长安二月多香尘，六街车马声辚辚。
家家楼上如花人，千枝万枝红艳新。
帘间笑语自相问，何人占得长安春？
长安春色本无主，古来尽属红楼女。
如今无奈杏园人，骏马轻车拥将去。

阴历正月元旦，随着群臣百官的朝贺，长安的春天在历书上登场了。然而，直到元宵观灯，大唐之都的春色还尚浅。立春过后约十五日，进入雨水节气，菜花开了，杏花开了，李花也接着开了，花信之风才变得渐渐温暖起来。惊蛰一到，一候桃花，二候棣棠，三候蔷薇；及至春分，一候海棠，三候木兰，各种花木缭乱竞艳，帝都的春意日益浓酣。花香的气息吹拂在东西两街一百一十坊的上空，渭水之上落日铺霞，终南山麓骄阳笼罩。又经历了几个烟雨蒙蒙的春雨之日，清明节也过了。到了桐花现紫，郊外的田垄上麦苗青青，御沟的水面上柳絮缤纷如雪翻飞的时候，便是谷雨了，春色渐老。日光之影不由得增加了光耀，晴空碧蓝如洗。熏风抚慰着浐、灞二桥桥头的柳丝，舒爽地吹过；牡丹花盛开，王者般占尽了满都的春意，城中的士女倾巢而出，追寻着花的踪迹，曼妙度日。
当楝树花盛开，恼人的香气在夜晚飘荡时，世界变成新叶绿叶的时节，令人感动的新绿，淹没了九街十二衢的里坊，道路两旁遮天蔽日的槐树、榆树的树荫，也日渐浓密2；人们三五参差地在舒爽的人行道上休憩，他们是略感疲惫的都市士人的身姿，是换了崭新轻衫还微露香汗的仕女的身姿，他们是在寻求一时的休憩？初夏就这样隐约可见地来了。长安的春尽了，诗人们唱起春逝之歌、写起惜春之赋。
站在京城东城墙的中门——春明门上眺望，西北方远远可见排列着三省六部飞甍的“皇城”，其北面是“宫城”的殿阁之顶，再往东北，如龙宫般浮现的，是后来天子居住的东内诸宫的屋顶。盛唐之时，玄宗新建的常住宫殿——兴庆宫的一角，黄瓦与丹墀相映，勤政殿与花萼楼的画栋朱帘相望。西南面，沿着朱雀大街，荐福寺的小雁塔在民房之间挺立着高高的尖顶。在其南方，遥遥可见是慈恩寺大雁塔金霞薄紫的身影。这周围，便是上都长安连接东都洛阳、北都太原的孔道进入都城之处，所以，车马往来非常繁忙。到地方上去赴任的官吏由此而出，骑着骆驼的沙漠商队也由此而出。手臂上载着海东槿域（古代对朝鲜的别称）的特产——鹰的贵公子，在城东的郊野狩猎玩乐了一天，骑着银鞍白马也从这里而来。唐代朝廷的仪仗队伍，迎来华丽夺目的骅骝缓步向西、千里迢迢跨海而来的东方岛国日本国的藤原清河使者。外国使臣入朝的队伍也从东面由这里进入都城。从日本、新罗、渤海等遥远国家，为了修学求法，跨越山河万里负笈而来的人，也是从这个门而入。日本国的遣唐使空海、圆仁、圆珍、宗睿，也都是从这里踏入长安之都的。卷发高鼻、紫髯绿眼的胡人，也是往来频繁。在春明门附近遇到西域胡人的故事，在唐代不算珍稀逸事3。热闹之处虽在东市，略输一筹的西市并不相让，那里流寓的外国人绝不在少数4，所谓到“拓跋之都”的“胡姆丹”（长安城的胡名5）城朝见大唐的天子——天可汗6，逐利而来的西域胡商为数众多。往来之盛不仅仅限于陆路，南门外有名叫龙首渠的运河环绕，江浙的大米、南海的珍宝如山般载船而来，桅樯林立，锦帆鼓风，水上舟楫穿梭繁忙，热闹非凡。王贞白的《长安道》说：“晓鼓人已行，暮鼓人未息。梯航万国来，争先贡金帛。”7写的正是这一带的景象。

Introduction

初版序

为即将出版的著作写序是件乐事。有人会畅谈远大抱负，有人会在谦逊的言语中透露决心。不过，本书所收录的都是一些断断续续、信笔写成的文章，想来没有写序的必要了吧。这些都是六七年前乃至十几年前的旧稿，而且曾经刊载在杂志或报纸上，如今再次整理出版，就像是废品再生。只是不能丝毫不做改动，对于原来的仓促之处，还需进行必要的修订和完善。很多地方只是文字上的修改，不过也有数处补充了一些新材料。

本书以卷首篇名《长安之春》作为书名，并从与唐代文化有关的拙文中，选出体裁不太艰深的数篇合集成书。其中有些篇章看起来像中学生的作文，但笔者还是认真地说，那也是考证论文。对于那些估计普通读者读来麻烦的内容，均附上小字注释作为“参照”，以注明论述根据。读者若觉得麻烦，完全可以跳过去不读。虽说通读了《太平广记》五百卷、《全唐诗》四万八千首，可论文中依据问题的需要，只提出很少量的材料，想起来不免自嘲愚蠢；另一方面，或许又不免遭到旁人这样的诟病：处当今之时世，却弄这些无用的闲文字。我的想法是，关于中国的研究，自有其“今日之用”与“明日之用”的区分，明日之用又有十年、二十年后之用。如果不作这些看似无用的研究，学问终难免是沙土上的楼阁。

书中每篇文章的最初发表时间和刊物，请参看《后记》。至于本书与旧稿不一致的地方，请以本书为准。
