Author Description

季羡林（1911.8.6—2009.7.11），中国山东省聊城市临清人，字希逋，又字齐奘。国际著名东方学家、语言学家、文学家、国学家、佛学家、史学家、教育家和社会活动家。历任中国科学院哲学社会科学部委员、聊城大学名誉校长、北京大学副校长、中国社会科学院南亚研究所所长，是北京大学的终身教授。
代表作品：《牛棚杂忆》《天竺心影》《朗润集》《留德十年》《病榻杂记》《中印文化关系史论集》《佛教与中印文化交流》等。

人生
在一个人生漫谈的专栏中，首先谈一谈人生，似乎是理所当然的，未可厚非的。
而且我认为，对于我来说，这个题目也并不难写。我已经到了望九之年，在人生中已经滚了八十多个春秋了。一天天面对人生，时时刻刻面对人生，让我这样一个世故老人来谈人生，还有什么困难呢？岂不是易如反掌吗？
但是，稍微进一步一琢磨，立即出了疑问：什么叫人生呢？我并不清楚。
不但我不清楚，我看芸芸众生中也没有哪个人真清楚的。古今中外的哲学家谈人生者众矣。什么人生意义，什么人生的价值，花样繁多，扑朔迷离，令人眼花缭乱；然而他们说了些什么呢？恐怕连他们自己也是越谈越糊涂。以己之昏昏，焉能使人昭昭！
哲学家的哲学，至矣高矣。但是，恕我大不敬，他们的哲学同吾辈凡人不搭界，让这些哲学，连同它们的家，坐在神圣的殿堂里去独现辉煌吧！像我这样一个凡人，吃饱了饭没事儿的时候，有时也会想到人生问题。我觉得，我们人的生，都绝对是被动的。没有哪一个人能先制订一个诞生计划，然后再下生，一步步让计划实现。只有一个人是例外，他就是佛祖释迦牟尼。他住在天上，忽然想降生人寰，超度众生。先考虑要降生的国家，再考虑要降生的父母。考虑周详之后，才从容下降。但他是佛祖，不是吾辈凡人。
吾辈凡人的诞生，无一例外，都是被动的，一点主动也没有。我们糊里糊涂地降生，糊里糊涂地成长，有时也会糊里糊涂地夭折，当然也会糊里糊涂地寿登耄耋，像我这样。
生的对立面是死。对于死，我们也基本上是被动的。我们只有那么一点主动权，那就是自杀。但是，这点主动权却是不能随便使用的。除非万不得已，否则是决不能使用的。
我在上面讲了那么些被动，那么些糊里糊涂，是不是我个人真正欣赏这一套，赞扬这一套呢？否，否，我决不欣赏和赞扬。我只是说了一点实话而已。
正相反，我倒是觉得，我们在被动中，在糊里糊涂中，还是能够有所作为的。我劝人们不妨在吃饱了燕窝鱼翅之后，或者在吃糠咽菜之后，或者在卡拉OK、高尔夫之后，问一问自己：你为什么活着？活着难道就是为了恣睢的享受吗？难道就是为了忍饥受寒吗？问了这些简单的问题之后，会使你头脑清醒一点，会减少一些糊涂。谓予不信，请尝试之。
