这件事发生在五月的第一个礼拜，我只好去检修检修。我是个揽私活的独立承包商，名字没列在政府薪水发放单上。不知道你们明不明白，现在时代不同了。在万恶的旧时代，许多囚犯服满刑期后仍然从事监狱里干的老本行，为政府干活，高高兴兴地从政府手里领薪水。可我不一样，我生来就是自由人。
自由人和囚犯，这其中区别大了。我有一个爷爷因为持械伤人、无业，被人家从乔堡发配到月球。另一个爷爷则因为“湿鞭炮之战”以后从事破坏活动而被流放。外婆自称是因为嫁给外公才到这里的，但我看过档案，她是和平队队员(被迫加入的)。你猜得没错，就是女性少年犯。她的婚姻是早期的宗族婚姻(斯通族)，与另外一个女人一起共同拥有六个丈夫。因此，谁是我的外公存疑至今。不过这种事也很平常。对她替我挑的外公，我也没什么可抱怨的。我的另一个外婆出生在撒马尔罕附近，是鞑靼人，被判处在集中营接受“再教育”，后来“自愿”留在了月球。
我的老爹说，我们家族的“辉煌”历史可以追溯到更久以前。我们有一个女祖先因为巫术在莎勒姆被吊死，一个曾曾曾曾祖父因为抢劫被处以车裂，还有一个女祖先是第一批被送到博坦尼海湾的流放者之一。
我以我的血统为荣，所以尽管我为监守长官做事，但我绝对不会成为他的手下。从迈克到这里的第一天起，一直都是我在伺候他。也许在别人看来，这跟做监守长官的手下没什么区别。但对我自己而言，区别太大了！我可以随时把手里的工具一扔，告诉他们见鬼去。
除此之外，独立承包商的收入比较高，比官方付给公务员的薪水高出很多。这里的电脑技师少得可怜。只要去了地球，有几个月球人能身体健康地待在医院外头？更别说在那边的电脑学校修完全部课程了。
我只知道一个——那就是我！我在地球接受了两次培训。一次三个月，另一次四个月。不过，去地球得接受近乎苛刻的训练：在离心机里做运动，睡觉时也得负重。最后，到了地球还得时时小心，走路要慢，不能爬楼梯，不能做任何加重心脏负担的事情。女人——想都别去想，在那个重力场，不想女人倒也不是什么难事。
多数月球人压根儿没想过离开这块大石头——只要在月球待上几个礼拜，离开它就会有生命危险。当年被派来组装迈克的电脑技师签的都是短期的高薪合同，他们必须在生理出现危险变化之前完成工作，不然就得永远留在这四十万公里以外的异乡了。
尽管受过两次培训，我也不算什么顶级电脑技师——吃不消高等数学。也算不上真正的电子工程师、物理学家。或许也不是月球上最好的微型机械技师，更别提什么电脑心理学家了。
但把这些领域综合到一起，我就算个大行家了，懂的比每个单独专业的专家更多——我是个通才。我可以临时顶替随便哪个工头，照样接下源源不断交给我的订单；也可以在野外现场修补你的增压服，准保让你来得及在停止呼吸之前赶回气密舱。机器跟我处得来，而且我还有一件专家们没有的东西——我的左臂。
你瞧，其实我没有左臂，肘部以下全没了。所以我有一打假肢，每一只都有专门的用途，还有一只假肢看上去摸上去都跟真的一模一样。我的三号手上有一个微型操作器，精密程度不亚于神经外科医生用的那种。用这只手臂，再加上一个立体高倍放大镜，我可以完成一些精密度要求很高的修理工作。这样，很多部件就不必拆下来送到地球那边的工厂去修理了。
所以他们才会请我，让我看看迈克干吗要把一亿亿政府代金券随便送给别人，并赶在他再送出个十万八千之前修好他。
他们给的报酬是计时工资外加奖金，我接了这个活儿。一般来说，这应该是线路的问题，但我并没有去检查线路。我进了机房，关上门，放下工具，坐了下来，“你好，迈克。”
“你好。”他的灯朝我眨巴着。

“停！”我叫道，“删除。从头开始。”我怎么这么傻，竟会问他这么宽泛的问题。如果不打断他，他会把大英百科全书从头到尾、从尾到头地读上几遍，完了之后还会一一读遍月球上每一《世界科幻大师丛书：严厉的月亮》。以前他只能阅读微缩胶片，但自从2074年装了一个带吸盘、有翻页功能的扫描仪后，他就什么都能看了。
“不是你问我懂什么的吗？”二进制读出器的闪光灯一排排闪烁着，闪光起伏不断——他正在无声地笑。迈克有语音合成器，所以还是能笑出声音的，不过那声音很恐怖。那种笑声他一般都备而不用，只有在发生一些真正好玩的事情时才“偶露峥嵘”，譬如宇宙大灾难什么的。
“我应该这么说，”我继续说道，“‘你最近新知道了些什么？’。别念今天的报纸！我刚才那么问，一层意思是跟你打招呼，以示友好；另一层意思是请你告诉我一些你觉得我会感兴趣的事。不然我的话就是程序里所谓的空循环了。”
