信用证是国际贸易中一种常用的支付方式。据统计，有超过一半以上的贸易额是通过信用证方式实现结算的。使用信用证首先得了解信用证的性质。根据《UCP600》第5条的有关规定，在以跟单信用证为收汇方式的情况下，银行处理的是单据，而不是单据所涉及的货物、服务或其它行为(Banks deal with documents and not with goods，serv-ices or performance to which the documents may relate)。因此，银行履行付款责任的依据，只是单据而不是有关的货物等。受益人只要能提交符合信用证规定的单据，银行就必须承担付款的责任。由此我们可以看出单证在信用证结算中的重要性。可以说，单证质量的好坏直接影响结汇的质量。正确是单证制作的前提，也是安全收汇的前提。没有正确的制单就没有安全收汇的保障。据统计，每年均有因为对合同及信用证条款理解不透而制作出不符单证而造成银行退单或拒付的情况发生。信用证英语属于特殊用途英语(ESP)范畴，它是一种外语加专业的模式。专业知识是要传送的信息主体，而语言则是载体。信用证实务从业人员要具有必备的专业知识，但同时也需要一定的语言驾驭能力，要懂得信用证条款表述的语言规则和语言风格等，只有这样才能够正确地读懂信用证英语，实现顺利结汇。

自由议付（Unrestricted Negotiation）亦称公开议付(Open Negotiation）。如果是自由议付信用证，对该信用证的议付地点不作限制，即欢迎任何银行予以议付。凡自由议付信用证，一般来讲在信用证的议付条款中须注明“自由议付”字样。比如：

译文：可在任何银行办理议付。
This credit is available with any bank in China by negotiation against presentation of the documents detailed herein together with their draft (s） in duplicate at sight.
译文：本信用证仅凭提示如下单证及即期汇票一式两份在中国任何银行办理议付。
另外，有的信用证不注明任何字样，而载有“邀请”或“建议”自由议付条款。
这时信用证是通过其自身的承诺条款（Undertaking Clause）（保证条款）来表达其自由议付的功能。比如：
We hereby agree with the drawers, endorsers and bona-fide holders of drafts drawn in compliance with the terms of the credit that such drafts shall be duly honored on presentation.
