Content Description

《最后一课》就是小场景表现大主题的一个典型范例。在普法战争中，法国惨败，东部的阿尔萨斯和洛林两省，随即沦为异族的统治。这种悲剧所激发的两省人民的爱国情绪，既不是以大抗议大示威高呼口号怒吼出来的，也不是枪对枪炮对炮用枪炮声所宣告的，而是通过小学校的一堂法文课来表达的。
一堂法文课再普通不过，但这是最后一课。小学教师阿梅尔是再普通不过的教师，小学生弗朗兹是再普通不过的学童，欧译尔老爷爷也是再普通不过的文盲村民，等等，这些极普通的人在极普通的小学校上最后一堂法文课，就极不普通了。只因这些普通的自然感情聚在一起，生发出来一种伟大而高尚的情感——爱国精神。
文学作品表现爱国精神，大多是激昂的：在祖国的危难关头，血性男儿抛头颅洒热血，为国捐躯，何等激昂壮烈！

嘿！还真没有料到。阿梅尔先生注视着我，并没有生气，而是非常和蔼地对我说：
“到你座位上去吧，我的小弗朗兹；我们不等你就要上课了。”
我立刻跨上坐椅，坐到自己的座位上；这时我才惊魂稍定，注意到我们老师穿着他那件漂亮的绿礼服，领口套着精美的襟饰，还戴上那顶绣花黑绸小圆帽，而只有在学校来人视察或发奖时，他才是这套打扮。此外，整个课堂也显得异乎寻常，有点儿庄严肃穆。我最惊讶的是，看到教室后面那排平时空着的坐椅，竟然坐着和我们一样安静的村民，有头戴三角帽的欧译尔老爷爷、前任村长、退休的邮递员，还有其他一些人。他们表情都很忧伤。欧译尔老爷爷还带来毛了边的旧识字课本，摊在膝上，他那副大眼镜则横放在上面。
我对周围这一切正惊讶不已，阿梅尔先生已经上了讲台，他对我们讲话，还是刚才见我时的那种和蔼而严肃的声音：
“我的孩子们，这是我最后一次给你们上课了。柏林方面来了命令，阿尔萨斯和洛林①的学校，只准教德语了……新老师明天就来。今天，这是你们最后一堂法语课，请你们注意听讲。”
这几句话一下子把我的心搅乱了。哼！这些坏蛋，他们在村政府张贴的布告，原来就是这个消息。
我的最后一堂法语课！……
我还不怎么会写字呢！以后再也学不到啦！学这点儿就算完啦！……现在，我真怨自己白浪费了时间，怨自己逃学去掏鸟窝，去萨尔河溜冰！我的课本，刚才背在身上还特别讨厌，还嫌太沉，现在反而觉得，我的语法课本、神圣的历史课本，就跟老朋友似的，要离开心里还真难受。阿梅尔先生也一样。一想到他要离去，再也见不到了，我就把受到的惩罚、挨的戒尺打忘得精光。
可怜的人！
他换上节日的盛装，就是要郑重地上完最后一堂课；现在我也明白了，为什么村里这些老人都坐到教室后面。这似乎表明他们后悔没有常来听课，同时以这种方式感谢我们老师四十年的杰出工作，并向离去的祖国表示敬意。
我正想到这里，忽听叫我的名字。该我背诵了。这些分词的重要规则，我若是能够高声地、清晰地、一点儿不差全背诵出来，付出什么代价我还能不肯呢？可是，我刚说一两个词就乱套了，站在座位上摇晃着身子，不敢抬头，心里难受极了。我又听见阿梅尔先生对我说：
“我不责备你，我的小弗朗兹，你一定受到足够的惩罚了……事情就是这样。我们每天都这样想：‘算了吧！时间多着呢……明天我再学吧。’这不，你看到了发生什么情况……我们的阿尔萨斯最大的不幸，就是总把教育推到明天，现在，那些人就有权对我们说：‘怎么！你们还敢说自己是法国人，你们连自己的语言都看不懂，也不会写！’我可怜的弗朗兹，我所说的这些，罪过最大的还不是你。我们所有人都应当大大地责备自己。
“你们父母没有很好地督促你们学习。他们还是愿意打发你们下地，或者到纱厂去干活，好挣几个钱。我本人呢，就一点儿也没有该自责的吗？我不也是时常让你们给我的花园浇水，耽误你们学习吗？我要去钓鳟鱼的时候，不是也随便放你们假吗？……”
阿梅尔先生从一件事谈到另一件事，又开始给我们讲解法语，他说，这是世界土最优美、最清晰、最过硬的语言，必须在我们中间保存下去，永远也不要遗忘。要知道，一个民族沦为奴隶，只要牢牢掌握自己的语言，就等于掌握打开监狱的钥匙……接着，他拿起一本语法书，给我们朗读课文。我真奇怪，发现自己一听就明白，觉得他讲的一切很容易，很容易理解。我也认为自己从来没有这样用心听讲，他也从来没有这样耐心讲解过。这个可怜的人，就好像在离开之前，要把他的全部知识教给我们，要一下子全灌输到我们的脑子里。
