Book Abstract

2004年2月4日，拉里载我去位于康涅狄格州丹伯里的女子监狱，这距离我作案已经十多年了。前一天晚上，我们是在家里度过的。拉里给我做了一顿精致的晚饭，然后我们在床上蜷作一团痛哭。在二月单调乏味的早上，我们驱车朝未知世界驶去，我想让车开得慢一些，再慢一些。我们右转弯驶进联邦专用区，沿一座小山朝停车场驶去，看到一个庞大的建筑物出现在远方，建筑物周围有三层高高的铁丝网包围着，看起来很恐怖。我敢肯定，里面还有更高级别的防护措施。

拉里把车开到停车场。我们都睁大眼睛互相看着对方。一辆白色的轻型小货车紧跟着我们也进入停车场，货车的车顶上有警灯。我把车窗摇下来。

“今天不准探视。”警官告诉我。

我把头伸出去，以反抗似的语气来掩饰我内心的恐惧。“我是主动来服刑的。”

“那好吧。”他开车离开了。他听到我说主动服刑是不是看起来有点惊讶？我记不清楚了。

在车里，我把身上所有的首饰都取了下来——那七个金戒指；拉里给我的圣诞节礼物镶钻耳坠；我奶奶给我的蓝宝石戒指；我手腕上一直戴着的50年代的男式手表；曾让爷爷十分恼怒的耳朵上其它所有的耳钉。我穿着牛仔裤，运动鞋，和一件长袖T恤。我虚张声势地说：“我们进去吧。”

我们走进大厅。一个平和的穿制服女警察在一张高桌子后面坐着。大厅里还有几张椅子，一些储物柜，一个投币式公用电话，和一台自动汽水机。到处都一尘不染。“我是主动来服刑的。”我说到。

“等一下。”她拿起电话，对某人简短地说到。

“去坐一下吧。”我们坐下来。一直坐了好几个小时。一定都等到午饭时间了。拉里递给我一个法式鹅肝酱三明治，那是他用昨晚剩下的菜做的。我一点都不饿，但还是打开锡纸，近乎悲惨地用力咀嚼每一口。几乎可以确定，我是美国七大最有名的女子学校所有毕业生里面，第一个在联邦监狱的大厅里就着健怡可乐吃法式鹅肝酱三明治的毕业生。可是，谁知道呢。

终于，一个相貌相当凶狠的女警官走进了大厅。她有一个很吓人的伤疤，从脸上一直延伸到脖子上。“查普曼？”她咆哮道。

我们立马站起来。“是的，我就是。”

“他是谁？”她问到。

“我的未婚夫。”

“我带你进去之前他必须离开。”拉里看起来有点愤怒。
