她已经上了车，忽然有所觉，又再下车。
车子前左轮似有一堆破布。
巫瞿一向小心，她不想辗过它，也许里边有硬物。
她在后座取过一把伞，把破布拨开。
软绵绵，没有危险。
正想上车，那团脏烂布忽然蠕动一下，发出呜咽之声。
巫瞿毛骨悚然。
什么，是什么？
她急急取出手电筒朝地上照射。
糟糕，仍是一堆软软垃圾，呵不，血渍！而且有结块的毛发，是一只重伤小动物，看不清是何种类，但巫瞿见不是人头，已经松口气。
她匆匆走出路口，刚好有辆警车经过，被她拦截下来。
“警官，请跟我来。”她气急败坏，一额汗，警察不敢怠慢，立刻下车。
跟她到车前，打亮车灯：“这位小姐，是只死猫，蛆虫都长出来。”
“不，它还没死。”
“你的车轮上没有血污，这猫与你无关，你可以把车驶走。”
“猫呢？”
“凌晨清洁工人会处理它，这位小姐，夜深，你一个人不宜在街上久留游荡，回去吧。”
“我——”巫瞿急道。
警员安慰她：“上车，忘记这事。”
颓然上车，警员离去。
她刚要把车驶走，在车灯照耀下，那团血肉模糊的猫尸忽然又扭动了一下。
巫瞿看得很清楚，它还有一口气。
她奋然熄却车匙下车。
这叫做公民行动，当附近没有执行人员协助，市民有权行动缉捕疑犯或类似正义行为。
她抬头看到对街二十四小时营业便利店。巫瞿忽忽奔过去，买双胶手套、一盒面纸、一只空厚纸箱，以及一小罐奶粉。
她回到车边，穿上胶手套，轻轻把纸巾厚厚铺在盒中，伸手去棒起那只小动物。
她双手忽然颤抖。
当然是因为害怕。隔着手套，她不觉它尚有生命迹象。它浑身血污，而且警察观察入微，它身上已长出无数肥大蛆虫蠕动。
巫瞿鼓起勇气把它放入盒内，放到旁边座位，盖好盒子，在电话上找兽医电话。
她得到诊所的电话录音。
“本兽医诊所办公时间由上午八时至下午六时，请明早准时。”
巫瞿一身汗，不知怎样做才好。
她决定把它带回家，稍候几小时。
为什么要那样做，因为，它也是一个生命。
伤重，已不能辨别头与尾，四肢痛苦蜷缩，不懂求救……这与她巫瞿有何分别，只不过，你看不到巫瞿内心伤口。
她把盒子小心翼翼捧回家。
开门入屋，第一件事是调开婴儿奶粉，盛在一只浅碟子内，放入盒里。
这时白色丑陋蛆虫已经散开爬行。
还有得救否，希望缈茫。
巫瞿洗了个澡，捧着盒子再度出门。
她在兽医诊所外等到看护开门。
她下车迎上去。
看护说：“很多人都这样爱护宠物，医生马上到，你先跟我进来。”
巫瞿忽然流泪。
不怕，不怕。
看护打开盒子一看，“啊”，她也吃惊：“怎么会这样，分明是给车子辗过，肠子都露出，已经失救。”
巫瞿垂头。
“这是你的宠物？”
巫瞿摇头：“在街上捡回。”
“原来这样，你不如交给防止虐畜会处理，他们有一百四十年经验，知道怎么做。”
这时却有人推门进来：“给我看看。”医生到。
医生穿上手套，检查动物，“咦，还有一口气，多谢蛆虫帮忙，把毒素吃光，我拿进诊所检查，你等我十分钟。”
年轻男医生，把纸盒取进房间。
巫瞿的心活转，她取出名片及信用卡：“请尽快医治它，不用担心费用。”
看护看看名片：“巫小姐，你真是好心人。”
“那里，我得回公司报到，中午再来。”
“明白。”
巫瞿吁出一口气。
尽了力了。
回到公司，孙仪他们过来道谢。
巫瞿板着面孔：“只此一回。”
赵纤答：“明白，陪酒陪舞没意思。”
四个女子整天不开胃，憔悴不堪，未老先衰。
巫瞿心挂着病猫，匆匆赶回诊所。
看护认得她，迎上：“医生有话说。”
年轻医生只穿着蓝色手术恤与牛仔裤，他看着巫瞿：“你是狗主人？”
“狗？巫瞿一愣，我带来的是猫。”
看护过来，打开毛巾包包，正是那只可怜的小动物，缩成一团，比从前更丑，身体上毛不少部分被剃光缝针。
“是这一只，巫小姐，它不是猫，它是只一岁大雄性约瑟混种犬。”
“送进来之际，尾巴与双耳都被坏人剪掉，又毒哑声线不能吠叫，所以误以为是猫。”
巫瞿紧握双拳，什么样歹毒的人，该把他双耳也切下。
“真令人发指，它被丢到街上，接着，又被车子辗过。”
受骗，丢弃，当作死掉。
“迟十分钟送来已失救，医生把它麻醉，洗净，注射，缝针，除虫。那些可怖蛆虫似黄豆般大小…….可是仍不知能否脱险。它右后腿瘫痪，不能行动，还有什么毛病要等醒转才知。惟一不幸中大幸，经过检查，它双目无恙，可以视物。”
巫瞿凝视那段破毛线似小狗，轻轻问：“活下来了没？”
“有待观察。”
这时医生才轻轻开口：“巫小姐，很高兴你也是爱护动物人士，但小狗即使存活，也五劳七伤，很难享到长寿。受过残酷虐待，它会存有阴影，不易再信任人类，不适宜做宠物，也很难照顾，不如送到防止虐畜会。”
巫瞿看到医生桌上名片，他叫王甲。
“王医生，到了那边，它命运又如何？”
“待康复后待善心人士收养。”
巫瞿毅然答：“我就是那个人，不必辗转，请帮我尽力治好它。”
王医生沉默一会，再轻轻问：“它叫什么名字？”
巫瞿从未养过动物，不禁一怔：“医生你说。”
这时，外边带着宠物看病的一位胖太太大声疾呼：“美元颓到这种地步，唷，欧元又泡汤……”
医生说：“不如叫美元吧。”
“美元？好，美元会升。”
看护露出微笑：“哈，YankeeDollar。”
她伸手抚摸尚未苏醒的小狗。
巫瞿问：“后腿……”
“有一个医治方法。”
“请快说。”
“这是最新治疗，但效果奇佳：把它近肚脐处脂肪切下手掌大小一片，寄往美国某实验所，用最新技术抽出脂肪内干细胞，转为注射剂，再寄回我处，替动物注射医治。”

巫瞿放下心。
她忽然想起问：“王医生，干细胞可用于诸动物，那，人类呢？”
王医生这样答：“这个答案，请巫小姐到互联网医药页上寻查。”
“是，是。”
她到外面柜台结账。
“医生说，这是义务服务。”
“不可以——”
“医生本来也是防虐畜会一分子。”
“至少让我付针药费。”
看护进去一会，出来说：“医生说，那是八百零五元。”

巫瞿离开诊所。

到街上被风一吹，巫瞿冷静下来。
她没有接受劝告，把小狗接手，以后可怎么办？她以后要上班，工作时间非常长，忙的时候，回家沐浴更衣，又再出门，根本没有时间与宠物相处，美元会是寂寞的小犬。
她家里并无养动物道具，像那种心急慌忙、内心忐忑的年轻母亲，什么都没有准备妥当，婴儿快将出世。
她走进宠物店，嚅嚅向服务员讲明来意。
一岁大雄狗，病愈，约一呎长……
店员热心把她带到小犬部，伸手一指：“请便。”
巫瞿在她指示下选择一些必需品。
她叹口气，回到家，躺床上想：这样冲动，想也不想，“我就是那个人，我领养这只伤残小狗”，于是她痛痛快快成为它主人。
巫瞿吃惊：这是怎么了，她并没任何照顾动物的经验，只能边做边学，弄得不好，人与狗都吃苦。
要退缩还来得及。
但这与结婚差不多，要不，勇往直前，捱它二三十年，也就白头偕老，要不，试也不敢试，只得孤独终身。
一个即将生养的年轻孕妇哀哀痛哭，医生问是否怕痛，她回答：“不，我怕还没有准备好做母亲。”医生温柔说：“但是，这事永远准备不好。”
巫瞿不会把美元退回，很少有人会要那样丑陋受伤的动物，它获得领养的机会等于零。
