《家守绮谭》以明治时代为背景，由绵贯征四郎的二十多篇短小的札记组成，每一篇都以花草命名，如：百日红、忘都草、子午莲、野菰、沿阶草、南天竹、大丽花……每一篇都充满奇趣，像人生的不经意的相遇。

Author Description

梨木香步，一九五九年出生于鹿儿岛县，曾留学英国。一九九四年发表《西女巫之死》，获第二十八届日本儿童文学协会新人奖、第四十四届小学馆文学奖；已于二〇〇八年改编成电影。一九九六年发表《后园》，获第一届儿童文学奇幻大奖第一名。二〇〇四年发表《家守绮谭》二〇〇五年改编成NHK-FM广播剧。二〇〇三年发表《沼地森林》获Senseof Gender奖、二〇〇六年第十六届紫式部文学奖。二〇一〇年《过河的足迹》获二〇一〇年度读文学随笔/纪行分类奖。

田肖霞，毕业于上海外国语大学。泽有《多田便利屋》等作品，并以“默二”笔名撰写与日本文学有关的闲散评论。

子午莲（未草）
我在游廊钓鱼。香鱼有时从湖泊经过水渠而来。运气好的时候能钓到鳗鱼。这阵子的早上，有白鹭在院子里一动不动地伺机捉鱼。有意思，是从上空看准这个池塘落下来的吧，这样想着，我偶然看向挂轴，应该在其中的白鹭杳无影踪。我在心里“咦”了一声，重新看向池塘，转瞬之前确实在那儿的白鹭也不见了。也有这样的怪事啊。我想着，又看向挂轴，白鹭已经回去了，并装出一副若无其事的表情。真是半点都大意不得。
池塘中如今盛开着小朵的睡莲。据说名叫“未草”①。这名字很恰当，一到未时，就规规矩矩地绽放花朵。这水草最近常发出“咳咳咳”的扰攘叫声。如果是羊，该以别的调门叫唤才对。百日红似乎不太喜欢这草。未草一开花，她就仿佛不胜厌烦地把树干背过去。我和她说过我讨厌争执，所以至今没发生什么大的问题。
起初，五郎一听见未草叫唤就惊跳起来，如今它已经习惯了，连午睡的眼睛也不张一下。说起五郎，自从养了它，邻家太太每天过来一次，送来些冷饭酱汤之类，说是她家余下的。既是给狗吃的，全部弄作一堆盛来便好，却是特意装在不同的器皿里拿来的。她大概隐约知道我一起受了款待。真是格外用心的邻居。所以，她这岂止是喂五郎，明明是填我的肚子。不仅如此，五郎还成了看家狗。前不久，它吠得厉害，我便走到院子查看究竟，发现有只蜈蚣正在竹篱上扬起上半身恐吓五郎。两者都不肯退让一步，呈对峙之势。白鹭大约也是在那时乘隙溜出来捉鱼吧。如此一来，或许是全靠这只狗，这个家的风纪才好歹保持和谐。不愧是高堂居中游说而留在这个家的狗。
这个家的玄关顶上有个储物间，从厨房往上搭着一架梯子。前几天，我爬上去找蚊帐，在那里发现了一枚风铃，便把它挂在檐下。午睡时分，好风吹过，正适合半梦半醒，风铃仿佛迟疑着发出“叮——”的一声响，真是风雅之物。然而不知为何，风铃一旦作响，未草必定“咳咳咳”地叫起来，仿佛在嘲笑一般。无奈之下，我终于把风铃给解了下来。
写作缓慢，毫无进展。我从五郎这儿得了不少关照，偶尔也想给它吃点肉，却只有最初给过它一片肉，那之后，我自己这边也没有肉的影子。
闲着，于是钓鱼，不觉间睡魔袭来，身子猛然』晃。我惊醒过来，睁开眼睛，发现池塘表面像是有两只眼睛在灼灼地发着光。此时，未草“咳咳咳”地叫了起来。如此说来，我没见过未草呜叫的瞬间。我感到讶异，便走到院中，在池边蹲下，仔细打量水面。原来，在迄今为止我以为丛生着未草的位置，浮着一片绿色碟子模样的东西。我把那东西捞起来，滑不溜手，让人感觉不快。那东西有一定的厚度，周围密生着水藻般的玩意儿。上面散落着两三个小孔，方才那双灼灼的眼睛也在其中。我无意就这样将其扔掉，决定去找水渠那头的山寺的和尚，与他商量。五郎似乎对这东西感到在意，也老老实实地跟在我身后。和尚是我最近认识的。从车站回家的路上偶尔同路，有时我去他那儿下围棋。他也多半无所事事。不出所料，和尚此时也闲着，正在前院铺开席子晾晒木耳。
“你很勤快嘛。”
“昨天下雨，在后山疯长出来的。这东西几乎是水长成的，所以大概成不了好干货。”和尚一口气说着，偶然瞥见我带来的东西，“你也要做干货吗？”
“这个到底是什么呀。”
“哪个？”
