标题也称题目、题名、篇名、文题等，是以最恰当、最简明的词语反映论文中最重要的、最具特定内容的文字逻辑组合，是对论文主要内容与中心思想的高度语言概括，也是论文主题和中心思想最精粹的浓缩。突出研究结果的论著标题应能明确表达自变量、因变量、实验对象、变化特点及特定方法等；突出研究方法的论著标题能清楚表达方法的名称、适用范围和主要特点等。读者（potential reader）在阅读摘要之前往往先浏览标题，因此标题应语言精练、表达清楚、引人注目。
一篇论文的标题是给读者的第一印象，对论文应能起到画龙点睛的提示、评价、吸引和检索的作用，因此，标题在论文写作中具有举足轻重的地位。一个好的医学论文标题应该体现出：1）醒目：论文题目虽然居于首先映人读者眼帘的醒目位置，但仍然存在题目是否醒目的问题，因为题目所用字句及其所表现的内容是否醒目，其产生的效果是相距甚远的，所谓醒目，就是首先要确定文题的中心词，中心词是标题的基础和骨架，其他词围绕着它作进一步的阐明以丰富中心词的内涵，使标题独具特色。如Thresholds for normalblood pressure and serum cholesterol（正常血压和血清胆固醇的临界值）；Hysterectomy forbenign conditions（良性妇科疾病的子宫切除术）中的thresholds和hysterectomy，分别突出了文题的中心。2）简明：医学论文写作（medical manuscripts）注重对事实的描述，因此，医学论文英文的标题因其科学性无需使用诗一样的语言。过于繁琐会使读者却步。尽可能删繁就简，用最少的文字或词汇提供最多的信息。如“肝移植治疗急性肝衰竭（Treatment of acute hepatic failure by liver transplantation’，表面看似乎比较得体，但若将其英文改为：“Liver transplantation for acute hepatic failure：’就要简明多了。又如“主动脉炎的胸部X线表现及临床意义（Roentigenologic study of aortoarteritis：chest X-rayappearance and its clinical significance）”可以简化为：Aortoarteritis：chest X-ray appearanceand its clinical significance”。3）准确：论文题目要确切而有特异性，即突出论文中特别有独创性、有特色的内容。文题应准确地表达论文的特定内容，实事求是地反映研究的范围和深度，防止小题大做，名不符实。除此之外，标题写作还应符合目录编制、文献标引和检索的要求；标题中的数字应用阿拉伯数字，尽量避免使用作者个人独创的、非公知公认的缩略语、化学分子式、结构及化学方程式。
