福楼拜，十九世纪中叶法国伟大的批判现实主义小说家，莫泊桑曾拜他为师。著名作品有《包利夫人》、《情感教育》和《布瓦尔和佩库歇》等。福楼拜对十九世纪末及至二十世纪文学尤其是现代主义文学的发展影响极其深远，被誉为“自然主义文学的鼻祖”和“西方现代小说的奠基者”。

译者简介：

罗国林，1941年生，湖南常宁人，著名翻译家、文学编辑。1965年毕业于北京外国语学院法国语言文学专业。长期从事法国文学研究与翻译，被公认为吉奥诺专家，发表过许多研究文论，译著有二十多种。曾在联合国科教文组织担任过译员和译审，参与创办《法语学习》杂志，对翻译理论也颇有研究，并发表不少译论文章。曾为广东花城出版社编审、副社长、总编辑，中国翻译协会理事，全国外国文学出版研究会副会长，中国法国文学研究会理事，广东省第八届政协委员，广东省作家协会会员，广州市译协常务理事。

我们正上自习，校长进来了，后面跟着一个没穿制服的新生和一个扛一张大课桌的校工。打瞌睡的同学都惊醒了，大家起立，像是正用功被搅扰了似的。
校长做手势让我们坐下，然后转向班主任，低声对他说：
“罗杰先生，我给你带来一个学生，先让他进五年级①，学习和操行都好的话，就按年龄，把他编到高年级吧。”
新生站在门后墙角几乎看不到的地方。这是一个乡下孩子，十五岁左右，个子比我们谁都高。头发顺前额剪齐，像乡村教堂唱诗班的孩子，神情规矩而十分局促不安。他肩膀不算宽，但身上那件绿呢黑纽扣的上衣，抬肩似乎太紧，袖口露出裸惯的红红的手腕子。浅黄色长裤的裤管被背带吊得老高，穿蓝色袜子的小腿露在外头。脚上一双钉了钉子的皮鞋，非常结实，但擦得不亮。
我们开始朗读课文。他聚精会神地听着，连腿也不敢跷起，胳膊肘也不敢支在课桌上，像听布道一样专心。两点钟下课铃响了，班主任不得不提醒他一声，他才随同我们走出教室。
我们有个习惯，一进教室，就把帽子扔在地上，腾空了手好做功课。做法是一到门口，就把帽子扔出去，穿过凳子底下，一直飞到墙根，扬起一片灰尘。这是我们的拿手好戏。
但这新生不知是没有注意到这做法，还是不敢照着做，祷告完了，他仍然把帽子放在膝盖上。他那顶帽子可是颇有特色，既像熊皮帽、骑兵盔，又像圆筒帽、水獭皮鸭舌帽和棉布睡帽，总之不三不四，十分寒碜，它那不声不响的难看样子，活像一个表情莫名其妙的傻子的脸。它呈椭圆形，里面用鲸鱼骨支撑；帽口有三道环状滚边，往上是由丝绒和兔子皮镶成的菱形方块，彼此交错，中间有红道隔开；再往上，是口袋似的帽筒和硬纸板剪成的多角形帽顶；帽顶蒙着一块图案复杂的彩绣，中间垂下一根过分细的长带子，末梢吊着一个结成十字形花纹的金线坠子。那顶帽子倒是崭新的，帽檐闪闪发光。
“站起来。”老师叫道。
新生站起来，帽子掉了，全班笑开了。
他俯身去捡帽子，邻座的同学用胳膊肘把它捅到地上。他再次弯腰才捡起来。
“放下你的战盔吧。”风趣的老师说道。
同学们哄堂大笑，窘得这可怜的孩子不知道该把帽子拿在手里，扔到地上，还是戴在头上好。他又坐下，双手放在膝盖上。
“站起来，”老师又说，“告诉我你叫什么名字。”
新生结结巴巴，说出一个听不清楚的名字。
“再说一遍。”
他吞吞吐吐又说一遍，引得全班哗笑，还是一个字母也听不清。
“大声点儿！”老师喊道，“大声点儿！”
于是，新生下了最大决心，口张得大大的，像喊人似的，扯开嗓门，嚷出这样几个字：“夏包法里”。
整个课堂哄的一声吵嚷开了，越闹越凶，夹杂着尖叫（有人乱吼，有入学狗叫，有人跺脚，有人重复：“夏包法里！夏包法里！”）。吵嚷好一阵子，才变成零星的嘘叫，好不容易平静下来。但间忽，一排学生之中，还有人禁不住笑出声，就像没有燃尽的鞭炮，东一声西一声响起来。老师一再威胁要重罚作业，课堂秩序才渐渐恢复。他让新生拼音，一个字母一个字母念，再连起来重说一遍，才弄明白他的名字是夏尔·包法利，立刻命令这可怜虫坐到讲台前面那条懒学生坐的板凳上。新生站起来，离开自己的座位，但又显得犹豫不决。
“你找什么？”老师问道。
“我的帽……”新生怯生生地说，不安地四下张望。

古今中外，多少真正伟大的文学艺术作品，一经问世，即遭到无情的非难、攻击、批判，甚至查禁、焚毁，后来仅仅凭仗历史的公正，才最终获得其应有的地位，成为人类共享的文化艺术宝库中的瑰宝，彪炳千古。居斯塔夫·福楼拜的传世之作《包法利夫人》的遭遇，就是典型的一例。
福楼拜动手写《包法利夫人》，是1851年9月19日在卢昂近郊的克罗瓦塞别墅。经过将近五年呕心沥血的创作，直到1856年5月才完稿。但誊写入誊得一塌糊涂，他又不得不仔细校正，至5月31日，才寄给《巴黎杂志》他的朋友杜康。《巴黎杂志》是一家半月刊，将手稿搁置了三个月，才决定从10月1日至12月15日，分六期连载《包法利夫人》。但该刊审读委员会致函福楼拜，认为他的小说需要删节，请他把删节的全权交给编辑部。福楼拜未予理睬，仅在来函背面写了“荒谬透顶”四个字。从10月1日至11月15日发表的几部分，倒是未作删节。及至12月1日那一期准备付印之时，编辑部一位负责人对出租马车里发生的场面（即莱昂与爱玛从卢昂大教堂里出来后，乘出租马车疯跑全城那一段），忽然感到担心，说：“这一段不合适，我们还是把它去掉吧。”福楼拜对此十分气愤，但为了不使编辑部为难，便说：“你们要删节，悉听尊便，但你们必须说明你们作了删节。”于是，编辑部加了一条脚注：“审读委员会认为有必要删去此处的一段，因为它不符合本刊的编辑方针。特此说明。”事情并未到此止步，接着12月15日那一期，编辑部又决定删去几处。福楼拜确实恼怒了，经交涉，在小说正文底下刊出他的抗议：“《巴黎杂志》出于我不赞同的某些考虑，在12月1日那一期里已删去了一段。在编辑这一期时，他们又顾虑重重，认为必须删去好几处。因此，我声明对后面发表的部分不负责任，读者看到的仅是片断，不是整体。”
《包法利夫人》一发表，立刻在文学界和读者中引起了轰动。当时负责严密检查所有出版物的帝国检察署，看到这部轰动性小说，《巴黎杂志》在发表时竟“顾虑重重”，多次删节，该刊审读委员会还特地声明，所删去的部分“不符合本刊的编辑方针”。这还了得！检察署高度警觉起来，对陆续发表的每一部分仔细研究，很快决定对这本书的作者福楼拜以及《巴黎杂志》发行经理洛朗比沙和印刷商比耶提出公诉。福楼拜等很快收到传票，审判于1857年1月31日开始。负责宣读公诉状的是代理检察长埃内斯特·皮纳尔。此人是帝国政府豢养的一条鹰犬，后来出任内政大臣。
