Book Abstract

市场最为常见的经济分散化形式就是市场。市场（market）是一种经济制度，它为人们提供买卖商品和服务的机会与规则。市场规则有时依外在规定，有时随惯例习俗。譬如说，我们可以比较一下，美国纽约证券交易所企业股票的买卖必须遵守严格的规章制度，而露天集市只需依循松散的惯例就可以了。
微观经济学分析中，每一个市场都对应着在特定地理区域内销售的一组密切相关的产品。譬如说，我们可以考察波士顿的冰淇淋零售市场。不过，我们通常很难明确界定一组商品或一个地理区域的恰当边界。譬如说，我们是把产品种类划分得细一点，具体到巧克力冰淇淋，还是划分得泛一点，把冰糕和冰冻酸奶也包括进来？类似地，我们是考虑小一点的地理区域，如灯塔山，还是大一点的地理区域，如马萨诸塞州？
对经济学家来说，如果多种商品在很大程度上可以互换，就应划人同一个市场。如果消费者愿意在冰糕和冰淇淋之间互换，经济学家就会把它们划入同一个市场。类似地，如果灯塔山和后湾那些冰淇淋店的常客愿意到附近其他地区购买，经济学家也会把波士顿这些地区划人同一个市场。假如就某种产品而言，任何一个地方的任何一个卖家都能与任何一个地方的任何一个买家做生意，那么全世界都可以划人同一个市场。
与经济学家不同的是，大多数人以为市场就是指特定的交易场所，比方说跳蚤市场、农贸市场，或者纽约证券交易所的交易大厅。在经济学家看来，跳蚤市场并不能构成单一市场。原因有两点。首先，跳蚤市场上的产品种类繁多，小到短袜，大到沙发。经济学家会把短袜市场和沙发市场区分开来。其次，跳蚤市场的消费者通常也会在当地的商店购买相同的商品。对经济学家来说，短袜市场还应包括跳蚤市场消费者购买短袜的其他来源，如当地的服装百货商店甚至在线销售短袜的企业。
