小说集《马和放马的人》一九四八年十一月由上海文化生活出版社发行，被巴金收人其主编的“文学丛刊第十集”，计《多伦格尔的黄昏》、《冰河封冻期》、《马和放马的人》、《狼——我们底敌人》和《游动在桑干河两岸》五篇小说。作者用大量的笔墨描述了塞外贫瘠土地上的牧民、车夫、猎手与严寒、风沙、野兽、疾病作抗争的故事。还讲述了雇工们被逼走投无路，上山参加游击队，跟日本侵略者展开殊死战斗的壮举。尤其多伦格尔草原上那粗犷原始的民俗风情和牧民们充满血泪的生存状态，给编者以强烈心理震撼。小说语言朴实，情节生动，读来引人入胜，字里行间传达出作者深刻的人生体验和悲悯情怀。

《李白凤文集：李白凤小说集》：

四十年前，赵奶奶那时才十八岁，她底爸爸为着贪图赵守备的五十块龙洋，就把这样一个年轻得像一朵花似的女儿，卖给赵家做二房；赵守备是镶黄旗世袭的武职，说起来也好笑人，他既开不满弓，也打不起把势，好在天下太平了多年，只要逢年过节对上司的礼物不会忘记的话，这也就算是大大的称职了。
赵守备一世也没有经过什么风霜，就在这略微有些胡匪的地方来镇守，他所能做的事究竟是什么，谁心里都是雪亮的。平时除了整天躺在大坑上抽鸦片之外，他唯一的嗜好就是养鸟儿；什么八哥，腊嘴子，老西儿之类，他是无一不备的养了好几笼。闲来无事，赵守备照例的抽烟，逗鸟，手里一对油核桃不停地在掌心里滚来滚去，这就是守备爷的日常生活缩影，除非有什么红白庆吊之类的大事，他是轻易不出大门一步的。
例若上面有剿匪的文书传下来的话，在守备爷看来倒没有什么出奇，可是府里的营兵却都在磨拳擦掌地准备出动。
因为一剿匪照例是有意料的好处的，老实说：营兵一离开张家口的城门，随处都有钱在那儿专等他们去拾呢！中国有句老话叫做：“匪如梳，兵如篦，官来像刀剃。”那就是说，胡匪过境，不过像用梳子梳了几下，兵一来呢？就等于换了篦子，老爷一出马，那只有刀剃得最清爽，真所谓鸡犬不留。因着这种种缘故，无论那一庄过了匪，也没有人敢去报官，所以守备爷的兵马，平常都是各安其位的各自逍遥的等着发饷。
赵奶奶进门的那一年，正赶上老佛爷信奉义和团，因为他们有神符不怕洋枪洋炮；这样就不免有点上行下效，守备爷当仁不让，他马上拜了师，上了坛，每天鸟也不喂的学符学咒，并且还在自己后花园里搭了座大台，每天晚上都插斗步月的苦练起来。
在张家口的毛子并不多，只有一座挪威国的教堂，按理说，对付这几个洋鬼子，他们是绰绰有余的，只不过在这里信奉洋教的二道毛却不少，据说有好几千，这倒是一桩辣手的事情。好在守备爷早已成竹在胸，平时早就把二毛子的处住调查清楚了，单等北京城里一打东交民巷，他们在张家口就动手杀毛子。
赵奶奶的父亲也是被鬼迷了心，三不知的，他也进了教堂受了洗，本来大字不识的庄稼汉子，信耶教也是没有一定准性的，可也就这样，在八月十五日那天晚上，被弟兄们拉出来一刀给砍了。
及至守备爷第二天回府，才知道这回事，他也打算办那动手的人，可是又碍着师兄弟的面子，也没有法子下手，这样一来，真弄得赵奶奶哭了好几天都没有开交。
那晓得这一杀毛子居然杀出了大祸，不上十天工夫，听说鬼子兵就进了北京城，光绪皇上跟着老佛爷母子三人，两乘青布骡车儿就滑到了下花园；接着圣旨下来了，凡是带领义和团烧教堂的文武官员一例参奏，赵守备一看风声不好，就带了家眷溜出了张家口，打算到沟帮子舅爷家里去躲一下子风头。
守备爷的一家走不上五十里的地方，就遇见了胡匪，赵奶奶在乱军之中被家丁救出了重围躲在林子里，等到第二天清早出来一看，守备爷的头和身子早就分了家，他们因为怕二毛子报仇，也没敢落脚就直奔多伦城来避难，赵奶奶骑着骡子抱着少爷，家丁呢？就跟在骡子后面，三天赶到了多伦城。
到多伦城之后，赵奶奶就听了家丁的主意，把手饰卖掉买了个葡萄园，接着就闹革命，宣统皇帝下了龙廷，他们当然更加不敢回到张家口去了。
