Book Abstract

翻译的历史及翻译理论的沿袭
在我国，翻译活动可谓源远流长。据史书记载，早在四千余年前的夏代，不同部族之间就有了交往。由于言语相殊，人们自然需要借助翻译相互交流。到了周朝，随着这种交往日趋频繁，朝廷设立了专门的接待机构和负责不同语言翻译的译官。从东汉桓帝时期的安世高开始，已经有了翻译经书的活动。早期的翻译只是民间的私人事业，到了晋代，释道安主持设置了译场，翻译事业出现了一大进步，成为有组织的活动。从隋代到唐代，是我国翻译事业高度发达的时期。北宋时期，尽管也兴修了译经院，但规模已远不如盛唐。明万历年间到清代“新学”时期，出现了一批有影响的翻译家。“五四”时期是我国翻译事业的分水岭，“五四”以前是以翻译西方资产阶级学术名著和文学作品为主，“五四”之后开始介绍马列主义经典著作和无产阶级文学作品。
对翻译理论的研究始于汉代佛经的翻译，译经大师在翻译佛经的同时，也在探索翻译理论。我国古代对翻译理论的讨论就是直译和意译。公元3世纪的支谦及后来的释道安为翻译理论的研究奠定了基础。清末以来，我国的翻译理论研究进入了蓬勃发展的时期。“五四”时期是翻译理论的开创时期。我国历史上几次翻译高潮可使我们更明确地了解我国翻译的历史及翻译理论的沿袭。
1.第一次高潮
我国最早的具有较大规模的文字翻译活动是佛经翻译。佛经翻译始于汉末，兴于魏晋，盛于隋唐而衰于宋。自汉武帝通西域后，随着对外贸易通道的建立，佛教开始从天丝（今印度和尼泊尔一带）传人中原。佛经大多是用梵文写成的，译成汉语才能在我国传播。据不完全统计，从汉末至宋代的千余年间，名见经传、直接参与译经者数以百计，共译出经书二万一千五百余种，多达几十万卷。在叙述我国佛经翻译的历史时，我国一些学者把这一阶段归结为直译到意译的过程。本书对佛经翻译不采取直译派和意译派的分法，而是把整个佛经翻译的历史看成一个由启蒙阶段到成熟阶段的不断完善的过程。
