《第十六届百花文学奖·小说月报获奖作品集（上下）》：
离开学还有好些天，涂自强决定提前走。他对父母说，咱的钱也不够，在家闲着也是闲着。城里打工的地方多，早去说不定可找个地方干干活儿，多少也挣点读书钱哩。父亲说，娃说的是。闲着是来不了钱的，何况山里活儿钱也难赚。这是涂自强这辈子听到父亲讲的最长的一句话。他有些惊讶。
母亲便说，都随你哩。
涂自强出发那天是个周五。父亲早起看了天，说了一句，今儿天色好出门。屋外的天很亮，两架大山耸着厚背，却也遮挡不住一道道光明。阳光轻松地落在村路上，落得一地灿烂。山坡上的绿原本就深深浅浅，叫这光线一抹，仿佛把绿色照得升腾起来，空气也似透着绿。
母亲坚持让涂自强穿长袖衬衣，嘴上说，山里风凉，到了镇上，天热了，也不要脱，太阳大着，防晒哩。涂自强由着母亲，因为他知道，任他怎么反对，也是没用的。
母亲将一条细长的布带仔细地扎在涂自强的腰上。扎紧了，又特意用手扯了两扯。这是母亲连夜赶着缝起的。布带有一寸宽，双层空心，细密的针脚把布带口封得严严实实。母亲缝完还用手拽了几拽，见没拽散，才放下心。现在，它里面鼓鼓囊囊地塞了东西。母亲努力地让它们变得平展。涂自强知道，那是钱。是他全部的钱。是这些天村里所有涂姓人家凑给他的学费。钱很零碎，村里人家甚至没有大钞供他们一换。母亲说，这个万不可离身，也万不可被人瞧见，更不可丢了，乱花也不可以。村里人都穷，凑这么多是心意。你去学校就得靠它。爹妈帮不到你，我儿你全得自己靠着自己了。
母亲说着，眼睛又流了泪，她依然用衣袖拭眼。
涂自强看到母亲的衣袖处业已黑湿一片，便有些难过。但他还是忍下了。母亲的头发被门外的风吹得翻起，发根深处露出些白。母亲刚满五十岁，却已像个老人。涂自强想，将来定要让爹妈住进城里，定要让他们这辈子享享福才是。
涂自强搭了台拖拉机离开村庄。村子人家并不多，都分散在一个个山坳里。远的过来一趟要跑几十里路。但村里老少差不多全赶来为他送行。路口的银杏树下，稀稀落落地站着他们。鸡狗猪还有小孩子亦都倾巢而出，在大人的腰以下，一派胡窜乱跑。涂自强跳上拖拉机，见整个树下鸡飞狗跳得煞是欢腾，心里竟冒出不舍的念头。
山里静，拖拉机开离了好远，还有声音沿路拐弯托风传来：强伢，要当个大官回来！又有声音说，回来把村里的路修宽点，好走卡车。
涂自强又感动又好笑。拖拉机手是涂自强的小学同学。他读到五年级家里没钱就退了学，现在便跟着镇上的建筑队拉砖拖石头。拖拉机手说，都拿你当英雄哩，指望你学完回来拯救村庄似的。
涂自强便笑，说亏得他们敢想，吓也要吓死我了。
拖拉机手哈哈大笑，说小时候还以为我比你有出息，想不到居然你比我出风头多了。
涂自强说，我不过傻读书罢了，到现在还是你出息呀。这不我蹭你的车来了。涂自强话音一落，拖拉机手又一阵大笑。拖拉机便摇摆得厉害。
翻了一座大山，离村远了。又行了许久，行至山脚拐弯，突然转过一个骑自行车的女孩，拖拉机速度正快，眼见得要撞上。涂自强惊骇地叫喊起来。拖拉机手有点慌乱，遂将拖拉机朝着山壁贴去。
女孩倏一下擦边而过，几乎没有刹车，在涂自强惊魂未定之中，骑远了。拖拉机却失了控，贴着山壁开了十来米，熄火停下。拖拉机手跳下来，看了看拖拉机头，用脚踢了几下，然后朝着涂自强说，我见了女人就倒霉。得找人来修，怕是明天也动不了。
涂自强跳下拖拉机，说我哪能陪你等到明天？拖拉机手说，不能等，就自己赶路去吧。原本说你蹭我的车，让我比你有出息的，现在连这个机会都不给了。
涂自强笑了笑，说等你哪天有了好车，我再蹭。

拖拉机手帮他把行李拿下，又托起放到他背上，然后说，一边走，一边拦车，没准拦到小轿车，比我这个舒服得多。
涂自强懒得跟他贫嘴，背着行李，朝他晃晃手，自己上了路。所谓行李，其实就是一床被子包裹着几件换洗衣衫，再加三两本涂自强喜欢的书。冬衣从初中一直穿到高中，早就烂得不像样子，母亲便说，今年冬天重新缝件新的，到时候寄过去。所以涂自强最厚的衣服就是一件运动衫，行李倒也不重。
