Content Description

刘大櫆明确继承了庄子之“气化论”：“天地之气化，万变不穷。”（《刘大櫆集》卷一，《息争》）“道之所居，气与居之。气浸假而有象，象浸假而有数。道也者，不贰者也。数也者，不一者也。奇零也，参差也，自一而长之，以至于无穷也。……夫彼司化者，亦乘于气数之中而不能以自主耳。非其能为不齐而不能使之齐也。……儒者真实之理，庄生奇幻之文。道不二而数不一，是一篇之主。”（《观化》，《海峰文集》卷一）这种“气化论”，使他进一步继承并发展戴氏的主张，曰：“文章者，人之精气所结”（《潘在洞时文序》，《刘大櫆集》卷三，）故进而从“气”的角度提出绝然不同于儒家的文学审美观：“文贵奇，所谓‘珍爱者必非常物’。……奇气最难识，大约忽起忽落，其来无端，其去无迹。读古人文于起灭转接之间，觉有不可测识，便是奇气。”（《论文偶记》之十六）姚鼐将其发挥到极致：“鼐闻天地之道，阴阳刚柔而已。文者，天地之精英而阴阳刚柔之发也。惟圣人之言，统二气之会而弗偏。然而《易》《诗》《书》《论语》所载亦间有可以刚柔分矣。值其时其人告语之体各有宜也。自诸子而降，其为文无弗有偏者，其得于阳与刚之美者，则有文如霆如电，如长风之出谷，如崇山峻崖，如决大川，如奔骐骥。其光也，如杲日如火如金……其得阴与柔之美者，则其文如升初日，如清风，如云如霞，如烟如幽林曲涧，如沦如漾，如珠玉之辉，如鸿鹄之鸣而入寥廓……且夫阴阳刚柔其本二端，造物者糅而气有多寡，进絀则品次亿万，以至于不可穷……。”

Author Description

刘大櫆（1698～1780），清桐城县陈家洲人（今属枞阳县），桐城文派领军人物。早年抱明经致用之志，但屡试不中，遂“退而强学栖迟山陇间”。刘大櫆好工文辞，以才气著称。他的文学活动，主要在乾隆时期，创作了大量诗歌、散文，他的文章既少歌功颂德、妆点“盛世”，也不多指斥时政、揭露现实黑暗，代表着下层正统知识分子的一般思想状况。他论文强调“义事、书卷、经济”，主张在艺术形式上模仿古人的“神气”、“音节”、“字句”，是继方苞之后桐城派的中坚人物。
