Content Description

《海外中国研究丛书·他山的石头记：宇文所安自选集》是美国著名汉学家宇文所安有关中国古典文学的论文集，由哈佛才女田晓菲选编而成。《海外中国研究丛书·他山的石头记：宇文所安自选集》所选的17篇文章，论述范围从上古文本如《诗经》、《左传》一直到五四时期有关文学史的重写，以及传统文化与全球主义之关系等问题。这些文章不是某个“理论”或“学派”的产物，而是思想之精要、学术之心得；它们源于激情，也是苦心经营的结果。各篇的研究方法，不为一门一派所囿，而是体现了兼容并蓄、融会贯通的精神，体现了一种丰富的历史想象力。
Author Description

宇文所安，一名斯蒂芬·欧文。1946年生于美国密苏里州圣路易斯市，长于美国南方小城。1959年移居巴尔的摩。在巴尔的摩公立图书馆里沉湎于诗歌阅读，并初次接触中国诗：虽然只是英文翻译，但他迅速决定与其发生恋爱，至今犹然。1972年获耶鲁大学东亚系博士学位，随即执教耶鲁大学。二十年后应聘哈佛，任教东亚系、比较文学系，现为詹姆斯·布莱恩特·柯南德特级教授。有著作数种（其中《初唐诗》、《盛唐诗》、《追忆》等已被译为中文），论文多篇。其人也，性乐烟酒，心好诗歌。简脱不持仪形，喜俳谐。自言其父尝忧其业中国诗无以谋生，而后竟得自立，实属侥幸耳。

“一见”：读《汉书·李夫人传》
在《汉书·李夫人传》里，被延宕的视觉效果和各种各样的表演交织在一起。言辞应许了、也预示了见面；恍惚迷离的见面最终又化为言辞。在这一文本当中，新与旧的传统也交织在一起：我们看到《楚辞》遗留下来的影子，它的神女飘逸迷人，无法亲近，难以捉摸；我们也看到倡——职业歌手——的世界，她以贩卖欲望的意象为生；我们还有“大人”的叙事，当强烈的情感淹没了他、使他不能自已的时候，他把情感转化为吟咏；在众多场景的幕后，是谨守儒家道德的史官，他罗织种种资料，期望做到著述《春秋》的孔子所实行的“大义微言”。作为一则人物传记，这是一篇十分独特的作品，因为它的大部分篇幅都被期待、尾声、重重叠叠的后果所占据。李夫人的真正生平其实只有寥寥几行而已：现身，得宠，生子，死亡。
人们常常把史家班固（32—92）和他的先驱司马迁进行比较。在近代，这种比较往往对班固不利。司马迁是那种被自己所讲的故事深深感动以致失声痛哭的说书人，但是，深受孔子作《春秋》用含蓄的笔法表示道德判断这一信念的影响，班固献给读者的，却是自我意识很强的历史散文。班固因此十分小心地控制笔下的文字，以求控制读者的理解和反应——而这正是他指责于李夫人的地方。班固假装让我们看破幻象，这是一种相当别致的劝谏方式，借助暴露虚伪来创造逼真的写实。也许这就是为什么这篇传记大有问题的原因：在层层幻象之下，几乎什么都没有，但是，这些幻象本身却足以在皇权的行使之中产生具体确实的后果。
