Book Abstract

引言

任何一位讨论荷马的作者，都不曾读完从古至今所有关于其诗作的著述。我们每一个人都会觉得，前辈的著述，有些更有启发、更有帮助，有些则稍差。本书有个特点，或许值得一提：它甚少谈及荷马史诗创作中的“程式化用语”理论（formulaic theory）。最近四十年中，由米尔曼·帕里（Milman Parry）的工作开始，这一理论日益主导了英语世界的讨论。这一领域的大量工作，在其自身的技术层面固然令人印象深刻，但我想，也许会有人和我一样，因它给诗作本身带来的启示之少而感到失望。我想，已经证明，《伊利亚特》和《奥德赛》很可能代表了口头诗歌传统的终结。这个论断有一定的重要性：它提供了一种方法，用以解释荷马史诗的某些特征——重复的诗行、固定而反复出现的特性形容修饰语（epithets）、典型场景。从另一个方面讲，它排除了某些19世纪分析的可能性：那些分析对词语的重复和些微的不雅穷究不休，从而将史诗割裂成碎片；它也应令我们慎重对待基于此类重复所做出的其他论断。也就是说，它的作用在于阻止了主观的研究途径，却并没有、也不能在原则上完全排除这样的可能。

即使荷马史诗代表了口头诗歌传统的终结，这也并不能告诉我们，现有的史诗当时是如何产生的。已经有人宣称，“在极深的层面上，帕里—洛德假说（Parry-Lord hypothesis）定然从根本上改变所有关于荷马史诗的文学批评”；〔1〕甚至说，我们要研究这些史诗，就必须先有一个新的“口头诗学”，否则就是无稽之谈。〔2〕然而，事实证明，创造一个新的“诗学”并非易事，而关于程式表达的一些新近的研究，对审美理解的贡献，亦未能达到我们的期望。已故的亚当·帕里（Adam Parry）为其父的论文合集写下了难能可贵的导言，其中谈到：“对于志趣在文学的学者，或是普通文学学生和文学爱好者，全部论证都可能显得狭隘地技术化，以至于未能触及根本的问题——荷马的诗歌……”〔3〕过度专注于这些问题，已使一些学者无视另一传统下所做的宝贵工作。另一方面，认为口头诗歌从本质上与笔头诗歌大相径庭的观念，现在也越发显得站不住脚。在《口头诗歌》（Oral Poetry）（剑桥，1977）一书中，露丝·芬尼根（Ruth Finnegan）揭示了实际文本的研究如何消弭了二者的截然分别（而对新诗学的吁求恰是以此分别为据的）：“在‘口头’和‘书写’文学之间并没有泾渭分明的界限”（p. 2），“我认为，要对马苟恩（Magoun）、帕里等人所设想的口传文体的本质做出精确的概括，这种希望定然破灭”（p. 130）。我想，我们将不得不继续那些并未在根本上鼎新革故的、审美的方法。我们要保持审慎，避免那些已被作品的口头来源排除掉的论断；同时，我们处理这些史诗的方式，并不迥异于古希腊人自己曾经对待它们的方式。

其实，较之现代南斯拉夫，古代世界提供的启示更为丰富。首先，大量关于荷马的希腊评注中，虽然也有不少无价值的材料，但确实包含了许多敏锐而又有建设性的意见；而我对这些材料的利用，比大多数近年的著者都更为全面。除了它们的本身的价值，这些评注对检验我们自己的观点也有一定的价值：如果我们在古代评注作品中找到了对这些观点的支持，这往往表明，这些观点至少在古代晚期说得通，在此范围内不算年代误植。

其次，近东的古代文学有类似的作品。显然，荷马和赫西俄德都受到东方源头的影响〔4〕：这种影响在“黑暗时代”之前和之后都曾引起注意，而近年的研究倾向认为，“黑暗时代”之孤立于黎凡特（Levant），是一个更短暂的间隔，并非像人们从前认为的那么久。〔5〕在神话的层面，诗人们所熟知的乌拉诺斯、克罗诺斯和宙斯的故事，是由胡里安（Hurrian）和赫梯（Hittite）源头演化而来的；诸神群会于奥林波斯山的观念，在荷马史诗中至关重要，却在后来的希腊宗教中不见踪迹，这观念则类似我们在美索不达米亚和乌加里特（Ugarit）文学作品中找到的情景。《旧约》虽看似寻常，其实却是更有价值的比较文献来源。说起来简直有点荒谬：J. R. 普里查德（J. R. Pritchard）编辑（1969年第三版）的《旧约相关古代近东文本》（Ancient Near Eastern Texts related to the Old Testament），是个大部头，价值很高，使用方便；而这部书的存在，令古希腊学者往往从中引述，以至忽略了《旧约》本身。《旧约》作为受其他近东文化影响的作品集〔6〕，其相关程度不逊于其他作品；何况它所包含的一些篇章，更具文学特质和文学意义。在关于荷马中宗教之真实性和严肃性的问题上，《旧约》似乎尤其值得关注。

日耳曼和爱尔兰文学中也有一定数量的类似作品。和处理东方的材料一样，我们的目的是通过比较和对照，揭示出荷马的独有特质。相关文学和毗邻文明之文学中习见的主题和观念，必须经历特质上的转变，才可适用于荷马史诗的独有风格。通过这种比较，我们确有可能深入理解荷马的风格。

最后，我得以在近些年德文作者的荷马研究作品中，找到很多观点契合又有所助益的内容。有迹象表明，在德国，口头理论终于流行了起来；但我认为，我们往往忽略了大量能令我们受益良多的作品。

在这个领域里，作者和源起的问题是如此经常地主导着讨论，甚至到了凌驾于史诗本身之上的地步，那么，我多次提及“诗人”甚至“荷马”，也许会显得几近挑衅。在一定程度上，这是种简略的提法：我想要讨论荷马史诗，但不想每一次都把有关史诗创作的观点表述一遍。这样的提法，也反映了我希望借此书解释并论证的观点：《伊利亚特》是一个整体，尽管大家有时也承认这点，但我认为其整体性体现在更深的意义上，在于它清晰而独特地展示了关于世界、关于英勇、关于生死的观念。如果我们同意这点，那么这种观念本质上应该属于同一个人，很难想象除此之外别的情况；而且，我们或许会感到，这部最伟大的希腊史诗，与那个被古代世界奉为最伟大的史诗诗人的名字，二者无法割裂。同样，《奥德赛》也有其自身特有的风格，我已努力将其与《伊利亚特》对比阐释；尽管《奥德赛》的后半部会带来些困扰，把这部史诗也看作是一个统一而伟大的创造力的产物，应该是合乎情理的。
