《太原小说选（现当代卷套装上下册）》：
自古以来，这小城，就是东街穷，西街富。
西街上，曾云集了各种商号：这个隆、那个昌，或是什么裕什么泰的。这些商号，都是大买卖，分号设在全省，甚至全国各地，而西街，则是它们的大本营。所以，西街上的商号，从不在这条街上设门面。
迎来送往的，都是大客商。也正是因为这个缘故，平目里，这条街比起店铺商铺鳞次栉比的南街来，反而要幽静、清冷，就像一条不动声色的幽深的大河。
当然，这是在没有朗霞之前，从朗霞记事之后，那些个商号，这个隆那个昌的，就都慢慢消失了。有的公私合营，有的干脆没了下落。旧时王谢堂前燕，飞入寻常百姓家，所以，朗霞的西街，已是兴衰史落幕之后的那种家常和平淡。尽管如此，走在西街上，那深宅大院、那在一个孩子眼中分外宏大的楼宇，仍旧有一种掩盖不住的神秘，又神秘又衰败。
朗霞的家，北砖道巷，是西街中腰的一条小横巷，窄窄的、长长的，她家在巷底，独门独院，院门坐西朝东。小小一座四合院，进门就是照壁，拐进去，院子齐齐整整，青砖墁地，北屋前，一左一右，种了一棵石榴一棵丁香。春天，丁香开白花，夏天，石榴开红花，也许是因为这两棵树的缘故，通往后院的月洞门上，一里一外，各凿了两个字，一边是“如云”，一边是“似锦”。这树、这字，从朗霞家买下这宅子时，就在那里。没人知道，它们已经存在了多少年，也没人知道，种这树凿这字的人，如今又在哪里。
拐进月洞门，就是后院。后院里，有一棵老榆树，有茅厕，还有一个地窖：那是为储存冬菜用的。这黄土地上的小城，几乎家家都有这样一个储存冬菜的地窖，平地里深深地挖下去，再将一侧朝里掏空，如同战时的防空洞。只不过，有的人家讲究一些，用砖将洞碹起来，就像碹窑洞，而大多数人家，则是一孔裸窖。那地窖里，冬暖凉夏，盖子一盖，是天然的储藏室。
家家后院，差不多都是这样的格局。
朗霞家有一点不同的地方，说来有趣，那就是，她家的茅厕上方，门楣的条石上，竟也凿了几个字，那几个字是，“活泼地”。
幼小时，朗霞不知道那几个字是什么字。后来上了学，念了书，慢慢大起来，每次如厕，进门时一抬头，常常会心地一笑。朗霞想，从前，住在这院子里的人，盖这院子的人，一定是个十分有趣的人。
朗霞自己，则是一个心思细腻的孩子。
这孩子，在西街的这个家里，一直住了十年。本来，她以为自己至少要到十八岁、也就是高中毕业才会离开西街，离开这个叫作“谷城”的小城，却不知道，自己竟会是以那样一种惨烈的方式，和它告别。马兰花嫁给陈宝印那年，陈宝印还是国军的一个连长。用她娘的话说，人长得还算“排场”，只是，比马兰花大了整整十岁。马兰花刚满十八，而陈宝印，则是二十八。马兰花的爹妈，在百里外的小镇，开着一爿小小的杂货铺，当年，陈宝印的部队，就在那里驻防，常常到马家那个杂货铺去买香烟。那个杂货铺，芜杂、阴暗，气味浑浊，却有一朵鲜花又幽静又张扬地生长着。陈宝印托人去马家说媒，马家甚至没有问，陈宝印在自己的家乡有没有结发原配，就一口答应了这门亲事。
穷家小户的闺女，不在乎名分。
陈宝印在家乡，读过几年私塾，通文墨，虽是行伍之人，却也解几分风情。新婚第二天，清早，他学“张畅画眉”，给他的小新娘梳头，他笨手笨脚，捏着桃木梳，生扯疼了她。她仍旧有些羞涩，垂着眼皮，不好意思去看镜中的那个男人。他则是费了九牛二虎的气力，也挽不好那个发纂。终于，他放弃了，说，“这家伙，比打场仗还吃力！”她笑了。
