这本小书，大体讲的都是一些“反常识的历史观”。“反”是对应的意思，不是造反有理的反。食古不化和食洋不化，都会造成程序紊乱，因为后者更强势霸道，矫枉过度易给人遗老遗少之感。其实新旧常识本不是非此即彼的对立，也无法简单置换或评判出优劣，治史者重经验的记录和诠释，供知我者鉴之，如此足矣。

Author Description

杨念群，历史学者，1964年生于北京，现为中国人民大学清史研究所教授，致力于中国思想文化史和中国近代社会史研究。主要著作有《儒学地域化的近代形态——三大知识群体互动之比较研究》《中层理论——东西方思想会通下的中国史研究》《再造“病人”——中西医冲突下的空间政治（1832－1985）》《何处是“江南”：清朝正统观的确立与士林精神世界的变异》等。

皇帝的影子有多长？

一直有一个说法，日本人二战后打死都不承认对邻国搞了殖民侵略，还腆着脸说自己是从西方魔爪下拯救东亚的英雄，所以阁僚们故意年年到神社拜鬼作秀，屡屡勾引刺激中韩两国外交部定期派人出来义正词严大骂一番，缘何如此？原来以为，这都是当年美国人给惯出来的，老美因为执意不给天皇戴上战犯的帽子，最终放虎归山，这才惹得日本高层毫无悔改之心，肆无忌惮地如此胡闹下去，普通日本人自然也心安理得，听之任之。前几天看了一部美国拍摄的新片《天皇》，讲的正好是在东京审判前如何给天皇定罪的故事。片子声称据史实改编，主角菲勒斯将军和麦克阿瑟上将用的都是真名实姓，自然会吸引观影者的好奇，看看美国人到底怎样解读这段世人皆知的囧事。

菲勒斯将军的任务看似简单，就是搜找天皇发动战争的罪证，把他押上战犯的审判台。他开始自信满满，办公室里贴满了与天皇联系密切的臣子照片，宛若一张四面伸出的蛛网。他打算按图索骥一一寻访，却一次次铩羽而归，最后逼得自己独闯战后仍属禁区的皇宫，与首相当面对质。菲勒斯想方设法要挖出天皇发动战争的证言，结果仍是徒劳无功，这让他倍感焦虑。审判的时间一天天临近，在毫无定罪线索的情况下，菲勒斯将军却意外找到了可以赦免天皇战争罪责的证据，那就是原子弹在广岛爆炸后，天皇顶住各方压力，坚持发布投降诏书，提前结束了战争，甚至为此付出了皇宫被激进士兵洗劫，他本人险遭不测的代价。

当时，宣布投降的谈话已经录制完毕，藏于宫中，激进士兵为阻止录音播出，拼死突袭，杀进宫内，天皇仓皇躲进地下室才幸免于难。当然，仅据此作为赦免天皇战争罪责的理由显然还不充分。菲勒斯在走访过程中才真正了解到，“天皇”绝对不仅仅是个简单的位子，而是凝聚日本文化的精神象征，与日本上千年历史的演变密不可分。日本人对天皇的“忠诚”几近疯狂，如果给天皇定罪，捣毁神庙，就如杀父弑母，虽然表面摧毁了祭拜的偶像，却必然引起民心大乱，甚至遭到全国性的抵抗，如此下去，满目疮痍的日本不但不会杜绝战争根源，相反会重新陷入灾难，要想重建将无可能。这种基于文化考量而不是单纯囿于政治思维的做法，最终说服了占领军最高统帅麦克阿瑟将军，天皇得以在东京审判中免受追责。

天皇被赦到底对日本战后重建作用几何，是否应为日后的军国主义复活买单顶罪，肯定不会有统一的答案。东亚政体变革，皇帝的作用到底有多大，到底要不要保留一直是道难解的谜题。中国当年搞新政，革命党和立宪党吵得没完没了，也是因为在皇帝去留问题上观点相左。其实在晚清，这个问题是可以开放讨论的，不是非此即彼的单项选择。立宪党人如梁启超和杨度，想法有点和菲勒斯将军相似，他们都认为，皇帝的位子可以虚置，甚至皇帝的肉身是谁也无关紧要，它只是个符号而已，但这个符号非常重要，不可或缺，如果没有这个符号，大清就会分崩离析。这话不幸被言中，辛亥革命后的多年战乱实际上就与中国缺乏一个政治文化的核心象征有关。
