话，他端起一支蜡烛就朝床走去。他想揭开那女人身上的披盖，瞧一瞧那肉体的完美形象（这个时候他的老婆正在为自己的所作所为进行忏悔呢）。那位自由民和他的仆人们不允许他这么做。他不是这房子的主人，不可能为所欲为。然而最后，他还是用非常巧妙的诡计使他的好奇心得到了满足，并且觉得很有味儿。
税务官同意将那女人的背部给他观瞧。她雪白健壮的腰身，她的大腿，以及她那最生动的部分，他把这一切都展示给他的邻居——那女人的丈夫，但无论如何也不把她的脸暴露出来。那好伙计手里端着蜡烛，目光呆滞，一时间张口结舌。而他一开口说话，便是高声称赞这位女人的美丽。他诚恳地发誓说，他从未见过任何一个女人的臀部和他老婆的那么相似；如果不能肯定他的老婆此刻正呆在家里，他就会发誓眼前这个女人就是他的老婆。
那女人很快又被盖上了，这位丈夫也郁郁不欢地退了下去。但天知道那些仆人是怎样轮番劝解他的。他们说他搞错了，他的评论玷污了他老婆的名声，他看到的这个跟税务官躺在一起的完全是另一个人，这事他最终会搞清楚的。为了使这位丈夫恢复正常，税务官——他欺骗了这可怜的殉道者——吩咐仆人们让他的客人就餐。他一坐下就自斟自饮，对着此刻正在床上作乐的两位吃剩的酒席，放开肚子吃喝了个够。到了告别的时刻，这位丈夫向税务官和在场的人道了声晚安，并且说他想从那扇把他们两家分开的门回去，这样他可以快一些。但税务官说天已经晚了，他现在绝对找不到门上的钥匙，而且即使找到，那把锁也可能已经锈得打不开了。
这位好伙计最后只能从正门出去，绕远路回家。那些一直在聊天的仆人引他到大门口，就这样使可怜的鱼儿上了钩。再看那女人，她立刻从床上跳下来，迅速穿上衣服，抄起外套就朝那扇门奔去。她很快就到了家。随后她就在那儿等她的丈夫，因为他要绕很长一段路。这女人很清楚她目前的境况，她也明白如何对付它。
