她洗干净条几上的一个小木碗，从锅里盛了半碗粥，又拿一双筷子搅几下木头碗里的粥，慢慢地把粥喂进狗剩的嘴里边，狗剩吸溜一下，就把碗里的粥喝进肚里边。她又拧一块黑窝窝在嘴里嚼碎，再把嘴里碎馍抿在手指上塞进狗剩的嘴里边。狗剩摇着小脑袋，一脸哭相地把嘴里的碎馍吐出来，他吐出的碎馍粘在前襟上边，弯弯曲曲地像一张小地图，他指一指炉台上的窝窝头，看着桂芝，哇哇直叫。桂芝又拧一小块馍塞进他嘴里，他嚼两下就咽进肚子里了。桂芝笑了，她抱起儿子亲了又亲：“俺儿子成精了，知道干净，不吃妈的嘴巴子。”
小狗剩看着妈，他也笑得甜美，吃饱喝足的狗剩坐在轿里哼哼唧唧地唱起歌儿。桂芝把他从轿里抱出来，轻轻拍一下他的圆滚滚的小肚子，喜悦地说：“小肚子吃得像个小西瓜。”小狗剩趔着身，小手指晃晃悠悠地指着木轿。“俺儿还要坐轿轿。”桂芝又把他放进木轿里边，他啪啪啪地拍着轿面。她弯腰吻一下他的脸蛋，走到炉台旁边，掀开锅盖盛了一大碗玉米粥放在方桌上边，看着东厢房对门的西屋叫道：“妈，吃饭吧。”
奶奶颤巍巍地从西屋走进来，她的两只常年流泪的眼睛似睁似闭。她坐在椅子上边，端起桌子上边的粥碗，味同嚼蜡地吃着这顿顿不变样的野菜玉米粥，觉得自己七十多岁的人，快人土了，想吃一碗白面条也没有，不禁满腔的怒火直冲头顶，恨不能把碗里的粥倒在地上。可是她又看见一家人都是吃这种饭——出大力气干重活的儿子杠杠，一年四季在田野忙活的儿媳妇桂芝，两岁的孙子狗剩，还有常年在地里不识闲的老头子都是吃这种饭，自己咋就不能过这种日子哩？
爷爷端着空碗从外边走进来。桂芝说：“爹，我再给你盛一碗粥。”爷爷把碗放在条几上，坐在小马扎上，吸着旱烟管，说：“桂芝，我不饥了，你也吃饭吧。”桂芝盛了一碗粥，站在锅台旁边，一边吃一边说：“爹，您不用愁，咱家虽然添了狗剩这张嘴，他一个娃娃吃不了多少粮食，等到他长大了，吃得多了，他也能劳动挣工分分粮食了。”爷爷又看一看轿里玩耍得很开心的狗剩，爱怜地说：“我在想，屋里没有个小孩子，也怪冷清的。狗剩来了，就热闹了，就是咱家太贫寒了，孩子进咱门里头，跟着咱们破衣烂裤，粗茶淡饭，咱家对不起孩子。”他不禁揉了一下眼睛。桂芝看了他一眼说：“爹，您也不必觉得咱亏欠他啥，有苗不愁长，穷人家的孩子都泼皮，这世上穷人家的孩子太多了，人家能长大，狗剩也能长大。我这当妈的就是拉棍要饭也要把他养大。”爷爷的烟吸得更浓了，小狗剩咳嗽了两声。“爷爷不好，烟味呛着俺孙子啦，爷爷不吸烟了。”爷爷从轿里抱起狗剩，狗剩的两只小手摸着他的胡子笑了。祖孙俩玩了一会儿，爷爷又把他放入轿里，说：“好孙子，你自己在轿里玩，爷爷还得去地里忙。”他说着走出东厢房的屋门。
天上的太阳在厚厚的云层里若隐若现，风雪小了一些。吃饱喝足的狗剩在轿里玩了一会儿，不知不觉趴在轿面上，睡着了。
阴暗的风雪天气，黑夜来得特别早，屋外夜幕降临的时候，东厢房里面已是漆黑一片，伸手不见五指了。桂芝点亮一盏麻油灯，拿起一个小褥子放在床上装有麦秸的草包上边，弯腰把狗剩从木轿里抱出来。她像是对睡得迷迷糊糊的狗剩说，又像是在自言自语：“俺狗儿真乖，吃饱了就睡觉，一点儿也不闹人，咱上床睡觉。轿里多窝屈呀。”她把儿子放在床褥上边，又拿了一条旧被子盖在他身上，搂住儿子，似睡非睡。杠杠推门进屋。他说：“草堆里怪暖和，可是土气味很大，睡一大觉嗓子眼都干了。”他坐在床沿上刚脱鞋，“啪！”肩膀上挨了桂芝一巴掌。她嗔道：“今黑儿你去小间西屋睡。我陪儿子睡。”
杠杠又穿上鞋，满脸不悦地说：“有个儿子，就把男人撵下床，我一个人在西屋睡不着。”桂芝说：“我知道你那毛病，忍两天，等狗儿在咱家习惯了，咱再合床。”杠杠的嘴噘得像个菜包子似的，踢踢踏踏走出东厢房，低着头钻进了简陋窄小的西屋里。桂芝走下床，关紧了东厢房的门，说：“门缝的小溜风就是贼！飕飕响。”她从墙上撕一张旧棉纸，搓成纸条，塞进门缝里。
