荣春天从他参加越战的前一天说起。

那一天他还在县城去边境的路上。盖着厚厚帐篷的军车里坐满了乳臭未干的兵。一路上尘土飞扬，军车一眼望不到尽头。他们唱着雄壮的歌，兴奋得像去迎接新娘。但当给每人发枪的时候，歌声突然停止了。这是他们第一次摸到枪。荣春天说，枪是冰凉的，像蛇一样。军车上有一个老兵，教他们怎么上膛，怎么瞄准，怎么扣动扳机，怎样上刺刀……有新兵手忙脚乱的，折腾老半天也弄不清楚怎么上膛。还有新兵抓着枪真像抓着一条蛇似的，罗嗦着不敢松手。荣春天问老兵，能不能发我一发子弹，把空中的鸟打下来？老兵说，不成，你们的第一颗子弹一定要打到越南人的身上。道路洼洼沆沆，军车跑跑停停。老兵给每一个新兵发放笔和纸，让他们写决心书。不是“写”，而是照着老兵说的“抄”。荣春天的字很工整漂亮，一直都很工整漂亮，成为他的车厢里的范文，给那些不识字的人照抄。想不到，车厢里竟然有一半以上的新兵不认识字，甚至连自己的名字也写不全。老兵不断斥责他们不好好念书整天去操牛逼了吗？他们抄写决心书非常认真，生怕抄不好被赶下车，从此当不上兵了。但他们过于认真，把落款的名字照抄了，又惹来了一顿臭骂。骂过以后，老兵的态度忽然变得和气亲切，跟新兵们称兄道弟，问每一个新兵是否有了女朋友，有没有上过床，他们都很害羞，没有谁说有。老兵又问，心里有什么疑惑需要解答？有人问，新兵连是不是有三个月的训练期和有适应期？老兵回答说，当你们成为解放军的第一天开始，就随时准备着英勇杀敌、保家卫国，战争没有适应期，战场是最好的训练基地，一仗打下来，什么都懂了。又有人问，我们不是预备队的吗？老兵回答说，预备队就是战斗队，随时准备战斗。还有人问，原来我听说我们只是负责后勤，不用上战场……老兵说，后勤比前线更危险。

荣春天首先察觉到了有什么不对，闻到了死亡的气味。新兵蛋的脸上都布满了恐惧和紧张的神色，甚至有人尿裤子了。荣春天心里明白战争不是打架斗殴，不是赛跑，不是与台风较量，是真枪实弹，是尸横遍野。他开始动摇了，甚至琢磨着要不要逃跑。临近边境，军车在夜色中停下，有军官来认领新兵。荣春天被带到另一辆军车，继续前进。车厢里有饭，有酒，有烟，可以随便吃喝抽。荣春天吃撑了。但一进入颠簸的山路，他把肚子里的东西全吐了，就差肠子没有吐出来。到了后半夜，迷迷糊糊中，荣春天听到了清晰的枪声、炮声。他一下子就清醒了。有人告诉他，准备上战场了。

而前天中午，他们刚刚在县武装部集中，参加新兵边的操练。在队列中，荣春天看见围栏外站满了脸上写满自豪感的家长，从人头攒动中，他认出了荣耀——极力鼓励他参军的人。他比任何人都兴奋、激动。荣春天没有在众人面前给他丢脸，他做的每一个动作都符合要求，被教官三次安排给大伙做示范。那时候，在我们几个当中，荣春天是最听话的、最老实的。荣耀回到蛋镇宣布，荣春天一入伍就被任命为班长了。实际上，荣春天是在半个月后才被任命为班长。他所在的班在短短十五天里已经先后死了三任班长。他当上班长后，他的班只剩下他和另一个叫小伍的士兵了，他们奉命驻守一个无名高地，必须坚持两天，直到援兵赶到。小伍是柳州人，作战很勇敢，荣春天也很勇敢。他们两个人火线上结成兄弟，誓同生死。荣春天和小伍坚持了一天半，打退了越南人的一次又一次的进攻，可是不见援兵的踪影。荣春天知道，有时候上头说是有援兵，但未必就有，说援兵一天内到，也可能三天后才能赶到。他们都负伤了，好在都是皮肉伤。到了那天黄昏，敌人停止了进攻。荣春天纳闷了，越南人为什么不进攻了呢？如果越南人再进攻，他们便坚持不住了，精疲力竭不说，主要是那挺机枪卡壳了，死活修不好。没有机枪，靠两支步枪守什么阵地呀？再说机枪的弹药也没有了。步枪子弹也没有剩下几颗。好在，越南人不知道这种情况。他们停止了进攻。荣春天和小伍松了一口气。一松气，神经一放松，就知道自己又累又困，他们背靠着背，说好了谁都不许睡着，但他们话没说完就睡着了。说睡着也不算睡着，小伍只是打了一个盹。就一个盹，他便惊醒了，猛烈地叫醒荣春天：“快逃，越南人要炮轰我们了！”荣春天一骨碌爬起来：“怎么可能？要炮轰早就炮轰了。他们的炮也没有炮弹了。”小伍说，刚才我做了一个梦，听到我父亲大声呼喊越南人要炮轰了，赶紧逃命。小伍是家里的独子，他的父亲在小伍入伍前一年便去世了。荣春天不相信小伍的话。小伍说刚才他父亲对着他又喊又拽，催促赶紧逃命！荣春天说，那是幻觉。小伍坚持说是“报梦”，是死人与活人的对话。荣春天不相信，说这是封建迷信，是为当逃兵找借口，你要逃便逃吧，没有命令我不能撤，我不能当逃兵。小伍催促他还是躲避一下，“通灵”的事情在他家乡经常发生，不可不信。荣春天说，我们保住了阵地，眼看就能立功授勋了，我们这一擅自撤退就是临阵脱逃，之前所有的努力都白费了。小伍说，死到临头，还想着立功！要拖荣春天一起逃命，但荣春天死活不从。小伍气急败坏，要拖荣春天逃离。荣春天一枪托打在小伍的的额头上：“你要当逃兵我不拦你，我要立功你也不能拦我！”小伍额头被打破，跺跺脚，骂了一声狗娘养的，哭着跑了。小伍刚跑到阵地的背后，一颗炮弹就落下来，把荣春天炸飞了，好一会才从半空中落下来。小伍躲过了一劫，跑回来把昏死过去的荣春天拖到一个安全的地方，又一颗炮弹落下来，将他们的掩体炸平了。接着，炮弹一颗接着一颗，爆炸声震耳欲聋，小伍和荣春天躲在不远处，被炮弹掀起来的泥土掩埋了。
