Author Description

卓伊·海勒（ZōeHeller），1965年生于伦敦。记者、作家。作品散见于《星期B独立报》、《星期日泰晤士报》、《名利场》、《纽约客》、《泰晤士报文学增刊》等。2002年因《每B电讯报》的专栏获得英国“年度专栏作家”奖。2003年小说《丑闻笔记》进入英国小说的最高奖项——布克奖决选名单。目前她和两个女儿一起生活在纽约。

第一次看到希芭是一九九六年冬季的那学期，一个星期一的大清早，我站在圣乔治停车场，正把书从车后座拿出来。她骑着脚踏车穿过大门进来——那种前面有个篮子可以放东西的旧式脚踏车。她的头发刻意梳成看似蓬乱的发髻：许多散落的发丝垂在下颚两侧，后面有根像筷子一样的东西穿过松松的发髻，那种女明星饰演性感女医生时所梳的发型。记不得她当时到底穿什么衣服，她的服装通常很复杂——多层次衣袂飘飘的那种。我知道她穿紫色的鞋子，而且肯定还穿了条长裙，因为我记得当时曾想到，那条裙子可能会缠在脚踏车轮的辐条里。她下车时——以一种柔软、相当不端庄的姿势跳下来——我看到裙子的布料是透明的，脑际浮起“作怪”两个字。我思忖着：爱作怪的人。随即锁上车门走开。
当天稍后我们正式照了面，午休时副校长泰德·莫森带她来教员办公室和大家会面。午休时间实在不是跟老师们晤面的好时段，若要画一张教师授课日情绪表，午休时段定是落在谷底。办公室的空气沉重滞闷，大清早唧唧喳喳、言不及义的谈话已经沉寂下来，没在忙东忙西、查对时间表的老师，都一言不发、闷闷不乐地半趴半坐着。（说得更实在些，这种坐姿除了反映出办公室那三张年迈的泡沫乳胶沙发的粗制滥造外，也反映出老师们士气低落的模样。）有人垮着肩膀望着前面发呆，有人在看书报——看的多是些自由派报纸的文艺版和传媒版，或是平装的通俗小说——书报的内容并非重点，只是个挡箭牌，借此不必跟同事们说话。一条条的巧克力和塑料碗装的速食面都进了五脏庙。
希芭来的那天，由于旧馆的暖气故障，教员休息室比往常稍微拥挤些。（圣乔治校址除了三幢现代建筑——体育馆、艺术中心和科学馆——外，还有旧馆和中堂。学校的前身是一所维多利亚式的孤儿院，这两栋相当老朽的红砖建筑，可以追溯到那个年代。）那天下午，原本在午休时刻大可窝在旧馆教室的几位老师，因为教员休息室的暖气还管用，都来避难了。
莫森带希芭进来时，我正在远处的角落，因此有好几分钟的时间可以看着他们一路缓缓前进，再挤出一脸合宜的笑容。
希芭的头发经过一个早上变得更乱了，松散的发丝变成一绺绺的，原本应该平滑拢向后面的部分，冒出了树枝状毛茸茸的小发丝，整个头部好像罩在一个光环里。现在我才发现她非常瘦，弯下来跟坐着的老师握手时，身体像一张纸似的，在腰部折成两半。
莫森和希芭走向教英国文学的女老师安东妮亚·罗宾森时，莫森以他平素冷漠的好心情大声说：“这是我们新来的陶艺老师！”希芭微笑着轻抚头发。
