贞观十六年一个没有月光的秋夜，掖庭宫内一片静谧。一扇扇式样相同的门窗早已绝望地关闭了，倦于等待的宫人们正在梦中领受皇上的"宠幸"。忽然听见一阵"咕咚咚"的脚步声传进永巷……
掖庭宫长九百步，宽二百步，中间一条狭长的巷道贯穿南北，被称为永巷。昏暗的夜色中有几名宦官抬着热气腾腾的大木桶碎步走进永巷深处。所过之处不时地有门窗打开，露出一双双睡意惺忪又好奇的眼睛，尾随着他们的身影。木桶终于停住，"咣当"撞开一扇门，屋里溢出一道融融的灯光。是武才人的寝房。
稚气未脱的武才人被吓了一跳，惊慌地抓住身边的侍女灵儿，灵儿却失声啜泣起来。
"你怎么了？"
灵儿哽咽着："我是为才人姐姐高兴的……"
武才人十四岁进宫封为才人已经快半年了，虽然天天盼着皇上宠幸，但何为宠幸她还懵懵懂懂。看着宦官们一张张阴沉的面孔，她不禁有些害怕。
宦官王福来挽起袖子，撩起袍襟，上前皱脸一笑："皇上赐浴，武才人请吧。"

武才人不耐烦地打断他的话："皇上怎么又想起我来了呢？"
王福来被问得微微一愣："那是命。"
窗外传来更鼓声声，已快三更天了。武才人在几个宦官的侍候下出浴，净身，修剪指甲，施粉，点朱、描眉、梳头、更衣……一样样不厌其烦。她端详着铜镜中的自己，不禁一阵出神："这是我吗？"
灵儿在一旁惊喜地说："才人姐姐打扮起来就像仙女一般，皇上一定喜欢。"

甘露殿是皇帝的寝宫，即使没有月光也能看清它雄伟的轮廓。果然，一乘肩舆从甘露殿里出来，肩舆上那个女子神色冷漠，目不斜视，与武才人擦肩而过。
甘露殿内宫灯高悬，香烟袅袅，四周装饰华美，宽大的御案上摞着未批阅完的奏折，御榻前床帐低垂。
武才人进门叩拜，却没听到回应，抬头望去，原来是皇上的龙袍皇冕立在自己面前。她笑了，环顾四周，空无一人。她胆子大了起来，看着龙袍上逼真的绣龙呼之欲出，忍不住伸手去触摸。在她的想象中，穿戴这身龙袍皇冕的天子一定英俊、文雅，举止言语也非同凡人。
忽然传出一声疲惫、沙哑又不失威严的声音："你叫什么？"
武才人一惊，蓦转头，看见一个男人穿着睡袍走到自己近旁，脸色黑中泛红，浓密的髭须向上翘着，两鬓已有了白发，魁伟的身体站立不稳……诧异之中她忘记了害怕，脱口问道："你是……皇上？"
太宗突然仰面"哈哈"大笑，那笑声叫凝滞的空气都为之震颤……
武才人惶恐地伏身在地："臣妾叩见皇上。"
笑声戛然而止，太宗俯下身来，怪异的目光盯在武才人脸上、身上。他说："来替朕喝了这盏酒。"
武才人摇头："臣妾不会……"
太宗把酒抵在她嘴边："朕要你喝！"
武才人只得屏住气一饮而尽，顿时呛得涕泪齐流……
太宗将武才人拽到自己胸前："你，看着朕！"
武才人睁大充满泪水的眼睛："皇上……"
太宗："你说，朕……老了吗？"
武才人点点头又摇摇头。
太宗又厉声道："你怎么不懂得为朕宽衣？"
没等武才人开口，太宗便一把拎起她抛进宽大的御榻……武才人两眼是泪，什么也看不清了，像一只被逼在绝境的小兽在无力地挣扎，只觉着天旋地转，身体被一层层地剥开、撕裂，禁不住"啊"的一声惨叫，一口咬在太宗赤裸的肩膀上……
泪水渐渐干涸了，武才人的眼前又浮现出太宗的面影，他俯在她脸上，问："告诉朕，你叫什么？"
武才人透不过气，说不出话来。
太宗说："你的面目如此姣美，朕就赐名你叫媚娘吧。"
黎明。天边滚过闷闷的雷声……武媚娘被送回永巷的寝房中，她躺在床上，发髻散乱，脸上的粉黛朱红也都混作一片，模糊不清。好像身体也不是自己的了。
灵儿兴奋又好奇地问："才人姐姐，你看清了吗？皇上他长得什么样儿？"
