Author Description

威廉·特雷弗，爱尔兰当代文学大师，被《纽约客》称为“当代英语世界最伟大的短篇小说家”。他于1928年生于爱尔兰科克郡米切尔斯敦一个中产阶级新教家庭，在外省度过了童年时代，后到都柏林大学圣三一学院历史系求学。他先后做过雕塑家、教师、广告公司文案。从1954年起，他和妻子移居英国。
自1958年出版第一部长篇小说《行为标准》以来，威廉·特雷弗已创作近二十部中长篇小说、数百部短篇小说，还著有多部戏剧剧本、童书及散文集。他先后三次获得英国惠特布雷德图书奖，五次入围布克奖。2002年，英国女王伊丽莎白二世授予他骑士爵位。2008年，他获得爱尔兰图书奖终身成就奖。

在斯奇勒家的台阶上，褐色的前门两旁是彩色玻璃，西德尼脱掉塑料雨衣，抖掉上面的雨水。他径自走进小小的门厅，顿了顿，用一条手帕擦去脸上的雨水，摁响里屋的门铃。他们愿意这样，西德尼有钥匙进入门厅，然后摁门铃宣告他的光临。如此他们便知道来者是谁：除他之外，没有人会摁响里屋的门铃。
“下午好，西德尼。”插销拔开，钥匙在单栓锁里转动，薇拉问候道，“还在下雨吗，西德尼？”
“是啊，越下越大了。”
“我们没往外看。”
厅里的灯亮着，除了大夏天，总是如此。
西德尼等着插销落回原处，钥匙在单栓锁里转动，然后把透明塑料雨衣挂在厅里的木钉上。
“那个，浴室嘛，”薇拉说，“都准备好了。”

西德尼知道老人说得对。确实应该先换瓷砖、填橡胶的，不然会搞得一团糟。一般都是那么做的。西德尼不是个行家，也没有装修过多少浴室，但觉得老爷子说得有道理。
“没关系，斯奇勒先生。瓷砖没多少，只需要换两三块。”
他想趁木结构上的底层涂料没干的时候，把新瓷砖塞进去。割掉多余的填料，再挤一些上去，这活儿不好把握，他不喜欢。以前只干过一次，是厨房的洗涤池后面。他搞定之后再去给木结构上釉。
