Author Description

苏童，生于一九六三年，江苏苏州人。一九八○年考入北京师范大学中文系，一九八三年开始发表小说。一九八七年发表《一九三四年的逃亡》使其成为“先锋派”的主将。一九八九年以后的创作风格有所变化，从形式回到故事，尝试以老式方法叙述一些老式故事，《妻妾成群》是典型的代表作。此部作品被张艺谋改编成电影《大红灯笼高高挂》，获奥斯卡金像奖提名。小说《米》、《红粉》、《妇女生活》也先后被搬上银幕。现任江苏省作协副主席，多部作品被译成英、法、德、意等文字。

男孩小拐出生于一月之夜，恰逢大雪初歇的日子，北风吹响了屋檐下的冰凌，香椿树街的石板路上泥泞难行，与街平行的那条护城河则结满了厚厚的冰层。小拐的母亲不知道她的漫长的孕期即将结束，她在闹钟的尖叫声中醒来，准备去化工厂上夜班。临河的屋子里一片黑暗，拐的母亲在黑暗中摸索了一会儿，提起竹蓝打开了面向大街的门。街上的的积雪已经结成了苍白的冰碴，除了几盏暗淡的路灯，街上空无一人。
小拐的母亲想在雨鞋上绑两道麻绳以防路滑摔跤，但她无法弯下腰来，小拐的母亲就回到屋里去推床上的男人，她想让他帮忙系那些麻绳。男人却依然呼呼大睡着，怎么也弄不醒。小拐的母亲突然着急起来，她怕是要迟到了。她对着床上的男人低低咒骂了几声，决定抄近路去化工厂上班。小拐的母亲选择从结冰的河上通过，因为河的对岸就是那家生产樟脑和油脂的化工厂。她打开了平时锁闭的临河的后门，拖着沉重的身体下到冰河上，像一只鹅在冰河上蹒跚而行，雨鞋下响起一阵细碎的冰碴断裂的声音。小拐的母亲突然有点害怕。她看见百米之外的铁路桥在月光里铺下一道黑色的菱形阴影、似乎有一列夜间货车正隆隆驶向铁路桥和桥下的冰河。小拐的母亲甩绿头巾包住她整个脸和颈部，疾步朝对岸的土坡跑去，她听见脚下的冰层猛地发出一声脆响，竹蓝从手中飞出去，直到她的下半身急遽地坠进冰层以下的河水中、她才意识到真正的危险来自于冰层下的河水。于是小拐的母亲一边大声呼救一边用双脚踢着冰冷的河水。她的呼救声听来是紊乱而绝望的，临河窗户里的人们无法辨别它来自人还是来自传说中的河鬼，甚至没有人敢于打开后窗朝河面上张望一下。
第二大凌晨，有人看见王德基的女人穿着红毛衣躺在冰河上。她抱着她的花棉袄，棉祆里包着一个新生的婴儿。
男孩小拐出生没几天他母亲就死了，在香椿树街的妇女看来，小拐能活下来是一个奇迹，她们对这个没有母亲的婴孩充满了怜悯和爱心，三个处于哺乳期的女人轮流去给小拐喂奶，可惜这种美好的情景只持续了两三个月。问题出在小拐的父亲王德基身上，王德基在那种拘谨的场合从来不回避什么，而且他有意无意地在喂奶的妇女周围转悠，那三个女人聚在一起时都埋怨王德基的眼睛不老实，她们觉得他不应该利用这种机会占便宜，但又不好赶他走。终于有一次王德基从喂奶妇女手中去接儿子时做了一个明显的动作，一只手顺势在姓高的女人的乳房上摸了一把。姓高的女人失声叫起来，该死，她把婴孩往王德基怀里一塞，你自己喂他奶吧。姓高的女人恼羞成怒地跑出王家，再也没有来过，姓陈和姓张的女人也就不来了。
”男孩小拐出生三个月后就不吃奶了，多年以后王德基回忆儿子的成长，他竟然不记得自己是怎么把小拐喂大的。他向酒友们坦言他的家像一个肮脏的牲口棚，他和亡妻生下的一堆孩子就像小猪小羊，他们在棚里棚外滚着拱着，慢慢地就长大了，长大了就成人了。
七十年代初期在香椿树街的男孩群中盛行一种叫钉铜的游戏，男孩们把各自的铜丝弯成线圈带到铁路上，在火车驶来之前把它放在铁轨上，当火车开走那圈铜丝就神奇地变大变粗了。男孩们一般就在红砖上玩钉铜的游戏，谁把对方的铜圈从砖上钉落在地，那个被钉落的铜圈就可以归为己有。
曾有一个叫大喜的男孩死于这种游戏，他翻墙去铜材厂偷铜的时候被厂里的狼狗吓着了，人从围墙上坠下去，脑袋恰恰撞在一堆铜锭上。大喜之死给香椿树街带来了一阵惶乱，人们开始禁止自己的孩子参与钉铜游戏，但是男孩们有足够的办法躲避家人的干扰，他们甚至把游戏的地点迁移到铁路两旁，干脆就在枕木堆上继续那种风靡一时的游戏。每个人的口袋里塞满了铜丝，输光了就临时放在轨道上等火车碾成铜圈，那年月来往于铁路桥的火车司机对香椿树街的这群孩子无可奈何，他们就一遍遍地拉响尖厉的汽笛警告路轨旁的这群孩子。
