《大淖记事》：
由轮船公司往东往西，各距一箭之遥，有两丛住户人家。这两丛人家，也是互不相同的，各是各乡风。
西边是几排错错落落的低矮的瓦屋。这里住的是做小生意的。他们大都不是本地人，是从下河一带，兴化、泰州、东台等处来的客户。卖紫萝卜的（紫萝卜是比荸荠略大的扁圆形的萝卜，外皮染成深蓝紫色，极甜脆），卖风菱的（风菱是很大的两角的菱角，壳极硬）·卖山里红的，卖熟藕（藕孔里塞了糯米煮熟）的。还有一个从宝应来的卖眼镜的，一个从杭州来的卖天竺筷的。他们像一些候鸟，来去都有定时。来时，向相熟的人家租一间半间屋子，住上一阵，有的住得长一些，有的短一些，到生意做完，就走了。他们都是日出而作，日入而息。吃罢早饭，各自背着、扛着、挎着、举着自己的货色，用不同的乡音，不同的腔调，吟唱吆唤着上街了。到太阳落山，又都像鸟似的回到自己的窝里。于是从这些低矮的屋檐下就都飘出带点甜味而又呛人的炊烟（所烧的柴草都是半干不湿的）。他们做的都是小本生意，赚钱不大。因为是在客边，对人很和气，凡事忍让，所以这一带平常总是安安静静的，很少有吵嘴打架的事情发生。
这里还住着二十来个锡匠，都是兴化帮。这地方兴用锡器，家家都有几件锡制的家伙。香炉、蜡台、痰盂、茶叶罐、水壶、茶壶、酒壶，甚至尿壶，都是锡的。嫁闺女时都要陪送一套锡器。最少也要有两个能容四五升米的大锡罐，摆在柜顶上，否则就不成其为嫁妆。出阁的闺女生了孩子，娘家要送两大罐糯米粥（另外还要有两只老母鸡，一百只鸡蛋），装粥用的就是娘家柜顶上的这两个锡罐。因此，二十来个锡匠并不显多。
锡匠的手艺不算费事，所用的家什也较简单。一副锡匠担子，一头是风箱，绳系里夹着几块锡板；一头是炭炉和两块二尺见方，一面裱着好几层表芯纸的方砖。锡器是打出来的，不是铸出来的。人家叫锡匠来打锡器，一般都是自己备料——把几件残旧的锡器回炉重打。锡匠在人家门道里或是街边空地上，支起担子，拉动风箱，在锅里把旧锡化成锡水——锡的熔点很低，不大一会就化了；然后把两块方砖对合着（裱纸的一面朝里），在两砖之间压一条绳子，绳子按照要打的锡器圈成近似的形状，绳头留在砖外，把锡水由绳口倾倒过去，两砖一压，就成了锡片；然后，用一个大剪子剪剪，焊好接口，用一个木槌在铁砧上敲敲打打，大约一两顿饭工夫就成型了。锡是软的，打锡器不像打铜器那样费劲，也不那样吵人。粗使的锡器，就这样就能交活。若是细巧的，就还要用刮刀刮一遍，用砂纸打一打，用竹节草（这种草中药店有卖的）磨得锃亮。
这一帮锡匠很讲义气。他们扶持疾病，互通有无，从不抢生意。若是合伙做活，工钱也分得很公道。
这帮锡匠有一个头领，是个老锡匠，他说话没有人不听。老锡匠人很耿直，对其余的锡匠（不是他的晚辈就是他的徒弟）管教得很紧。他不许他们赌钱喝酒；嘱咐他们出外做活，要童叟无欺，手脚要干净；不许和妇道嬉皮笑脸。他教他们不要怕事，也绝不要惹事。除了上市应活，平常不让到处闲游乱窜。
老锡匠会打拳，别的锡匠也跟着练武。他屋里有好些白蜡杆，三节棍，没事便搬到外面场地上打对儿。老锡匠说：这是消遣，也可以防身，出门在外，会几手拳脚不吃亏。除此之外，锡匠们的娱乐便是唱唱戏。他们唱的这种戏叫作‘‘小开口”，是一种地方小戏，唱腔本是萨满教的香火（巫师）请神唱的调子，所以又叫“香火戏”。这些锡匠并不信萨满教，但大都会唱香火戏。戏的曲调虽简单，内容却是成本大套，李三娘挑水推磨，生下咬脐郎；白娘子水漫金山；刘金定招亲；方卿唱道情……可以坐唱，也可以化了妆彩唱。遇到阴天下雨，不能出街，他们能吹打弹唱一整天。附近的姑娘媳妇都挤过来看，——听。
老锡匠有个徒弟，也是他的侄儿，在家大排行第十一，小名就叫个十一子，外人都叫他小锡匠。这十一子是老锡匠的一件心事。因为他太聪明，长得又太好看了，他长得挺拔厮称，肩宽腰细，唇红齿白，浓眉大眼，头戴遮阳草帽，青鞋净袜，全身衣服整齐合体。天热的时候，敞开衣扣，露出扇面也似的胸脯，五寸宽的雪白的板带煞得很紧。走起路来，高抬脚，轻着地，麻溜利索。锡匠里出了这样一个一表人才，真是鸡窝里飞出了金凤凰。老锡匠心里明白：唱“小开口”的时候，那些挤过来的姑娘媳妇，其实都是来看这位十一郎的。
