十九世纪末的时候，大家都不曾想到，当我们专注于自己的事，竟然会有一个更智慧的生命世界在密切关注着我们，如同人类用显微镜研究那些蠕动繁殖在一滴水里的生物一样仔细。我们这些自高自大的人类，总是自以为掌控了物质世界的全部。那些显微镜下的纤毛虫，估计恐怕也和我们一样有着如此的幻觉。人们从没想过，宇宙中那些更古老的世界将会对我们构成威胁，人们向来认为其他星球上压根儿就不存在什么生命形式，或者认为，火星上即使有物种存在，也绝对远远地落后于我们，正企盼人类传教士的大驾光临。
然而事实并非如此。他们的智慧远远比我们先进，如同我们与野兽相比一样。他们更理性，并且更加冷酷无情。出于对人类文明的嫉妒，他们已经密切观察我们很久了，并且正在紧锣密鼓地筹划如何对付我们。
众所周知，火星从太阳上吸收光和热。火星半径恰好是地球的一半。并且，火星的体积只有地球的百分之十五，也更容易获得适合生命孕育的环境。不过，人类向来很自负，一直都不肯承认这一点。事实上，火星生命起源的时间更早，在地球大冰期结束之前，火星上早巳出现了生命迹象。
现在火星已经进入了一个新的冰期，火星赤道的中午气温仅相当于地球上寒冷的冬季；那里的大气也更加稀薄，南北极冰帽在不断积蓄和消融下，定期淹没温带陆地。可以说，火星人正面临着末日的危险。

八月二日出版的英国《自然》杂志对该事件进行了报道。我认为，这应该就是火星巨型大炮向地球方向发射出的巨大火光。之后的两个火星大冲也出现了该奇怪光线。
在六年前，国际天文局接到了一个惊人消息，爪畦岛的劳威尔称，他在午夜时分观察到火星上喷出了一个大火球，然而神奇的是，一刻钟之后，火焰就消失了。但第二天的报纸竟然没有对此进行详细报道，仅《每日电讯》发表了一则极小的简讯。人类对自己面临的威胁简直一无所知。如果不是著名天文学家奥吉尔维的话，我也根本不会知晓这次气体爆发事件。
