《王子与贫儿》描写王子爱德华和贫儿汤姆在一个阴差阳错的偶然机会下，互相换了位置，王子变成了贫儿，贫儿成了王子。贫儿因穿着王子的衣服可以在王宫里尽享荣华富贵，还当上了英国的新国王。而真正的王子却在外四处流浪，不得不忍受贫穷和乞丐们的欺凌嘲讽。在好人亨顿的帮助下，爱德华王子经过了重重劫难，改掉了自己的坏习惯，终回到了王宫。而贫儿汤姆在良心的谴责下，将不属于自己的王位还给了真正的王子。此后，爱德华成了一位仁慈的君主，和他的子民一起过着幸福的生活。故事的想像极其丰富、语言幽默风趣，在带给儿童快乐的同时，还能极大地激发儿童的想象力和对纯洁、善良、美好事物的向往。

Author Description

马克·吐温（1835～1910），原名萨缪尔·兰亭·克莱门斯。是美国的幽默大师、小说家、作家，也是名演说家。实际上，“马克·吐温”是其常使用的笔名。虽然其家财不多，却无损其幽默、机智与名气，堪称美国*知名人士之一。

张友松（1903—1995），原名张鹏，湖南醴陵人。民盟成员，北京大学英文系肄业。曾任上海北新书局编辑，后创办春潮书局，任经理兼编辑。1925年发表处女译作《安徒生评传》。此后，通过英译本翻译了屠格涅夫的《春潮》、契诃夫的《三年》和施托姆的《茵梦湖》等作品。新中国成立后，曾任《中国建设》编辑；二十世纪五十年代被人民文学出版社聘为特约译者，开始翻译马克·吐温的作品。共译九部，是我国**名、*具特色的马克·吐温作品的中译者。

王子和贫儿的诞生十六世纪第二个二十五年当中有一个秋天，古老的伦敦城里有一个姓康第的穷苦人家生了一个他们不欢迎的男孩。同一天，一个姓都铎的富贵人家有一个正如心愿的男孩诞生了。全英国的人也都欢迎这个孩子。大家早已热烈地渴望着他，期待着他，并且为了祈求他的诞生而向上帝祷告，因此他现在一旦真的出世，全国的人就几乎是喜极若狂了，连稍稍相识的人都互相拥抱，互相亲吻，同声欢呼。大家都休假了，无论尊卑贫富，都大吃大喝地取乐，还跳舞、歌唱，非常快活；他们不分昼夜地像这样一连狂欢了好几天。白天，伦敦的景象真是热闹非凡，家家户户的阳台和屋顶上都有鲜艳的旗帜随风飘动，大街上有许多雄壮的队列在游行。夜间的景象也很可观，街头巷尾，处处都燃烧着大堆的篝火，四周围着一队队狂欢的群众，尽情作乐。全英国除了谈这个新生的孩子——太子爱德华·都铎以外，都不谈别的事情。
这个孩子浑身裹着绫罗绸缎，对于外面那一切无谓的热闹情况都无知无觉，也不知道还有许多大臣和贵妇在伺候着他，看护着他——而且他也满不在乎。
可是谁也没有谈到另外那个浑身裹着破布烂絮的孩子，汤姆·康第。他的出生徒然给这家穷人增加麻烦；除了他自己家里这些发愁的人谈到他以外，再也没有别人理睬他了。
二汤姆的幼年时代我们现在跳过若干年，来谈谈以后的事情吧。
当时伦敦已有一千五百年的历史，以那时候的规模而论，要算是一个大城市。全城有十万居民——有人认为比这还要多一倍。街道都很狭窄、弯曲而肮脏，尤其是汤姆·康第所住的那一带离伦敦桥不远的地方。那儿的房屋都是木头建筑的，第二层楼突出于第一层之外，第三层又把它的胳臂肘伸出第二层的范围。房子盖得越高，上面的面积也就越大。房屋的骨架是用结实的木料钉成交叉的形式，中间加上一些牢靠的材料，外面再涂上一层灰泥。房屋的主人按照各自的脾性把屋梁漆成红色、蓝色或黑色，这就使得那些房屋显出一副很雅致的气派。窗户都很小，嵌着菱形的小玻璃；窗扇都像屋门那样，是向外开的，装的枢纽也像门上的一样。
汤姆的父亲所住的房子在布丁巷外面一个名叫垃圾大院的肮脏小死巷里面。那所房子又小又破，东歪西倒，里面却挤满了一些穷得要命的人家。康第那一窝在三层楼上占着一个房间。母亲和父亲在一个角落里有一张也算是床的床铺；可是汤姆和他的祖母，还有他的两个姐姐——白特和南恩，却不受拘束——全部的地板都归他们享用，他们爱在哪儿睡就在哪儿睡。屋里有一两条破得不像样的毯子，还有几捆又旧又脏的稻草，可是要把这些东西叫作床铺，似乎不大妥当，因为它们是乱七八糟的；每天早晨，这些东西老是整个儿被踢成一大堆，到了晚上，大家再从这一堆里挑出来使用。
白特和南恩都是十五岁——一对双胞胎。她们是心肠很好的姑娘，满身肮脏，穿得非常破烂，愚昧透顶。她们的母亲也和她们相似。可是父亲和祖母简直是一对恶魔。他们只要有酒喝，就喝得烂醉；然后他们就互相打架，或是碰上谁就和谁相打；无论醉与不醉，他们老是咒骂不休。约翰·康第是个小偷，他母亲是个乞丐。他们把孩子们都教成了叫花子，可是还没有能够把他们变成小偷。在这所房子里住着的乌七八糟的穷人当中，有一位善良的老神父，可是他并不属于他们那一伙。国王给了他一点点极微薄的养老金，把他从家里一下子撵了出来；他常爱把孩子们叫到一边，暗自教他们一些正当的行为。安德鲁神父教给汤姆一点拉丁文，并且还教他读书写字；他本想把这些东西也教给那两个姑娘，可是她们害怕朋友们的嘲笑，因为那些人一见她们俩将要有那些稀奇的学问，是绝不会容许的。
整个垃圾大院里乱哄哄的一窝正和康第家里一模一样。酗酒、胡闹和吵嘴在那儿是家常便饭，每天晚上都是如此，而且几乎是通宵达旦。在那一带地方，打破脑袋和饥饿是同样寻常的事情，可是小汤姆并不觉得不愉快。他的日子过得很苦，可是他自己并不知道。他那种生活和垃圾大院所有的孩子们过的是一样的，因此他也就以为那是当然的、舒服的生活。他晚上空手回家的时候，知道他父亲首先就要骂他一顿，再揍他一顿，等他打骂够了之后，祖母又要再来一遍，而且更加厉害；他还知道，到了深夜，他那饿着肚子的母亲就要偷偷地溜到他身边来，把她宁肯自己挨饿、给他省下来的一点半点可怜的面包皮或残屑拿给他吃，虽然她这种大逆不道的行为每每被她的丈夫发觉，并且还要挨他一顿毒打，她也不管。
反正汤姆的生活是过得很顺当的，尤其是在夏天。他只去讨到够他自己活命的东西，因为禁止行乞的法律很严厉，刑罚也很重；所以他把许多时间用来听安德鲁神父讲那些关于巨人和仙女、矮子和妖怪，以及妖魔盘踞城堡，豪华的国王和王子的迷人的古老故事和传说。他脑子里渐渐装满了这些稀奇的事情，于是有许多晚上，当他在黑暗中躺在他那薄薄的、发臭的稻草上，又倦又饿，挨过鞭打之后还在疼痛的时候，他就展开他的想象力，津津有味地给他自己描绘着一座皇宫里的一位娇养的王子那种惬意的生活，因此不久就把他的痛楚都忘记了。后来就有一种愿望日夜在他心中萦绕，那就是要亲眼看见一个真正的王子。
有一次他向那些垃圾大院的玩伴们谈到这桩心事；可是他们非常刻薄地嘲笑他，挖苦他，以致他从此以后情愿把他的梦想留在自己心里。
