Content Description

《向隅编》三卷，第一卷杂说，包括十七篇古今杂谈，而对竹林七贤、鲁迅与废名的研究别有心得。第二卷十篇，鲁迅和周作人研究所占分量仍重，《读〈莫须有先生传〉》一篇寻绎废名与周氏兄弟交往的轨迹，以及写作这部长篇小说的时代语境，算是对废名这位京派作家的深入解读。第三卷十六篇，侧重在个人读书、购书经历，兼谈购求称心如意画册之难，以及北京实无风花雪月之可言。

止庵，随笔与传记作家。一九五九年生于北京。有《惜别》、《周作人传》、《神奇的现实》、《樗下读庄》、《老子演义》等二十余部著作，并编订《周作人译文全集》、《周作人自编集》、《张爱玲全集》、《鲁迅著译编年全集》（与王世家合编）等。

序
多年前读刘向《说苑》，《贵德》篇云：“今有满堂饮酒者，有一人独索然向隅而泣，则一堂之人皆不乐矣。”一时颇生感慨。以后回想起来，不知道当初何以如此。先来声明一句，这个向隅而泣的人并不是我。我没有这么委屈，也不打算过分扫大家的兴；偶尔逢场作戏，跟着别人喝上两杯亦无所谓，虽然未必清楚究竟凑在一起乐和什么；实在不情愿呢，自个儿悄悄走开就是了。
小时候我一度动辄就哭，总觉得心中不平；那是“文革”初起，家境困难，家里人抱怨说都让我给哭穷了。也许所以留意向隅而泣，能够在童年记忆中找到这么一点依据。然而久矣夫我已不再多愁善感了。除了偶尔——多半是谈及历史上一些人和事时——有所感动外，说是超脱也罢，说是冷漠也罢，反正现在我就是这个样子。所写文章，多少也有所体现。辩解的话，可以说感性之外别有知性，亦不失为与世界打交道的途径之一；不过我与抒情一派乃为隔教，却是显而易见的了。
究其缘由，年齿渐长，阅历略增，或为其一；另外可能也与大学念的医科，又当过医生有关。医生往往被称颂为救死扶伤，然则此系职业所在；其实对于人间种种病痛，他倒是见怪不怪，不会感情用事。身兼医生、作家二职者如契诃夫、塞利纳，作品尤为冷静清醒，即是医生习性使然。当然还可以提到鲁迅，可他在仙台医专才一年半，基础课尚未学完，大概不曾接触病人；其冷峻深刻之处，或许另有主要原因。我讲这个，并非要引大师以自重，而是惋惜自己的情感生涯过早结束，有所失而无所得也。
中国的章回小说，《老残游记》尤为我所钟爱，曾经一读再读。开头那篇自叙，我却不很喜欢。其中特别标举哭泣，推为人类灵性的表现。有云：“哭泣计有两类，一为有力类，一为无力类。痴儿女，失果则啼，遗簪亦泣，此为无力类之哭泣；城崩杞妇之哭，竹染湘妃之泪，此有力类之哭泣也。有力类之哭泣又分两种，以哭泣为哭泣者，其力尚弱；不以哭泣为哭泣者，其力甚劲，其行乃弥远也。”这话倒可自成一说，如果把哭泣理解为情感投入的话；然而无论如何，我还是替子政笔下向隅而泣之人，以及自己打抱不平。按照这种分法，该人之哭泣，不是“无力”，就是“其力尚弱”；至于我等，则将摈于人类灵性之外矣。世人别种情况，作者却未道及，譬如滥抒情，青春气，浮躁夸饰，渲染造作，等等。也许铁云眼界自高，觉得不值一提。本诸宁缺勿滥之义，自忖较之若辈犹胜一筹也。
在《说苑》的记载中，如果可以分开一说，我对“向隅”比对“泣”更其关注。我哥哥建文十五岁下乡，以后寄来一帧共同插队的学生合影，大家都面对镜头，惟独他站在末排一侧，目光朝向旁边。这照片给我留下很深印象，其意趣正与“向隅”相仿佛。哥哥至为聪慧，又较孤僻，二十三年前离家出走，杳无音信。我曾写过《我的哥哥》一篇，略述其事。时至今日，我仍不明白他何以下此决心。但是那照片上他的神情，似乎提前透露一点信息，只是我们一向未能理解。他出走是在天亮之前，当时母亲和我都还睡着；假如有人醒了，极力加以挽留，他是否断绝此念，我也不敢肯定。哥哥是对人世加以拒绝的人，就像刘向所写的那位一样；至于为何非要拒绝不可，我想这是尚且恋恋不舍的我们所难以真正理解的。
前已言明，我并不曾向隅而泣，但是总归不能忘怀那人，以及类似的人，觉得深可体谅同情。此番编订新作，偶然想起这事，略述感想，权当一篇序言，并以“向隅编”命名吾集。盖本书以闲适题目居多，目之为“向隅”亦无不可，虽然并不怎么严重耳。复阅刘著，“一堂之人皆不乐矣”，这情景不无尴尬，却也令人感动，至少比满座照样乐个不休，多些人情味儿罢。虽然向隅而泣者或许无须他人慰藉，他人亦不必勉强使其破涕为笑也。
