作者生于上世纪50年代，童年在北京一个机关大院度过。作者现已退休，常忆起童年生活，并将其记录下来。“拔根儿”是作者儿时的一种游戏。书中的15个小故事，通过作者孩提时的眼描述那个年代发生在北京机关大院里的人和事、善与恶。作者写作此书还有一个初衷：北京的机关大院不同于胡同四合院，有着特殊的“大院文化”，生活在这里的孩子们带着“大院文化”的烙印长大。作者写作此书意在为“大院文化”留下一些念想。

Author Description

李曼，女，1956年生，北京人。1982年毕业于北京师范大学哲学系。1983年开始发表儿童文学作品，1994年加入中国作家协会。著有《京城兔儿爷》、《胖妞历险记》、《获诺贝尔奖的女性》等作品。

Introduction

拔根儿是笔者儿时喜欢的一种游戏。已经走进夕晖的“50后”们，他们的童年镌刻在上世纪60年代，那是一段纯真宁和与动乱噩梦交织的岁月。
如今，在北京这个富丽炫彩的大都市里，工作节奏和生活压力让50后们更加珍视儿时友谊，聚会成为一大乐事。笔者和几个发小在同一个机关大院里长大，当两鬓飞霜再相聚时，童年生活的点点滴滴便成为最惬意的话题。这让笔者有了一种将这些记忆写作下来的冲动。
此外，本书的写作也为钩沉起消逝的“大院文化”。解放初期，由于政府工作人员陡增，京城郊外建起了多个宿舍大院，它们有别于胡同四合院，有着特殊的文化氛围。上世纪80年代末住房政策改革，人们不再靠单位分房，而是购买商品房和租房住，机关家属大院连同其邻里文化也随之淡出，沉淀为一段历史。
本书通过孩子的眼记叙了那个时代人们的友情、爱情和师生之情：《小黑叔叔》中被压抑而优美的爱情；《美丽的“无缝钢管”》中大院小霸王对女友的一往情深；《独身班主任》中境遇不佳、却一直默默照顾班主任的男同学……一个个小故事直陈那个时代的是非善恶，显示出50后们的人生观和价值观。
无论岁月更迭风云变幻，每个时代的人们都有自己独特的童年生活，每个人都有难以磨灭的童年记忆。当我们把它小心地挖出来，拂去历史尘埃，就成了珍贵的收藏品——无法用金钱衡量，却温暖和快乐着我们的心。
